an iphone has been detected but could not be identified properly

I just installed ios5 on my iPhone 3GS and synced my phone with iTunes. I also enabled wifi sync. Now, whenever I open iTunes, I get the error dialog "An iPhone has been detected but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again." Closing the dialog just causes it to reappear, so I can't use iTunes at all. My phone is not connected to the computer so I obviously can't disconnect it. Please help?

I am having same problem. Have latest itunes 10.5 on windoes 7. Shows all my devices (iphone 4s, iphone 4 and ipad) all on ios5 in device list even if not connected and displays following message intermittently.

"An iPhone has been detected but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again."

I have to kill itunes and restart the application. When connected via USB, all devices are synched properly though. It is just irritating why itunes think the iphone is connected when it was not.

Check that the driver for the iPod/iDevice is installed in Windows. Right-click on My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager. Make sure there are no USB devices with ? or ! next to them.

If there is, try right-clicking on them and uninstalling and then rightclick on any item in the list on the right side -> "Scan for hardware changes" and let it try to find the driver.

Fixed this problem yesterday by this method with a 6th generation iPod shuffle.

I am also experiencing a similar problem. The popup error window reappears repeatedly, but I can make it go away after clicking on it. Sometimes is takes 10 or more times, but it will go away for awhile.

Additionally, iTunes doesn't seem to recognize when a device is no longer connected via wifi, e.g. someone takes an iPhone or iPad out of the house. iTunes appears to be trying to reconnect to the device, and if it's selected in iTunes the process will eventually fail after several minutes, but iTunes is unusable while it tries to reconnect to the device.

Wifi sync enabled on all devices.

I FOUND the solution. It was painful and time consuming but it's fixed the problem 100%.

I removed all Apple software from my PC. ALL OF IT.

Then I rebooted.

Then I ran CC Cleaner to remove any leftover Apple entries from the registry.

Then reinstalled iTunes and the problem is GONE. All of my problems (with iTunes anyway) are gone.

So it's a bit radical, but for me it worked. Luckily this doesn't affect your library, so reinstalling iTunes puts you right back where you were, but everything should now work!

Good luck!

Do a google search for cccleaner. It's a free utility for windows. Run the registry scan and then remove any left over entries for Apple software. Be careful with it though if you let it remove everything it finds for all other programs you could cause more trouble. Just look for any Apple entries and only remove those.

You could try removing the software through the control panel add/remove programs, reboot and then reinstall without messing with cc cleaner. You'd probably be ok with that. If your not familiar with the registry don't mess with cc cleaner as it can cause more problems than it solves if your not careful.
