Siri location reminders problem

So I want to be able to talk to Siri as say: 'remind me when I leave the gym go do this this and this.'

I figured out that to add locations, you need to add it into your contact. I've done that with custom labels, naming them gym, school etc. When I ask where is my gym, it does not know and brings up my contact info with my gym address there. I ask to set reminders for when I get to gym, doesn't know where my gym is, and shows my contact card. Any ideas?

The only labels that work are 'home' and 'work' the rest don't work.

So after experiencing the same problems as noted on this form, I tried something. Seeing that I had those tasks and reminders for the iCloud and Lokeli in my phone, I decided to disable my exchange reminders. Once I did so I was able to set locational reminders, and it seems to work okay now.

Again under my exchange/email set up, I disabled reminders and now works.

I too had the same problems as everyone else on here but I've sussed it out how to do it. Go on google maps on your phone and find your home or work etc on the map. Now on your home press your finger on the screen and it drops a pin with a blue arrow.

Click on the blue arrow

click on add to contacts

click on add to existing contact

find your own contact details and click on it

your details open up with the address you dropped the pin on now in your address field.

click on edit at the top right hand side of the screen

now scroll down to the address and click on the address description at the side of the listed address and select either home, work other or add custom label.

The custom label is good for anything else you need to name. I have all our branches now listed under say, wolverhampton brach, telford branch etc. This way I can get siri to remind me where ever I want to go such as " remind me to get my tools back when i get to the "wolverhampton branch". Works 100% every time this way.

Hope this helps you guys out.

The key here is that it seems you have to add the location on YOUR OWN contact card - NOT just any entry in your address book. From reading other threads, I finally got the Location Services to work with Reminders. I can now say "remind me when I get home to ....." and it's working perfectly. It's so beautiful, that now I want to try to get it to work for other locations, for example: "remind me when I get to ShopRite to buy.....". I do have a contact set up for ShopRite and it has the address. If I ask Siri "What's the address for ShopRite?", she'll find it with no problem.

It looks like the only way I can do it is to go under MY CONTACT info, add the address for ShopRite, change the address label to "Shop right". Looks like it works, but this is a pain because there are hundreds of places I might want to set a location reminder for. It seems it should easily be able to handle "remind me when I get to John Doe's house" because John Doe is a contact and his address is in there.

Anyone find a better way?

GOT IT!!!!!!!!!! Ok, for those following along.....

Reminders, based on arriving or leaving a place, do work, and they work just as shown on the commercials. Few things needed:

1) Location must be set up as a Contact (with address, of course)

2) *** Contact can NOT be on Exchange server. This applies to your personal contact card also - NOT on Exchange server. Set it up as a Contact Card on the iPhone itself. ***

3) "Tasks" cannot associate with a Location - you have to set a "Reminder".

(Note: if u tell Siri to set a reminder, look at the screen - if it's labeled as "task", it will not work! If that's the case, do this.... Settings - Mail, Calendars, Contacts - (scroll to the very bottom) under 'Reminders', set the 'Default List' to "Reminders" (NOT 'Tasks'). Then go back one screen to 'Settings' - iCloud - (check to make sure 'Reminders' is ON so it will sync with iCloud).

Now, if u want to be reminded of something when u arrive at Joe Blow's house- make sure Joe Blow's contact card (with address) is ON IPHONE (not Exchange). All should be good.

I'm having this same problem, and it's driving me crazy. I have the address for my gym set with the custom label "gym" on my contact card, but Siri keeps telling me that she doesn't know where my gym is. I've tried all the solutions in this thread with no success. The most frustrating thing is that it was working for awhile and it just (randomly) stopped working. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, this is weird. I had a custom address label name "gym" It works when I say "my gym" but if I say "the gym" Siri tells me that it doesn't know where my gym is. So, I got to thinking, what if I actually custom label the address "the gym" since that's what I call it. So I did, and now Siri recognizes my gym address when I ask it to "set a reminder for when I get to the gym." So, for those still having trouble, try setting the custom label to "the gym" instead of just "gym." I know this seems stupid (and is quite a stupid programming error), but it's a fix.

This is exactly what I needed. I had figured out that Siri wasn't able to create location-based reminders for me becuase it was, by default, trying to create it as a Task in my Exchange account (even though the phrase I spoke was "Set a Reminder", not "Remind me of a Task", or "Create a Task", or anything that used the word "Task".)

What I could not do was find the way to change the default Reminder type. I did not even consider it would be under "Mail, Calendars and Contacts," but now that I see it there, I guess it makes *some* sense to put it there, but I was looking for a Settings section specifc to the Reminders App.

Thanks, Merrick. That was a nice tip.

Ok, there have been some odd speculations in here, let me help:

1) A newly added address needs to be absorbed into the system, don't ask me if it needs to float off to icloud or whatever, or even how long to wait, I don't know for sure, an half hour seems to work for me, your millage may vary....

2) Be sure your contact has a first and last name - even if you need to make it up. As an example, I have my local walmart stores listed as first name Walmart, last name [the city it's in] (I'm rural, in a larger city than mine, you might make it the street it's on instead of city). I also have one that is Walmart as the first name and Pharmacy as the last name.

3) Make sure you create the entry from the map application, or you add the address by using the map application, that seems to add some missing spice to the process as it is now, perhaps it adds the geo-coordinates, pehaps it just likes the little map icon in the photo space, I don't know, don't care either, I just know that adding the address from the map app helps. Here's how to do it in a nutshell: Find the place in the map app, tap the red pin, tap the blue arrow you will see on the marker that pops up, choose create a contact or add to existing contact whichever is apporpriate.

4) In SIRI, create your reminder and when it asks when you would like to be reminded, tell it, "When I arrive at (or get to or leave from or go to, etc.) Walmart Pharmacy." Substitute whatever first and last name you had created, of course. This seems to work for me most of the time, perhaps 4 out of 5 times. SIRI is in beta, after all, 4 out of 5 is not bad for beta.

After much Googling and piecing together multiple replies and posts, here is what you must do:

1. go to settings, then 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'

2. go to each of your email accounts and turn off 'reminders' and 'calendars'

3. go to iCloud and turn on 'reminders' and 'calendars'

Now, tell Siri "remind me to buy milk when I get to costco", or whatever.

As other posters have said, Siri needs to know your home address, so you will need to add yourself as a contact. The same is true for any address you want Siri to recognize (like Costco)
