iPhone 4S not working with Subaru iPod connector.

I have a 2008 Subaru Impreza with an iPod interface kit I purchased and installed within the last year. My old iPhone 4 (with iOS5) charges and plays music properly with the kit, but my new 4S only charges. I'm sure others have this problem but I was wondering if anyone knows if this issue is fixable with a firmware update or if they locked out these kind of iPod connectors and if I should consider just replacing my car's head unit. Thanks!

I tried it three times last night. I turned my Blutooth off, my wifi, and my passcode off. Played music. Reset the phone. Plugged it in as soon as the Apply symbol showed up. HU read "Attached". As soon as the battery symbol showed up with the "slide to unlock", it started the same old "attached-detached-attached..." on the HU.

This stinks. Why is this not working!?! It has to be a programming thing.

Well, I hate to see so many people with similar problems, but at least I'm glad to know I'm not alone. I've had my 4s for all of 10 days. It worked fine with the "Y" connector in my 2008 BMW 3-series until yesterday. Just like the classic iPod I've used for almost 2 years with this system, for the first week plus, I simply plugged the iPhone in and I could control its functions through the car's iDrive entertainment/nav system. Yesterday, it wouldn't even recognize that there was anything connected. Same with a dock at home that I have connected to my stereo system. Actually, with both, if I start music playing then connect it, the music will play through the system, but I cannot "see" the iPhone or any of its contents on my system, and I cannot control the iPhone at all using the iDrive controls in the car or the RF remote with the dock at home. That also worked fine the first week plus. Very frustrating. Will try the reboot idea, but it's absurd that this would be necessary every time. Very frustrated!

BTW, mine's a 64 GB; anyone else? I ask only because, in Googling around, I seem to be stubmling across an inordinantly high incidence of such problems with the 64 GB model, though I can't imagine why that should make any difference.

What you just described is literally IDENTICAL to what happened to me.

I have a 64 GB iPhone 4S. The first week I plugged it into my car and into a stereo and it worked fine (just like you). Now all of a sudden it is not working in either of them.

I have found that for some reason, if I bend the connector or wiggle it around and hold it, the music will come through, however once I stop bending back the connector the iPhone disconnects again.

IF you hear any solutions from apple or anywhere, please let me know! I'm very frustrated as well, but glad I'm not alone...

Just a little positive update, in case it helps.

I did not do a full "hard reset", but this morning I tried simply turning my phone off for about 5 minutes and turning it back on. After that, I connected the phone to my car as usual, and it did work as it had before yesterday: the iPhone was recognized by the iDrive system; the contents appeared on the iDrive screen and I was able to control the iPhone from the car's iDrive system ... eventually. It was a bit buggy at first, but it did ultimately work again like it had before. By "buggy", I mean that - at first - there was a significant lag between me selecting an iPhone item or function from the car's controls and the iPhone responding; and at first it would not let me scroll through the album list. But, after a few minutes, it seemed to be working just as it had before. I did not restart the phone while connected to the car, as suggested above with a "reset", and this might have improved the initial behavior; not sure; may try this the next time.

I say "next time" because, unfortunately, the pessimist in me has no illusions that this is a permanent fix. Also, I have not tested it with my in-home stereo dock yet, but will do so tonight.

So, there ya go. Hope maybe this will help someone else.

I haven't had a single issue with getting the 4S to dock with all sorts of different docks and connectors. It's worked flawlessly every time. My wife has an iPod/Bluetooth kit that I installed in her 2006 Mazda3. It plays my 4S without a single hitch. The kit was very similar to the Subaru iPod kit. I still can't understand why there is a problem.

Hey everyone,

So I installed iOS 5.0.1 today and still no luck connecting to either my stereo dock or my car dock.

I'm starting to think it's a dock connector hardware issue and I'm going to have to take it in. It just doesn't make sense that it would work for a week on both and then suddenly stop. Then of course when I bend the cable a little bit it seems that suddenly it makes "contact" and the music goes through, but it charges regardless.

Very frustrating, very confusing.

I'll try to take it to the apple store tomorrow and see if there's any updates from there...

I just stated having problems with my iPhone 4S AFTER the iOS 5.0.1 update. I have a JVC KD-R600 head unit with USB using doc connector cable. As stated above, a phone reboot and it will connect and play once. After any reconnect the head unit will play for about 2 seconds then goto "Stop" on the display. The Head unit supports two connect modes. iPod Mode and Head Unit Mode. My issues are in iPod Mode as that is my prefferred mode where it lets me select music and podcasts on the iPhone. However i did switch to Head Unit mode and not it works but i have to naviate iPhone/iPod menus on the head unit.

This happened to me several times in the past with certain iOS release from 1.0 - to 5.0. (yes i've owned every iPhone). Unfortunately it is most likely a software issue and MAY be fixed in a future release.

Here is some things to try...

Force iPod/Music app to close.

Method 1: Double Tap home button, hold tap on Music/iPod icon until you get the red close badge. they tap that to close the Music/iPod app.

Method 2: Open the Music/iPod app. Hold sleep/power switch until swipe to power off appears and release. Now hold home button (about 4 sec) until home screen appears. Re-open Music/iPod app.

Now try and connect via Dock connector to head unit.

For now i'll have to use analog Aux jack...

Hope this helps!

I just got my iPhone 4s yesterday, and since my iPhone 4 worked flawlessly with the ipod connection in my 09 WRX, I would only have assumed that the 4s would be the same. I cant get it to play anything! I tried rebooting several times and nothing! Did they change the pinouts for the 4s? Not sure if this is software or hardware, but I fear that they wont be fixing this as Apple usually ignores these kinds of requests/issues. Is there any way we can officially report this issue?

2011 WRX Premium Sound

iPhone 4 w/ OS 5.01

I see "UNSUPPORTED" on the screen everytime it doesn't work. Everything was working fine for months with iOS5.0 beta and iOS 5.0 GM until two days ago when I got "UNSUPPORTED" on the screen of the in dash receiver.

-Updating to 5.01 didn't help.

-Rebooting the phone didn't help

-Force Quitting the Music app didn't help

What did temporarily help though disconnecting the battery lead from the car for 5 minutes then reconnecting it today (while using iOS 5.01) did allow music to playback to work the next time the iPhone was connected but only for that one time, now I'm getting "UNSUPPORTED" again.

To me this seems like a software bug and specifically a state machine issue, though it's unclear if it's caused by the iOS or the head unit, but it must be that something in iOS has changed that it replies with "UNSUPPORTED" rather than just working like it used to. This is either a bug in iOS or a change that was made in iOS that it now doesn't work around issues that it used to.

Note: I've also noticed that my home alarm clock radio can no longer charge my iPhone though I can still play music through it, so clearly apple has made changes to some dock related detection / charger detection functionality.

Interesting, I hadnt had any issues with my iPhone 4 and my Subaru iPod connecton, but I was only on 5.0, not 5.0.1. I tried EVERYTHING to get my iPhone 4S to play audio though the connector yesterday, I couldnt get a peep. It shows up as DETACHED when plugged in, but it does recognize that it is connected to a dock becuase under the Airplay setting on Pandora, it shows that the audio device selected is the dock. When I do a reboot of the phone while connected, during the boot up it will show as ATTACHED for a few seconds before going back to DETACHED. I used my phone in my car everyday! This *****!

I figured out a solution!!

Instead of using the 3rd party iPad Griffin 2.1 amp USB to dock connector cable that was working fine for the last 11 months, I switch to using a Apple white cable that came with my iPhone and boom instantly it started working, and I can unplug and plug it back in and it continues working everytime. I tried this on a whim and it worked. Comparing closely I can tell that both the USB end of the cable to the center console and the dock connector to the iPhone both plug in a little bit more firmly and tightly than the other cable I was using.
