You guys have it all wrong, there's 2 clouds, the iCloud that just came out which took over mobileme and the iTunes in the Cloud which holds your iTunes store purchases.

Since you had an iTunes account before your mobileme account those account will stay separate and you cannot combine them or transfer anything to and from them...

Use your mobileme address for the iCloud...

Use your regular email address for the iTunes store under settings>store.

If you really have to change it to a 3rd email address if the one it's currently under isn't a valid one.

    Hope this help, thanks.

imanog, I know you're trying to be helpful, but we're not talking about merging two Apple IDs or MobileMe accounts. That's not the issue here in this particular thread.

We're talking about having one Apple ID with no previous MobileMe account ever.  When you sign up for iCloud using an existing Apple ID, you get the opportunity to add a brand new @me.com email address to it.  However, that new address gets stuck as an "alternative" address and cannot be made the "primary" address.

In other words, both your existing address and brand new @me.com address are assigned to one Apple ID (not two), and it has nothing to do with existing MobileMe accounts.

We would like a way to ditch the existing "primary" address and use the brand new @me.com address as the only one assigned to the Apple ID, so that correspondence from Apple about iCloud does not continue to be sent to our previous address that we had before we signed up for iCloud.

Only want to quote this to underline that THIS is our problem.

EDIT: I just found this https://discussions.apple.com/message/16335074#16335074 . Seems that, for now, is not possible to make the new @me addres the primary address. Seems that Apple is working on this, too.

Same issue for me (as mentioned earlier in the thread):

I have a @btinternet.com address and want to get rid of it and send all correspondence to my @me.com address (created when i signed up to icloud). As per falconer, i get the following message:

"You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID."

I've not had a previous mobileMe account. This is purely based on iCloud setup.

Tried to call Apple today on this but was on hold for 30 mins.... Will update the thread if I find a solution. Thanks

    oh okay, sorry about that.

yeah that would have to be handled by mobileme support not any other apple department.

that's pretty dumb of apple to offer that when it obviously doesn't work.

imanog, I suggest you check https://appleid.apple.com before you make statments like this. A single Apple ID can be used for:

iTunes, iChat, MobileMe, Apple Online Store (inc App Store), Apple Retail Stores, and here Apple.com Support

It does appear that this list is slightly out-of-date: I think it should also say that the same Apple ID can be used for:

    iCloud, Facetime, Find Friends

My issue is just the opposite.  I want to keep my primary email address but now that I've added icloud, it won't receive anything on my mac...although I do on my iphone and ipad.

I had the same issue with mobilme and had to disable.  How do I disable icloud?

  • ennio99 Level 1 Level 1 (25 points)

kathleenfromburlington, if you mean how do you disable iCloud on your Mac, have a look at:

System Preferences > iCloud > Sign Out, or check/uncheck the various iCloud services

Take your 45K points... roll them up... and stuff them up your iHole.

Being the curious creature I am, I signed out of iTunes and signed in using my @me email with my @gmail ID password and it signs in as @gmail. Its very obvious the accounts are linked, so its weird that you cant choose which email you want to be your default email/ID.

My problem ist similar, but not the same:

I have an old @t-online.de address, which I used to create an iTunes Store account when I was still in the Windows world... now that's long ago !

I then bought the iMac, and because it seemed very convenient, created the @mobile.me account, not only for me, but for the whole family. It was and still is completely spam-free, which is why I then switched to using the mobile.me account as my regular email acct. The t-online account is just sitting there, receiving spam and I don't really know what to do with it. I don't use it regularly, just look into it from time to time...

However, I never changed the t-online address for the iTunes store, because I just didn't think it was necessary.

When I now try to change the store account into the mobile.me account (on the apple ID website under 'manage your account'), the website doesn't let me, giving me the error message (you...can't create an apple ID using a mobile.me account etc.).

Having recently bought an iPhone 4S, complicates matters further, because it needs a connection to the app store (question - is the app store identical with the iTunes store ??) and supposedly also to the iCloud.

Now my question: which email account am I supposed to use for what, i.e. for iCloud, iTunes, email ? Somehow, I came out of all these settings procedures on the iPhone with my t-online account as iCound ID, but I wonder if thats right or wrong ?

The guys at apple support don't know either what to do.

    TOTALLY CONFUSED....

    Can anyone help ??

    caramanza,

the account which currently holds your iTunes purchases is the logical account to use for iTunes.

The iCloud (MobileMe) account you setup is just that in effect - a mobileme account. You can use this for iTunes/App Store (They are the same account/purchasing mechanism) however you'd essentially be unable to use your previous purchases on your iDevice as it can only handle one iTunes account at a time.

    Hope this helps!

I also am seeing this happen to me and I hope to see a fix soon. I provided feedback to apple to their feedback page.
