How can I remove an old phone number from iMessage

I have an old iphone 3GS that has been upgraded to IOS5 and I am letting my son use. He is loving the iMessage, however there is one problem - the phone number that used to be associated with that 3GS is still associated with the iMessage settings and so whenever I iMessage my wife at that phone number (or anyone else for that matter), he also gets the message.

I have added in his email in the "You can be reached for messages at:" settings option, but I cannot delete the phone number. Any idea how I can get the phone number removed from the iMessage settings? I want him to be able to send / receive iMessages via his email address - not the phone number that belongs to my wife.

I did try removing the sim from the phone, but that didn't work.

Thanks

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5

Same problem, but disabling iMessage isn't a solution for me. Is reseting the entire phone the answer?

My partner now uses my old iPhone like an iPod (w/o cellular service). Despite the fact that each phone is associated with a different Apple ID and each is set to receive messages at different email addresses, we're still both receiving all iMessages at the same phone number. Ideally we could simply delete the phone number from the old phone, but that's not permitted.

I cannot remove the old phone number from the settings of iMessage and iFaces at all.

I tried:

- turning iMessage off and on again

- reset network settings to factory defaults

- removed SIM card, wiped the phone and turned it off. Put SIM in, restarted iPhone and installed backup.

I do not know where the old number is stored. So my simple solution:

Stay away from iMessage and use "Whatsup" or "Skype". I never cared for "iFaces" i rather stay with "Skype".

This only began for me with iOS6. I (or thought I had) already removed the number from my old 3GS. Now my son gets my SMS messages, and I get nothing. It's not even connected to a mobile network, it's taking texts from any Apple product to my phone number and pushing them VIA wi-fi to his device, but not mine. Potential security issue here Apple?

I just want to remove my phone number from iMessage on your system. If I had the phone handy, I suppose I could just smash it. I may have to change my phone number at my own expense. I note the lack of support.
