iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Ok i'm in French West indies Caribbean island and my Carrier is Orange, i've tried a brand new sim yesterday not microsim, they cutted it for me, not successfull, today i asked a guy at the shop to borrow me his microsim from orange, those micro sim they sell in contracts, i tested it for about 15 minutes in my 4S 5.0.1 it worked flawlessly no error on sms nor 3G or calls, unfortunelly they didn't had anymore Orange factory microsim today, they ordered for me from another shop in 48h i'll be sure about it, they'll change the old brand new not working sim with the microsim for free, i'm waiting but i've faith because i saw it working with no problems, even with the bug when you pull out the sim from the phone the carrier is still working with signal, with the microsim, this bug is not happening anymore you see immediatly the message NO SIM....i didn't try to reboot the phone but that's a good beginning....

I think I have cracked it. I have read every post and comments and tried and every possible fix. Does not work. I'm using iPhone 4S 16gig bought from Melbourne, use in Cambodia carrier Mobitel.

Issue, no signal. 3G come and go. I have to on and off to get back signal sometime aeroplane mode on and off. My iPhone is useless. It was fine on 5.0 problem only exist after I update to 5.0.1.

I tried my GF sim card and everything works fine, signal is full. I switch back to old sim problem come back. Today I went to the carrier and get me a new sim (does not matter 32k or 128k, they only have 32k btw, same sim I used before) And now, its fine. Its been 3 hours now. Normal I have no signal every 15-20 min I have restart and attempt to call someone to get back signal. I think when 5.0.1 was installed, something in the OS messed up the sim card. However that sim card still works fine on iPhone 4/3GS and other phone.

I know some people have tried this and still have that issue. I know your frustration. If issue still persist, keep trying different sim cards. You will see the different. I hope it works for you. Now for me I am inclined to not update software without prior research on forums.

Well I have (had the exact same issue)

I called apple and logged a call.

the responce I got was frustraiting but some what helpfull.

I had an Iphone 4 before my 4s. Apple technical support says that the microsim from the apple 4 isn't compatible with the 4s, they told me that all the providers in europe were told about this before the lunch and they should give out new sims.

Now I explained that I was in Kazakhstan for the moment and wanted to know the differances so I could tell the local providers. They did not have this info but they told me to try with a card that had not been used on any other phone.

I did this 30 min ago, so far it does work ( the line use to drop every 5-10 min )

Will post agin if this does not work

Hej Nesse10,

I am also using Tele2 sverige with my new Iphone 4s and I also got the problem. I sent this link too to the support of Tele2 sverige through their mailing support service. I hope I will get an answer asap because right now the phone is pretty much useless.

I am also wondering if the battery life problem is not connected to the fact that the phone tries a lot to keep in touch with the network, issuing a lot of requests, which probably use a lot of battery....

Me and my friend Sven ordered iPhone 4S at the same time. And we both have Tele2. We both have 5.0.1. His phone is working fine, not mine.

So, I tested the 4 possible combinations:

• Svens SIM in Svens iPhone: Works fine.

• Svens SIM in my iPhone: Works fine.

• My SIM in Svens iPhone: Works fine.

• My SIM in my iPhone: Does not work.

A few differences:

1. I ordered a new SIM from Tele2 because I did not have a Micro-SIM, and Sven cut his old SIM to fit.

2. I updated to 5.0.1 from 5.0 with iTunes sync, Sven used the new built in update feature.

3. I am a developer and used the iOS 5 beta for a while on my old 3GS, before iOS 5 was released, Sven never installed the beta. Though I doubt this has to do with it.
