an iphone has been detected but could not be identified properly

I just installed ios5 on my iPhone 3GS and synced my phone with iTunes. I also enabled wifi sync. Now, whenever I open iTunes, I get the error dialog "An iPhone has been detected but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again." Closing the dialog just causes it to reappear, so I can't use iTunes at all. My phone is not connected to the computer so I obviously can't disconnect it. Please help?

Same issue here - my BIGGEST complaint is that the window pops up over and over and over and over and over again. How hard is it to have the pop-up come up once? I click ok - the pop-up is acknowledged. For the love of all things holy, do some basic checking within the software and determine if the popup has been displayed on the screen. Even better, let me select a box to not warn me again. Frankly, I don't really care to see this issue over and over. Just sync or don't sync. Keep a little log somewhere that I can go to if I'm having problems. Perhaps even a little hyperlink to a support KB article with steps for resolution?

To have such beautifully designed devices and user interfaces yet miss the mark on such easy annoyance is just careless!

I think the real problem here is that, for some reason, iTunes isn't properly handling an iphone that has left the wifi network. I can link up my phone, and sync or not as I wish, and there are no problems. There are no problems for hours. Should I walk out the door and take my phone out of range of my wifi, this error pops up.

The secondary issue is that the message seems to queue up. When I get back within wifi range, the dialog has appeared. Depending on the length of time I have been away, more or less messages will appear. This indicates that it isn't a fresh popup each time, but popups that have queued up every x minutes. Since I have just arrived home after 48 hours away from home, I have quite a few of these things to click away now.

This seems to be a simple matter to fix in iTunes by apple. Never pop the dialog up at all. Simply place a yellow exclamation point (Use some color, Apple. It's okay) next to that device, or allow it to dissapear once from the list and popup the message corresponding to this dissapearance. Because iTunes doesn't seem to be releasing the device when it goes out of range, perhaps there should be some developer attention to the handling of this.

It's a very frustrating thorn on an otherwise lovely rose, but that sucker just keeps on sticking.
