Restore backup from snapshot folder?

Hi

I've upgraded my IOS to the IOS5 after buying a new Mac and plug the iphone for the first time in it. For some reason I've lost ALL my APPS ( but the iPhone kept my photos, messages and contacts ). In a attempt to recover the Apps I've restored the Iphone. It didn't work and worse: created a new backup on my computer replacing the old one.
So I've entered in the MobileSync/Backup folder and found my old backup. But for some reason it is different from the others: It contains a file inside called Status.plist and a folder called Snapshot ( this folder has 800mb so I guess this is the old backup as some files inside are my photos without extensions).

Is there a way to recover this backup? I've tried deleting all the new backup folders just leaving the old one and the Itunes dont let me restore it from backup ( the option doesnt even exist)

Please, this is urgent.
Thanks

Thiago

Hello all,

I'm very interesting in that issue. Just before a genius replacement, I made a backup of my iPhone 5 on my Windows XP.

When I connect the new iPhone and after having updated, I tried to restore my backup... But Itunes didn't pop up my previous backup.

So I browse to the backup path, I find a folder (with lots of digit) with inside a file (Status.plist) and a Snapshot folder (7GB weight).

Why does Itune can't use this folder to restore my iPhone?

How can I fix this folder and restore all my data (I backuped up with lot of attention).

If this folder is bricked, how can I get back my picture (at least) store in the long digit file (without extension)

Thanks for you help,

Create a new backup of the phone (even though its without the data).

Copy all the content inside the "snapshot" folder that you have with your data in, to the folder you created the new backup (dont delete the existing files).

Download a program called "iphone backup extractor" (free version for now).

Point it to the modified backup folder we created.

It should see the contacts / notes / sms messages etc.. that you can extract to a CSV file (excel).

The demo only lets you do 3 records but it will let you test it. The software cost £18 in the UK which was worth it to get my data.back.

Hey, same thing here...

What I did do on this folder was the following:

- i made a copy of the directory from users\user\library\itunes\mobile backups\xxxxxx - where xxxxxx is the serial number of your iphone

- I dragged the contents of the snapshot folder (5000+) files into iPhoto. I now have a copy of the photos in a safe place. (THERE IS A DOWNSIDE - it copies everything into iphoto that looks like a photo). I had the Willow app that showed homes for sale with photos, now i have random photos of kitchen in my iphoto library. I dont see text messages in there, just the items that are photos.

There are some large files that snapshot folder, I am assuming those are my videos. (I opened a 10MB file with a text editor and at the end of the garbage i saw - mdtacom.apple.quicktime.make

I even tried to move this folder under the other folder directory:

users\user\library\application support\mobliesynch\backup - the file structure is different. I opened info.plist with an app called OmniOutliner (was associated by default) and it tells you more information. What i see know when i try to do a restore is "Unknown" with a date of 12/31/00 7PM. When I try to use that one, i get another error - itunes could not restore the iPhone "Unknown" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iphone that is being restored.

This is where i am now....I'll post more if I find anything.

I have the same situation, Im still unsure about retreaving any information from the "Snapshot" folder, but if you use a file manager program you can put the files in size order.

Files above say 5mb will be videos, files less will be images. Note that some of the smaller files are thumbnails of the full size imges.

If you copy all off the pictures to a folder, you can use a DOS script to rename the files ie ren *.* *.jpg

I'll explain more once ive done it should you wish. Im still trying to see if I can recover the snapshot folder to an iphone.

Hello SteveMazg,

Thanks for your help. I go on and I try to send all the file in iPhoto and it automatically recognize picture that I can export properly. Now I try to sync the photo directly to the Camera roll (without having an album via iPhoto and without loosing geoloc, exif information).

I do the same things in VLC (maybe I will try with iMovie) and I save the video file that can be play.

I don't even know why this Snapshot folder is here and why our backup didn't work. I open a case with Apple and they told me that Itunes can't create this kind of folder... When I asked about the status.plist... they ask for a supervisor 😉... I've a meeting in a genius bar next week...

wait and see...
