Using a Verizon iPhone 4s, need to disable CDMA in China???

Is there an option to select only GSM for the Verizon iPhone 4s? The battery is draining about 10% an hour with the phone idle (fetch enabled, all asynchronous pushes disabled). The carrier on the top left of the phone indicates "Roaming".

Having used other world phone devices in the past (Blackberry), the Blackberry had a mechanism to disable CDMA. Once CDMA was disabled, the battery issue went away. I suspect the iPhone suffers from the same problem.

That's very interesting. You said that you unlocked the SIM, did you have to call Verizon and request the unlock? Can you do that for any country you travel in? Have you been a Verizon customer for longer than 60 days or does the 60 day rumor matter?

Yes, you have to have been a VZW customer in good standing for at least 60 days. It's the phone that's unlocked, not the SIM. Once the phone is unlocked, it's unlocked.

How does this help the issue that the iPhone automatically defaults to CDMA in an environment with both CDMA/GSM? Won't the phone still do that regardless of whether it is unlocked?

Also, once you unlock it, is there any downside if you have a global plan with Verizon? will i lose that plan? will i not be able to swap in and out my VZW card and a local sim card after they fix this issue? Sounds like having an unlocked phone regardless of this issue is a plus? should i go ahead and get them to do this for me?
