800 MHz G4 imac- what is the most RAM

I can install? I am at 512. And I would buy a new intel imac, but too many software issues right now. So I want to stall. How much and how do I do it?
Thanks.

Virgil,

The most is 1Gb of PC133 SDRAM in an iMac 800 (There are rumours of 2Gb but I've yet toi hear any confirmation of that).

You need:

  • PC133 SDRAM 168pin DIMM in the 'factory' slot
  • PC133 SDRAM 144pin SODIMM in the 'user' slot.

To check you current configuration go (Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info (This opens Apple System Profiler). You will see a memory section look for:

J20/DIMM/256Mb PC133 322
J22/SODIMM/256Mb PC133 222

or something similar (I'm going from memory here - excuse the pun).

Go to a reputable dealer like Crucial who will guarantee the RAM you buy will work in your iMac. Ramseeker shows the range of prices you should expect.

Here are the instructions for getting to the 'factory' slot (the 'user' slot installation should be self explainatory if you're undertaking this task!!! 😉 ).

You may also wish to consider a HD and Optical drive update at the same time to save doing it later.

The key point is to replace the Thermal Paste when you close the machine up to prevent it overheating.

You do realise that most software will work okay on Intel Macs using 'Rosetta' emulation (installed as standard on ICD Macs). However, I would agree and let others beta test these machines. I like to run the nearly final version of a product line - tried and tested!!!

Thank you Adam,
That really helps. Unfortunately, I have 2 x 256. So I would have to buy 2 x 512. And I'd rather save the money and put it towards a new computer. So, I will suffer with this incredibly slow 10.4.4. I have a Powerbook too, so if I need more speed I can shift over. Any thoughts on when they may REDESIGN the IMACS? I love this lamp model. The new ones aren't as appealing to me.
Thanks!

I love the iLamp too.. Now we aren't allow to speculated about future Apple plans on these boards but I think I can say that Steve Jobs has gone on record as saying that he belives the current iMac design is 'perfect'. Interestingly, the iMac ICD is first iMac to get a new processor without the re-designed case. Personally I would only expect incremental changes in design in the near future! (hopefully to thin the edges around the display down and arrange the ports in a more accessible position...
