iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers. When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

Just had a longer phone call and this is what happend:

- Started out using Apple earplugs, conversation went fine for 3 minutes,

then the person in the other end complained he could barly hear me and he was hearing himself

very loud in echo.

- Person called me back and I was still using Apple earplugs.

Same happend, 5 minutes into the conversation.

- Person called me back again, this time I removed the Apple earplugs,

conversation was fine without problems for 20 minutes until we finished speaking.

I do hear this static noise when having phone on max sound settings, but this goes away when i turn it down some, so thats not really a problem.

The problem is the echo that people in the other end is hearing, when I use the Apple earplugs.

It's impossible to talk when this starts.

So from my experience, it seems to be a echo problem only when using the earplugs.

Additional info:

- phone was laying on the table during the whole conversation

- phone is iPhone 4S White 16 GB

- provider is Telenor, Norway

Also sending this same post as feedback to apple.

I posted early about hearing the "echos". I too have an iPhone 4 and not the 4S. My problems only started happening after I upgraded to iOS 5. I can actually hear echo's with or without using a headset. I'm really beginning to think it's a bug in the OS and not the hardware which is reassuring actually, since then there might be a software fix they can release! 🙂

I can't believe there's not more in the media about this! Jobs soon gave a staement after the iPhone 4 signal disaster, but nothing about this problem or the battery issue(not that I've been affected by that). From reading many posts it appears the problem is iOS5 borne rather than a hardware issue. I eagerly await a statement from Apple. I have just taken out a new 18month contract and with a disaaaasterous period with an Nokia N95 8gb, I am naturally apprehensive.

Looks like this issue is finally getting some media attention. Hoping Apple will get their act together and admit there is an issue AND they are working on a solution!!!!

To 'timothyfromcastle' you may want to check if the person your talking to is also using an iPhone with the headset. I also hear my own voice from time to time, however on every occasion I've been speaking to someone with an iPhone 4S.

I've opted not to get a replacement as its looking more and more likely to be a software issue rather then hardware. Plus I can't be bothered to go through the pain of having to reapply a screen protector 😀 !!
