Outlook 2010 calendar "Setup could not be started" -- Error: 0x8004010F

So after 14 years of refusing to update Outlook I finally do so, and WHY? Because of iCloud.

Okay, done. Now Office 2010 is working liking a charm -- and I decide it's time to setup iCloud. I do exactly as instructed, and...NO!

At the very END of the setup, I suddenl;y get a message that "Setup could not be started could not be started because of an unexpected error." Being a good citizen, I email the report to Apple, and the email contains further information:

"Error: 0x8004010F: ZebraBootstrap::ActivateDataFile: Could not create msgservice"

NOW WHAT? I read some discussions here and:

1. Tried logging out, logging back in and starting over. Three times. No dice.

2. Tried changing my new me.com account to DEFAULT in Outlook 2010. No love.

I'm up against it now. Does anyone have a clue what I could do to get everything to make friends?

HARDWARE: Core i7 Sandybridge with 16 gigs of RAM.

SOFTWARE: Windows 7 Professional and OUTLOOK 2010

Thanks so much!

I have the same problem as well, but only on one of three pc's. Not sure why. I've removed and re-downloaded icloud several times. I'm thinking I may have to remove all Apple programs from this laptop and reinstall after runnning CCleaner. (This was recommended by an IT person.) My concern is that if I remove itunes from this laptop will I lose everything I purchased using it through itunes?

My other two PC's are working great like nothing ever happened, and my mac has no issue at all. Just this laptop. Help?

I have had the same error, but i upgraded outlook to 2010 after installing icloud on my pc.

So i uninstalled icloud,

reinstalled i cloud,

enabled the email, and loaded outloook to check,

shut down outlook

went back to icloud control panel and then enabled calenders and it worked with no errors, calender now avaialble.

Saves removing all the other apple stuff,

So I followed cnbigfoot's path. Basically did nada -- just reinstalled icloud control panel for Windows to see if it would work today -- and tada! Today everything is working as it's supposed to. Something similar happened on my Macs, which had previously refused to sync their calendars with iCloud.

My Theory: Apple had many more iPhone activations than expected and devoted all their available servers to iDevices -- in any case, mt iPad and iPhone synched obediantly from the gitgo. Then, today, they finally were able to turn on the servers for Mac and PC Calendar support. Calendar files tend to be huge for folks -- like me -- who have been using them for decades. In any case, everything's working and I thank you, @cnbigfoot, for discovering it first.

I don't know who's responsible for awarding "Correct Answer" points, but for the record, cnbigfoot gave the answer that worked for me. Not bad for his first day here!

Glad it worked for you Arthur, not sure about the servers not available, but like you i only uupdated to outlook 2010 because icloud would not work, and i think there is a conflict somewhere if icloud is installed before outlook. Also i upgraded my oultook it was not a new install, so that may have made a dfifference.

Anyway if it wokred for you as well then it appears to be the solution, which is good for anyone else who is having difficulty.

I am a little concerned that the helpfiles from apple on this subject are so vague and contacting customer support is so difficult, i do hope that apple are not going the way of other major companies with an apathetic approach to customer support. Good customer support keeps customers!

*Jaeden in RR and @cnbigfoot, this is one that I really can't blame Apple for -- like iTunes, Outlook is an enormous beast of a program that's grown like Topsy over the years, and I think it's near-miraculous that Apple was able to figure out a way for iCloud to work with it at all. Over the years, I've tried several Outlook-synch products -- valiant efforts, but they all wound up corrupting my pst file.

The problem for users is that nobody wants to take ownership when MS applications won't play nice with Apple, and understandably so -- Microsoft gurus stick to their bailiwick and Apple experts to theirs, and folks like cnbigfoot and me fall through the cracks. Plus, like Jaeden implies, hardly anyone is stubborn enough to insist on stitching it all together, and the only way software gets bugfree is when enough users agree to suffer through betas.

So I would guess we'll always be left to rely on one another, and in this case it worked out. THANKS to everyone!

As a side note, I am FINALLY able to give up Google Calendar sync. The irony was that I never used Google Calendar at all, EXCEPT as a way to sync Outlook and the Apple-verse. Now, if Apple would only do for MS Word what it's just done for Outlook and Pages... let me dream.

On the contrary, it just doesn't come up that often because most users will do the un/reinstall path. The major problem with working with Outlook is that it is closed software. If you can't do it via plugins, it ain't happening. This is why 64 bit OL has such a problem, because of the plugin issue it has.

The only time I've had people "fall through the cracks" is when they don't contact support. I had one call when I wasthere that the guy had problems since transition from .Mac but never called. 20 min later it was working perfectly after fixing a few errors in his data.

Jaeden in RR, sorry -- didn't mean to imply you weren't great at your job or that Apple support isn't helpful. It is, on the rare occasions when I do call.

But can you get phone support for an iCloud issue on Outlook? I thought support calls were limited to Apple products, and only for 90 days following purchase, unless you have Applecare. If I'm wrong, please educate me.

iCloud just happens to be an Apple product 😉. I am not sure if Phone support, or just chat support, is available for iCloud. In the instance I sough support, I had the chat option, but that could just be because of the Photo Stream issue I had.

As far as charging, so far it seems to be free support like MM was. Not sure if that will change or not.

Well, THAT is great news, if true. Think I'll address it in a new thread, because it's important.

I am finding that iCloud and iOS5 in general are major upgrades, bringing everyone the equivalent of a new device with all the attendant excitement and puzzlement as you try to get the most from every new feature. Photostream, for example, is awesome -- but it forced me to start using iPhoto on my Macs, doubtless by design. Now I can't believe I never used it before, but I'm waaay off topic, so I'm off to start that new thread.

Just want to add that it hasn't worked for me. Not sure what the problem is, but I've removed all Apple software and cleaned my registry. Then downloaded and reinstalled all the Apple software I had on the PC....still no joy. However, I did not check it yesterday, but I do know on Saturday it was not working. Fortunately it is working on my other PC's, Ipad and Mac. I will check later today and hope to have good news.
