iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers. When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I'd like to add another note...when using headphones...the iphone mic seems to still be on...can any of you also confirm this?

I just put my apple headphones in and then speak into the handset microphone very closely and i can then hear myself in my headphones very easily.

But I also get same effect when using the handset by itself, by cupping hand over end of phone (mic) and speaking loudly. i don't remember it being this way with older handsets...or older iOS. very distracting.

This exact same thing happens to me.

When I'm using my Sennheiser headphones, I can alleviate it a little bit by covering the BOTTOM mic next to the dock port snugly with my thumb and speaking into the second mic (next to the headphone jack) that will get rid of all the background noise but its not exactly an ideal fix.

This is really frusturating because otherwise for the most part I can't live without this phone, I just want it to be easier to live with it!

Hi. I live in Australia.

Using vodafone with 64G iPhone 4s. Same as you.

By this problem, I was so annoyed using headset.

I brought it to apple store, explained to the genious who doesn't seems genious.

Anyway, he firstly tried using new headset. still same problem. (of course. because, it is not headset prob.)

then he brought out new phone come with black box.. put my sim card, tested. Still the same.

I regret that I haven't tested with the displyed model... sigh.

It is definately software problem I think.

Because, it doesn't happened when I use facetime or skype.

APPLE SHOULD AGREE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND SOLVE THIS...

PROVE THAT APPLE IS STILL A BEST COMPANY EVEN IF WITHOUT STEVE JOBS.

Am going to keep this short and sweet.

.

Both myself and my housemate have just bought a new iphone 4GS.

I am running the latest iOS 5 version (9A405), whilst my housemate is running the initial iOS version (9A334).

I have an issue where the person whom I am calling can hear an echo of their own voice when I am using the handset. My housemate does not have this problem.

Therefore, it seems as though the recent updated iOS version is causing the problem.

Any other people out there who can back up this idea?

I have a brand new iPhone 4S, and a set of brand new expensive earbuds. They are the same type exactly that I used on my iPhone 3Gs with NO PROBLEM. I absolutely loved these with my 3GS, but with my 4S they are Horrible for phone calls.

As soon as I start to call, I can suddenly hear the surrounding noise. It's being picked up by the headset mic, and send into the heaphones. I have tried three other types of earbuds and even some headphones.

SAME PROBLEM.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH 4S FOR MAKING PHONE CALLS???? The sound quality is horrible. There MUST be a software fix for this?????

Jebfromlouisville: You only have to look back a page or two to see that at least three users, including myself, have NOT experienced the echo since updating to 5.0.1. although the slight but constant white noise remains (at least in my case).

Unfortunately this thread has become a dumping ground for all kinds of call quality issues which is clouding any efforts to spot a trend. There is an even longer thread under iPhone:Hardware about hissing, static and other background noise. Maybe all the call quality issues are related, maybe not ... hard to tell with so many conflicting reports.

By reading a lot of same happened to many of you,

I submitted the official complain with safety issue.

I'm sure, it is directly related to the safety matter while the headset is used when driving.

Because, your voice echoing back will block and reduce the other's voice.

Here the feedback link.

To submit the complain officially as many as possible, apple will care more serious and will solve it faster.

Yeah, I have the same problem too. I did NOT have this problem with the original 5.0 software and I had better battery life too.

Now, when I use the headset I get the echo about 6-10 minutes after starting a call. Not moving around, same cell tower and then boom. VERY strange and difficult to have to call everyone back. No good for sales!

Hey everyone-

I've only had one day to test so far, but after updating to 5.0.1 software my echo/distortion problem appears to have been remedied. Making several calls on a noisy and very windy day did not seem to instigate the original problem I had with 5.0.. I will continue to test and report back to be sure, but so far I am definitely seeing an improvement.

Nov 16, 2011 3:59 PM in response to Themacguyver

I wonder why the update seems to be helping some folks with this issue, but not others??? Looks like I'm only 1 of 3 or 4 people up here that has reported improvement after installing 5.0.1, but I'm not sure if folks that have benefitted are not bothering to report back after their issue may have been solved... I'm on my second day of testing after the update using the headphones exclusively for all calls, and still haven't had the echo/distortion problem crop up again. Honestly I'm very surprised, as I had low expectations after reading so many posts in which the update didn't make one bit of difference.

I'm not a tech or engineer so maybe this is a pointless question, but would it matter whether or not the update was done over the air as opposed to through iTunes? Could there be a difference in how the update is applied? Mine was done over the air and I noticed the improvements immediately afterwards.
