iOS5 & iPad 1 - BIG Decrease in performance

Ever since I upgraded to the new iOS has anyone experienced a big drop in performance on their iPad 1? I have been experiencing big delays in response time from when I type until the keys actually process, delays in gestures, browser delays, email is slow, when apps are running they are very slow and barely usable. It's almost like I have dial-up where a little bit will run at a time. I have reinstalled the iOS and still get the same issues. The thing is barley usable which is a shame given all the new features. It's the "best operating system" that I can't use....... I guess I will need to downgrade back to 4. If you are experiencing issues please let me know or respond here so we can let them know more about it.

MAJOR UPDATE: Okay, hopefully this will be of some help to people. I was using iCloud right from the start on my iPad 1, and I had poor performance right out of the gate. Someone, either on this thread or another (I can't remember which, and can't scroll back to check) suggested that turning off iCloud for everything except Documents and Data brought the performance back up to about 95% of what it was before.

Well... Just for kicks and giggles, I thought I'd try turning off iCloud completely, just to see what it would do. Turning all those other items off had done nothing for me, so I turned off Documents and Data as well. As soon as I did, performance returned completely to normal. Literally. Not even a reboot. Ran Angry Birds, and had no problems at all, yet three minutes earlier, Angry Birds crashed continually.

I tested all my other apps that we're having problems: safari, numbers, pages, omni outliner, omni focus, etc. all of them are performing normally now.

So I turned iCloud back on for Documents and Data, and everything is okay now. This is actually back to mostly usable. I'm finding, as I'm typing this, that the occasional mistyped word goes through, but everything else is pretty much okay. I can definitely live with this until Apple can really narrow down the problem and release a fix.

I really hope this solves it for someone else, too!

I am planning to upgrade to 3 but not 2. My 1 is as fast as before if not a bit faster. i'm actually a happy camper other than losing my favorite blog reader, Blogshelf, but it will be back. My Imessaging is working correctly, I found Photostream COULD be useful, and I really like the improvements in Safari. I also understand other's unhappiness. Problems with 1 are not consistent.

Just to clarify a point up there about the iPad being a huge investment - for me it was a huge investment. I use it as an almost if not entirely laptop replacement machine. Not just because it was extremely expensive for a gadget, but because it performs well. I study with it (or did at least), PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, classroom notes, interactive educational apps (I'm a biochem major) and the iPad turned my two heavy backpacks into 1 minimal notebook.

And as an investment I'd like to see this thing work good. Not just for 1 year and then I need to buy another one, but like my MacBook that after 3 years is still being regularly updated and improved with no drastic difference in features with newer machines. I still got lion and all the updates that came with it. If this is the end of iPad 1 life cycle - this will be my biggest disappointment to date with apple. I hope they read this board and fix this problem. That's why I choose them over any other company, but as of now I'm out of warranty and out of luck.

It was a huge investment for many and for me, I decided to not upgrade my aging Macbook to get the 1st generation iPad. When I realized that it is a lot more sluggish since the last major update, I was very disappointed. I was to get the new iPad 3 when it comes out but considering that Apple cannot assure on par performance for their tablet for more than a year, I might look up what Google is doing with their products.

Wonder why iPad sales went down.

Got the sam epropblems as teh ones listed above. Just wanted to add myself to teh list of people having this crap. Similar to all of you, a reset doesn't work, and 5.0.1 doesn't do anything either. Guess I'm not going for the next apple product afterall. Looks like Apple decided now that they got people hooked they can now throw quality into teh wind. Steve would turn over in his grave bless him...

As for updating apps, I think Apple is the only one NOT updating apps for iOS5... ANyway, for teh moment my iPad is useless. Luckily for me I stil lhave a fabulous never failing Android tablet. Maybe not as slick, but at leats it WORKS

Me too. Enough ranting. I have Ipad one since May 2010 and push it much more than any of my friends actually creating content and using it to access, retain and organize a lot of content. Yes, I crash but would I give it up--not in a heartbeat. It has changed how I use and interact with a computer for one thing.

I have friends with 3gs phones, 4 and 4S phones, Ipad ones and 2. Most have no issues at all with their devices. Many of us are Windows/PC people still. I don't even have an Iphone but will in May when contract is up. I have a Touch (and an older Ipod Classic and Nano) and my Ipad one and will upgrade to Ipad 3. Personally I don't want new firmware to have to be backwards compatible with everything in order to work with one when improvements make more possible in newer devices. I'm willing to cut back on options to use earlier devices so new devices can move on. I can't use my Windows 3.1 computer with the programs I own now--why would I expect early IOS devices to continue to work with new firmware in all cases.

My rant over LOL. I'm no Apple Fangirl but I do know my Ipad 1 works 99% of the time but I don't expect it to always work with future firmware nor work with every app. Ask my friend with a frozen Asus Transformer with no bricks and mortar support or even a forum like this. He saved $100-he's sorry now.

If you're not having any problems with your ipad 1, then why join the thread in the first place? This is a thread titled "big decrease in performance." Most of us here were and are currenly unhappy with the situation of a two year old device made for surfing the net, being mostly unusable.

For those of you with "an ipad 1 working fine," well, good for you.

You did not read my post and I'm not going to argue with you. I do NOT consider this a ploy by Apple (can we say the same about any of the Android tablets or phones--of course-- see my friend with the pretty new Asus Transformer) but I do understand some people are having issues because of IOS 5. There are ways to have some of its benefits with the first generation Ipad and be aware that you will have to make some compromises. Others are trying to help them be happy with their Ipad.

There isn't another tablet with the benefits and apps of the Ipad out there. There are also a myriad of users loving their Ipads, one and two. There are always some unhappy users with any digital device--I'm a long time photographer. Think I don't know about users thinking a manufacturer is giving it to them with new firmware upgrades, etc.????? Or ask MS users abut their experiences with Windows. OR ask my husband about his experience with Palm and then HP LOL.
