iPhone 4S high pitch noise

I've noticed a suddle but noticable high pitch noice whenever the iPhone is connected to a stereo via the headphones jack. This is especially noticable in my car. The noise starts when any audio output comes on (Siri, unlocking phone, Music app, Spotify app) and goes away shortly after audio is terminated. My old iPhone 3GS does not have this problem even with the new iOS 5 update.

Has anyone noticed this? I can't listen to music on my iPhone in the car because it's annoying.

Thanks,

Dawid

Hi all there experiencing this problem,

I do experience the same issue in my BMW 120d. tried all the solutions proposed here (not the pocket dock though) nothing worked.

I have noticed the car speakers would let out some noise when the jack connector would touch the metal stripe of the iPhones body.

Also, I have tried to pull out the jack from the iphone 4s when playing music through aux and the noise clears up when the jack is just on the verge of disconnecting.

I found a cheap solution (at least for me). Back in the early days, iPhones wouldn't take any headphone expect their own. The jack was too small to accept normally sized plugs. I had a pigtail to fix that. I tried this in my 4s and the whine went away. (also in a mini). They are still available online like from here:

good luck.

I contacted BMW and they told me that the new iPhone 4s may have too advanced software for the car (2005 reg) and that the software update in the car would be a couple of hours of labour = a couple of hundreds £.

I suspect it wouldn't help anyway as people seem to experience the same problem on much newer cars.

I have decided to go for: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0043MASE4/ref=sc_pgp__m_A3AGE3ZJYRAB2V_1?ie= UTF8&m=A3AGE3ZJYRAB2V&n=&s=&v=glance

it is less than 3£. Hope it will work.

I got the send station pocket dock and the issue is resolved for now with my BMW X3. The high pitched noise is completely gone. Tested it with a bunch of different mp3s on my 4s. Sound quality is excellent. Actually notice the highs and bass are coming in much more pronounced now, then when I used the headphone jack. And it's nice because I also got a USB cable charger for the cigarette lighter so I can charge while listening to music, taking calls, or whatever just like before. Both cables fit perfectly into the pocket dock inputs. The pocket dock connector fits perfectly into the 4s sync connector as well.

Couple of things:

I would warn anyone against trying to plug the charger into the cigarette lighter while your listening to music. You'll get a very loud electrical pop through your speakers. Just plug it in before you start listening to music, or pause the music, then plug it in.

Make sure the audio cable is inserted all the way into the pocketdock connector. If it's even a hair out, you'll lose the right side of your audio signal immediately. Even though I would like to use the thicker tougher 3.5 cable I used with the headphone jack previously that was bought at Best Buy, even with it shoved in all the way into the pocket dock jack, I still lose the right side of the audio. Since the pocketdock cable is very thin, I would be careful to just keep it shoved down along the passenger side seat, but make sure it doesn't get stuck when moving the seat back or forth in the gear track.

I was loving driving around today cranking my music. Sounds great.

Issue resolved for me so last post here. Good luck everyone. Hopefully they still get the headphone jack issue fixed eventually.

The thing about the 30pin connector solution is you cannot control your music via the iphone's ipod app. You are forced to use the head unit, which in my 335i is a completly terrible experience. I've had that cable since I bought the car and yes it gets rid of the noise, but it makes controlling my music unbearable, which Is why I bought the headphone cable to begin with for my 3gs. I don't see this as a solution, there is some sort of problem in the phone that needs to be addressed.

I also mentioned a few posts ago that my phone also has a feedback (quieter though) noise through the ear piece while making a call, every call. I'm guessing it isnt related because no one else seems to mention it.

Same problem here, I have a 2008 BMW 328. So glad I paid extra for the 64GB phone! Very annoying. Oddly, all the Macbook Pro (2007 model) had the very same problem when listening through high quality headphones. Some sort of impedance mismatch. My macbook was only fixed after the sound card died completely and had to be replaced.

As an aside, I use one of these in my car between the iPhone and the belkin 3.5mm cord

http://bit.ly/ucFo0P (headphone adapter with microphone)

- the button on it lets me skip through songs or pause the music the same way the apple headphone control works - and I can make a call on it (no bluetooth optioin on my car). Anyway when I turn the volume all the way down on it, the awful noise is reduced a lot - which leads me to believe it is an impedance problem. It seems like the high frequencies are cut off a lot too, with my 3GS phone I left the volume all the way up. I don't want to lose that control ability by using a dock connector.

I have been having the same problem everyone is experiencing. It is not the car at all it the Iphone 4s fault. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON "TRYING" TO FIX THE PROBLEM THROUGH THE CAR. All you have to do is buy a product like the pocketdock line-out mini usb or anything similar to it. It will run you about $30 but in the long run its somewhat worth it because it will improve your music/sound quality. It's kind of a bummer that you have to buy something more to make the Iphone do what it is supposed to do but hopefully Apple will fix the problem. In the meantime get a PocketDock or something similar to it, it will fix all the problems.
