iTunes cannot sync... apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined.

I am trying to activate an original iPhone. I keep running into issues (partially because the rest of the world is activating 4Gs phones). I would appreciate any help that is available.

I am working on a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8. My iTunes has been updated- 10.5.

I am currently getting a message- iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined. The iphone screen shows the usb cord/plug pointing to the itunes logo whether attached to a computer or not. And says slide for emergency use.

  • -I have restored to factory settings several times both from a previous backup and set up as new phone.
  • -I have even attempted to use another Mac and a family member's windows machine with similar results on all.
  • -I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
  • -I have put the phone into the recovery mode and restored from there
  • -I have restarted both the computer and phone numerous times
  • -I have replace the SIM card with a new card from the provider
  • -I have received an email saying the phone was activated (and have called to verify with the service provider)

I'm sure there are other things I have tried as well that I am forgetting, as I have been at this now for about 3days. There have been times when I got nothing but a breif "accessing iTunes store" and then a white screen with the grey word iPhone in the middle. At least now I have the normal summary screen when clicking on the device. Unfortunately I am still getting an error "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined." I am not attempting to sync apps, just sync the phone to get a current/clean backup. I will want to sync the apps, just haven't been able to get that far.

By the way, prior to starting this process the iphone worked perfectly- no issues. This just seems to have become an issue when I attempted to restore to factory settings for a clean start with the new line.

This is the furthest I have been able to get in the process. I really need to get this up and running soon as I will need the phone for the work week.

Please help!

I basically tried that but it didn't work for me until I followed the steps outlined in my post. I restarted my iPhone which would have accomplished closing the apps and still had the same problem. I guess different things work for different people. You just have to get the right combination that works for you. Glad you figured out your combination.

my device is iphone 4(ios 6.1.3). for the last 3/4 weeks, i have been facing problems while syncing apps with my device. after connecting iphone to my pc, when i press 'install' option of the apps and apply it, they don't get installed on my iphone. but they show 'remove' option opposite to the name of the app. that's the confusing matter. because 'remove' option is only shown when any app is installed. i didn't get any result after unplugging phone, quitting itunes, then again plugging phone. i did a hard reset on my phone. but again no result. plz give me a suggestion what to do. it occurred even i was in ios 6.1.2. i use itunes 11 on windows 8.

N.B: music and other data sync with my phone, but apps don't sync.

I don't think you've given enough information for anyone to make a suggestion to you. Are you getting the 'apps cannot be determined' error? If so, I would suggest rereading my post on what I did to correct that (moving the items in the current folder so that is't empty whilst keeping a back up just in case and then trying to sync again). If you aren't getting that error, post what error you are getting and myself or others will try and help you.

no, i m not getting the 'apps cannot be determined' error. to say in simple words, apps doesn't get installed to my iphone through itunes. but it shows that apps have been installed which is definitely a confusion. i have tried to sync several times, but no avail. it shows that sync has been successfully completed which is actually not. music and other sync, but apps don't. i tried to restart itunes, replugging iphone, hard reset etc. which weren't fruitful. so plz suggest me something that i can do.

I'm not an expert on this but I have been able to figure things out by research and trying different things. I still feel you haven't given enough information to assist you. I asked if you were getting any errors and you haven't fully answered that. Based on what you've stated, I would try removing the apps and reinstalling them from the phone itself. I typically don't install apps from iTunes on my computer, I install them from the app store and then they get transferred when I sync to my computer. If you've purchased them previously you won't have any problem getting them from the app store. I would probably start with restoring the phone to a previous back up first. If that didn't work, I would remove all apps from the phone AND iTunes (I would definitely back things up before deleting). I would then use my phone to go to the app store, and go to Purchased->Not on this iPhone and download the ones I wanted. After that, I would sync to my computer and transfer the newly (re) purchased apps.

i still don't understand what other info can i supply. anyways, itunes doesn't show any error. that's the confusion. apps aren't actually installed on phone, so i have to install them from my phone. but i generally like to install apps from itunes first, then sync to my phone. because it consumps battery, i don't like to recharge phone frequently.

i know that after installing apps from phone, i can transfer purchases to pc. but what u have told isn't the solution. it's alternate way of downloading apps. i wanted to know what maybe the reason that apps aren't installed on phone through itunes and how to solve that.

Hi everyone,

I have re-written my instructions for uses of Mac who are having this issue. First, click on the Finder. The Finder is the blue icon on the far left side of your dock that has the smiley face on it. Then, press Command (⌘) shift and g on your keyboard all at once. Then, copy and paste this into the dialogue box that appears /Applications/Utilities/ . This will take you to the utilities folder. Now, double click the Terminal application. Once the terminal has launched, make sure iTunes is open on your computer and your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch is NOT plugged into your computer. Then, return to the terminal and copy and paste this line into it and press enter:

killall iTunes; killall iTunes Helper; rm -rf ~/Library/iTunes/;

You may get an error message that says: No matching processes belonging to you were found. This is OK and doesn't matter. The above command simply closes iTunes and deletes the folder that is causing you problems. Next, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and click download iTunes now. Wait for the download to complete and open the installer and reinstall iTunes. After the install is complete, restart your computer. Once the computer has restarted, open iTunes, then wait about 15 seconds. Now plug in your device. The sync should proceed normally. I am working on a solution for Windows computers and will post it once it has been completed.
