iPhone 4S high pitch noise

I've noticed a suddle but noticable high pitch noice whenever the iPhone is connected to a stereo via the headphones jack. This is especially noticable in my car. The noise starts when any audio output comes on (Siri, unlocking phone, Music app, Spotify app) and goes away shortly after audio is terminated. My old iPhone 3GS does not have this problem even with the new iOS 5 update.

Has anyone noticed this? I can't listen to music on my iPhone in the car because it's annoying.

Thanks,

Dawid

Hi guys,

I read elsewhere from a iPhone 4S teardown report the following:

"COMPLEX STRUCTURE LOTS OF COMPONENTS TIED INTO ALL OF THEM

The iPhone 4S internal design is complex, as more parts are now grouped together including the headphone jack that feeds the reception cable. We anticipate that the repair for the headphone jack will be expensive and maybe even more difficult than the iPhone 4 CDMA model."

I think this might explain the different experiences in your cars between iPhone 4 and 4S.

Annoying problem, this didn't happened with my old 3GS nor with my wife's White iPhone 4S. But with my new black 16gb iPhone 4S my car aux makes a high tone noise whenever it plays music, ringtone, alert or anything. It doesnot happen with headphones, only with my car (BMW Z4 2011). Same set up, the only hange is the phone.

If I connect the iPhone 4S using the USB connector, it works fine, but sometimes I preffer to use the aux input to have better control of my playlists.

Please let me know how to fix it.

Strangely the fix of turning it to 100% works on my wife's 4s, but not mine. I still get a fair amount of hiss, though it does drop a little bit at 100%.

I'd like to add that this is in a 2010 Ford Focus. I see a lot of people are experiencing this in bmw's but in case any apple people are listening, it isn't just the beemers having this issue. I would greatly appreciate them acknowledging this issue and stating whether it's hardware or software. This combined with the lousy battery life is really making me second guess my switch to the iphone from android.

I may be able to help you all diagnosis this problem if you attach an audio or video file as a sample of the acoustic noise heard (recorded by another quiet device). A recording of the quiet part of song or whatever would be best. I will do an analysis in the frequency domain and post the results. I'm an analog hardware design engineer that works on this type problem often.

This isnt an issue just on the iPhone 4s... I have an iPad 2 and it is also making an annoying high pitched frequency noise.

Could it be the metal frame interrupting the conductive materials supplying the sound?

Could it be a poor AUX lead? Would a gold tipped one make any difference?

It ***** for me and friends on a journey in my 1 series 2011 - long journeys are met with tinnitus at the end.

NOT COOL.

Please get some kind of fix for this soon!!!!!

Horrible sound for me too.

But I'm glad to learn I'm not alone. Thought about changing the phone.

I have tried several car chargers, several AUX cables and several iPhone 4S in several cars.

The 4S can't be used to listen to music. It has constant interferences.

I did use my 3GS with crystal clear music!

Result: I'm back to my 3GS and my 4S is in a drawer for now. Had to buy back a non-micro SIM to be able to use my 3GS!

I just don't get it.

Just like you, if I use my headphones though there is no interferences.

Just to chime in here. I'm a new iPhone 4s owner, having previously had an HTC Desire and can confirm I'm having the same problem in a 2011 ford fiesta. Symptoms are:

• Hissing / static noise when playing music. Playing at 100% makes the hissing more quiet but definitely still there. Putting the volume at anything other than 100% makes listening to music unbearable.

• Static turns to an ear wincingly bad squeal / hiss when an in car charger is plugged in and music playing.

• I don't get any of these problems with an iPod classic, iPod nano or HTC Desire.
