iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

actually, turkey is one of the leading countries in technology application, both because the technology is implemented later and it is a cutthroat bussiness, where carriers both win a lot of money and have to invest accordingly just to be competitive...

the leading gsm carrier stays on top just because of its almost 99% coverage of the whole country and impelemtation of new technologies (except 4g)... almost none of my friends (along with me) use a landline other than for the obvious reason of adsl...

turkey may be seen as a 2,5 world country but some parts of turkey have more amenities than the cities in europe and us...

anyways back to the original topic, it has been more than 24 hours since i've changed my sim card and have not experienced any problems, everything's working as it should be... i even used my phone as a wifi hotspot for more than 4 hours, which put a dent in my battery but it is perfectly normal... 🙂

Hi, I am from Slovakia but live in Scotland. My 4S was purchased from Apple Online Store, so it was completly unlocked. I use Orange (Slovakia) and O2 (UK). I had exactly the same problem with my 4S on both networks after updated on 5.0.1.! I did cut both sim cards by my self with special equipment.

Today I change my old Orange sim for a new original Micro 3G sim card 128k and now its 2 hours since i change it and it seems everything working as it should work. Now I can make/receive calls, send/receive sms... Hopefully I will never have again this problems...

@katakulli

What I ment by that is, Where the western euorope countries are expected to be leading in technology we have been over taken by other countris such as Egypt and Turkey f.i

The thing is that Sweden and Finland was the first countries in the world to introduce mobile phones to the public.

We´ve had them for almost 30 years now.

Most of our systems are out dated and really need to be renewed.

I never ment to mention Turkey and Egypt in a negative sentence, and I´m well aware of that Turkey today are a leading country when it comes to electronic techology, specially when it comes to cars with immobilizers..

Sorry every one else for spinning of the main subject about the iphone 4s :-/

today i bought new sim for 1$ not from my carrier (just for test), all problems gone. Now there is no signal drop, i can recieve/make calls and sms, no problem with 3g and etc.

when i insert my carrier sim(old one), all problems came back. Then i insert new sim again and evrything works fine. Even battery drain is little bit lower. And when i eject sim, iphone immediately show No SIM (when i do this with old sim, iphone still show signal bars and carrier name for about 10min).

So i think, when i updated on 5.0.1 iphone somehow roasted my sim or whetever it did 🙂. (when i was on 5.0.0 evrything works fine)

Going to wisit my carrier, to take a new sim.

I've been having this problem since yesterday. I spoke with someone at Apple yesterday and I just updated her via email. They seem to be trying to work on it, and she asked for pics of my SIM card for the engineers per their request...so it looks like they're seeing it as a SIM issue as well, at this point. I got my SIM switched out last night to an identical one, but the phone worked fine all morning today, then after I popped it out to verify it was the same SIM, I put it back in and it has been doing the "cycling" again since. When I took it out this morning, it immediately noticed it was missing, and when I put it back in 2 minutes later, it immediately recognized it again. Yesterday when I did this, it had the same symptoms as noted here by others; still showed signla and carrier until I reset it. This DOES appear to be a SIM issue to me, but whether it's the SIM card itself, software, firmware, or hardware in the phone is hard to figure out...either way, you guys NEED to call or email Apple and tell them. Like others have said, Apple doesn't view these forums. This post has increased by over 2,000 views in the last 20 hours...the problem IS common, we just all need to tell Apple instead of only complaining to eachother and trying to figure out something that we're not equipped to do...

I've the same problems like many others here. I have iPhone 4S and with iOS 5.0 is everything fine. After I update iOS to 5.0.1, my GSM signal is dropping after 5 min. and my phone is simply unusable. I must restart whole phone to have another 5 mins. to call. I have Telefonica O2 provider in Czech Republic. I try replace my old, cutted SIM for new MicroSIM, but without any effect. It's very big fault from Apple and I doesn't understand why 5.0.2 (even beta) is still not available, or why there isn't (even temporary) possibility to downgrade to 5.0. If Apple doesn't release hot fix for this huge problem in a week I must sell my phone and buy older IP4. 😟

Another Irish user with this problem! Have tried all solutions mentioned on this thread and still the same problem. Wondering if it might have anything to do with me changing my sim password? Although i have disabled the sim password since. Either way Apple are getting a phone call first thing in the morning!! I suggest everyone else does the same so they know how many are affected by this!
