Is anyone else having a problem with the iPhone 4s Battery Life? My 1 year old Iphone 4, which I gave to my wife, is holding a charge better and she has been using it far more than I've been using my 4s

My wife preordered a white iPhone 4s for our anniversary and even though it is preloaded with the ios 5, i am a little disappointed. The battery doesn't seem to hold a charge well at all. I have had every other iphone except the 3gs and have never had such a poor battery life. I owned the iPhone 4 for a year, and already know all the tricks to hold on to battery life, I have adopted the habit of closing out any apps that weren't being used, my mail push notifications are set for hourly, wifi and bluetooth are turned off when they aren't needed. I also stay away from any car chargers, use only the apple brand supplied cables, and only charge when the phone is dead. I only would sync when the phone was about to die as well.

When I saw how fast I was burning through the battery, I turned off Siri, which is kind of the purpose of the new iPhone, and turned off the backing up to iCloud. I barely used my phone today and the battery kept ticking down. My wife, who has been stuck with an iPhone 3g for years, has been fascinated with my old iPhone 4 and has been browsing and playing games and her battery has been holding a better charge than my new phone. I even tried turning the phone off for an hour when it was at 18% and when I turned it back on, it was at 15%. My iPhone 2, which is only being used as a touch iPod now, still has better standby time than a brand new iPhone 4s.

To be honest, I am usually a heavy phone user. Throughout the day I will make and receive at least 50 calls, I browse and check websites daily and watch videos sometimes during my downtime. But this weekend, I haven't even had the chance to put this phone through the same abuse my other 3 iPhones have had to endure.

I just want to know if anyone else has this problem, or if I should just return this one.

Whatever, it says "up to 200 hours". We all say it lasts LESS THAN A DAY! Don't whip empty marketing data around, rather try to help people with a real problem.

I suggest trying to disable everything you don't need and it even remotely looks like it can drain battery in the beackground. Also, try resetting the Network to factory defaults in Settings>General>Reset>Network. I was able to mitigate my power drain using both metods. Now it is *REASONABLE* although my iPhone 4 still drains way faster than it did under iOS 4.x.

Shame, I say, that Apple did such a poor job of balancing the power consumption in iOS 5.

For what it's worth, there is an interesting trend appearing in several threads concerning rapid battery drain with new phones running iOS 5 and other phones upgraded to iOS 5.

The culprit appears to be the facebook app. Try deleting it and see if the problem clears up. There are a number of people reporting that removing the facebook app has fixed the problem.

One person in particular detailed the steps he took to troubleshoot, including wiping the phone and setting it up fresh with no apps installed at all. Testing for a full day, battery life was "normal". After installing the facebook app, battery life began to plummet. Something about the way it polls for updates is causing a problem under iOS 5. I can't say I'm surprised. I'm no fan of facebook. I haven't had any problems myself since updating, but then, I killed my facebook account and deleted the app when they announced the last batch of changes, so it wasn't on my phone when I upgraded to iOS 5.

Try it.

You don't have to remove it, just either don't launch it or make sure you kill it (hold down the home button, then hold down an app and hit the "X" button at the corner of the Facebook app icon) when you're done using it.

Part of what I've read indicates that simply killing it won't do the trick. The problem appears to be tied to the way it attempts to use notifications, even if notifications is turned off for the app. Logging out of the app may solve the problem, but killing the app in the recent programs list still doesn't stop it from checking for notifications in the background.

Mind you, this is just what I've gleaned from others, some of who went to a fair bit of trouble to pinpoint their problem.

I would try to test it myself, but I refuse to use facebook. 😎

THIS WORKS!

I upgraded and restored from backup and have tried various fixes etc that work for a bit and then stop working....

Yesterday I did this SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS

DO NOT## erase all content and settings DO NOT I repeat erase all content and settings

RESET ALL SETTINGS will erase your wifi settings as well as any personalization that you have made in settings (font size sound alarm settings wallpapers etc and reset them all to the default..... it took me all of 15 minutes to do and reset everything to my preferred settings and my battery is what I expect it to be (ie just like my ip4 did before the upgrade).

I did not disable ANYTHING other than bluetooth-- icloud is on siri is on location services is on everything is on. AND THE PHONE DOESN'T GET HOT

enjoy your iphones folks

I'm having the same problem. I'm using the 4s the same way I used my 4 on iOS5. Same settings, notification, location servicers and I'm on WIFI at work and at home. But now by the end of the day my 4s is on 10% battery left. The only difference in my usage should be using Siri a few times a day and in my opinion that should not be effecting the battery that much.

When you kill the app, it's no longer running, so it can't do anything.

Now I suppose it could set up something incorrectly with the notification manager, but killing the app with the "X" is no different than quitting a Mac OS X application.

Itook my iPhone 4s off the charger last night around 10pm it was at 97% and when I woke up it at 6am it was at 1%. That is roughly 10% per hour on standby sitting on my night stand. Does anyone have any ideas I have wifi on but not bluetooth this is weird seeing as how I have done this same thing on this same phone and have not seen this drastic of a reduction.

This is not true. If notifications are enabled, it still ties into the totification center and will monitor for new messages, just like push mail does. This is why so many people with problems have found that turning off push e-mail helps (often, this indicates a problem with their exchange system or the account on the phone).

From studying the issue, the battery seems to drain faster when the phone is not actively being used. My 4S used to lose 20-25% overnight while I was asleep whereas my iPhone 4 hardly lost any charge. This led me to conclude a background process that gets suspended during active use is what is draining the battery. Push notifications are not so resource intensive but polling a server is. Looking around, I saw this:

Settings/Store and turned off NYTimes "Automatically download new content when on Wi-Fi" . Uncheck it.

I theorize that either the NYT is doing polling and/or they update their content so frequently that the phone is constantly fetching data.

I have not turned off anything else like Siri, Location Services etc.

Since then, I lose 4-5% overnight and can go 1.5 days before needing to recharge.

Incidentally, I tried calibrating the battery by draining it and then charging to 100%. No effect for me.

Anyway, this is what worked for me. Hope it does for you as well.
