iOS5 & iPad 1 - BIG Decrease in performance

Ever since I upgraded to the new iOS has anyone experienced a big drop in performance on their iPad 1? I have been experiencing big delays in response time from when I type until the keys actually process, delays in gestures, browser delays, email is slow, when apps are running they are very slow and barely usable. It's almost like I have dial-up where a little bit will run at a time. I have reinstalled the iOS and still get the same issues. The thing is barley usable which is a shame given all the new features. It's the "best operating system" that I can't use....... I guess I will need to downgrade back to 4. If you are experiencing issues please let me know or respond here so we can let them know more about it.

MAJOR UPDATE: Okay, hopefully this will be of some help to people. I was using iCloud right from the start on my iPad 1, and I had poor performance right out of the gate. Someone, either on this thread or another (I can't remember which, and can't scroll back to check) suggested that turning off iCloud for everything except Documents and Data brought the performance back up to about 95% of what it was before.

Well... Just for kicks and giggles, I thought I'd try turning off iCloud completely, just to see what it would do. Turning all those other items off had done nothing for me, so I turned off Documents and Data as well. As soon as I did, performance returned completely to normal. Literally. Not even a reboot. Ran Angry Birds, and had no problems at all, yet three minutes earlier, Angry Birds crashed continually.

I tested all my other apps that we're having problems: safari, numbers, pages, omni outliner, omni focus, etc. all of them are performing normally now.

So I turned iCloud back on for Documents and Data, and everything is okay now. This is actually back to mostly usable. I'm finding, as I'm typing this, that the occasional mistyped word goes through, but everything else is pretty much okay. I can definitely live with this until Apple can really narrow down the problem and release a fix.

I really hope this solves it for someone else, too!

iPad 1 32gb 3G

I was very excited when OS 5 arrives. Now I wish I had never installed it. I like many of you are suffering with a slow and unresponsive device. Program frequently crash, keyboard is slow, pages take triple the time they normally do to open.

Took my IPad to the genius bar, they said to reinstall OS 5. That did not help at all. I returned to the genius bar. The tech tried to replicate the issue and he could not. He was a bit of an *** as well. This happens frequently enough to be very annoying.

I would like to return my device to 4.3.5... I will not be forced into IPad 2 !!!!

What is Apple doing about this??

I spent what I thought was a lot of money to buy one of the last 64GB 3G Ipad 1. It was new and factory sealed. First Itunes sync offered IOS5, I thought that would be great and accepted the upgrade. The Ipad is so slow it is unusable 😠 . Slow to launch Safari. Slow to launch Facebook app. Slow to launch app store. Intermittent Ipad is not connected to the Internet messages.

I thought the problem may be that I didn't have an activated 3g account so I turned off the 3G radio. That didn't help.

I have 30 days to return it, and it is probably going back.

Boo Apple!

I would explore this further--maybe even with Apple. I've said this earlier in the thread--I have a 64GB wifi Ipad 1 with lots and lots of apps, and LOTS of content. I turned off many notifications but not all, have Photostream on but my apps open generally quite reasonably fast, as Huffington Post for instance. I have a number of friends with Ipad 1, IOS 5 but not as much content or apps as mine and all wifi. They don't feel they are having any slowdown in performance. I've had my Ipad since May 2010 so have gone through several firmware upgrades. Is it as fast as before, maybe not quite as fast but not annoyingly slow either. BTW I stream movies and music all the time with no stuttering at all.

You are precisely what is wrong with apple's user base. Google "ipad's slow down," and the reason why - low ram environment. And from the first day ios 5 was made available, until now - ipad 1 users are still suffering. Not me, because I've already sold mine, so I shouldn't even be here anymore. There's nothing paranoid about this. "sigh." I think I'm entitled to my opinion which originated from a bad experience - and I'm not alone.

My iPad is super slow 64g 3G This happened just recently after subscription to iCloud. I deleted unused apps and did several resets. The machine is just One year old and it's already obsolete. When I open the App store it crashes, Safari crashes, video apps crashes. I noticed that since I updated apps that have retina support they become unresponsive because of slowness. Typing is a nightmare since everything is so delayed. I am a veteran in Mac and tablets. I had several Maemo devices, Psion, etc. what surprises me is that I have to upgrade my machine after 1 year and 3 months of purchase. I am not impressed and seriously thinking on what to do since I invested so much money in apps.

I was thinking my Ipad 1 was somewhat faster. I have 64 GB wifi with lots of apps and content. Upgrade was a bit hairy but everything is pretty good now, Imessaging seems a bit "haunted" as my friend said (it works fine sometimes, other times it requires me adding a photo in order to get a functional send button), Icloud backup using PC control panel can't be used because I have Home version of Office without Outlook and I can't delete individual photos from Photostream so turned it off (makes one consider a Mac LOL)l. But---many things are better---and I do think faster.

Interesting how it affects different Ipad 1s. It must also be affected by our different setups, available memory (I do have 64 GB), etc. I can only see things improve. I'm happy with most of the changes, not all, but speed doesn't seem to affect mine. I will say that the way I had to restore my apps pared them down considerably as I thought before checking them off in Itunes and especially when I had to reinstall 22 it "couldn"t find" (but did get all content back with them). I am sure that helped but I do still have a lot of apps and a lot of content.

I was just surprised to find Photostream backed up my raw photo files to my PC, appropriate folder. I wasn't sure. Its not the most efficient for transfer but it does back up and I can drag my raw files into a folder on my PC and import to Lightroom where they are processed as raw files. One more thing I was skeptical about. I've turned it on and off several times, really want the ability to delete separate files, but.....

My next guess is if the appdevelopers need to update their apps... would this cause the lagginess? I would imagine so but the overall general functioning of the device its self is very laggy, which it never was prior. If Apple does not support downgrading to a previous version of iOS, then I feel somewhat stuck between a rock and a hard place since I can only use certain functions somewhat normally. Response time for all my games are very slow, email is slow, internet is not too bad....

I would have scarified 2 hoursof battery time for more memory so my device would support future software updates….. I think this is not something to be overlooked if multiple people are experiencing the same issues.
