Is anyone else having a problem with the iPhone 4s Battery Life? My 1 year old Iphone 4, which I gave to my wife, is holding a charge better and she has been using it far more than I've been using my 4s

My wife preordered a white iPhone 4s for our anniversary and even though it is preloaded with the ios 5, i am a little disappointed. The battery doesn't seem to hold a charge well at all. I have had every other iphone except the 3gs and have never had such a poor battery life. I owned the iPhone 4 for a year, and already know all the tricks to hold on to battery life, I have adopted the habit of closing out any apps that weren't being used, my mail push notifications are set for hourly, wifi and bluetooth are turned off when they aren't needed. I also stay away from any car chargers, use only the apple brand supplied cables, and only charge when the phone is dead. I only would sync when the phone was about to die as well.

When I saw how fast I was burning through the battery, I turned off Siri, which is kind of the purpose of the new iPhone, and turned off the backing up to iCloud. I barely used my phone today and the battery kept ticking down. My wife, who has been stuck with an iPhone 3g for years, has been fascinated with my old iPhone 4 and has been browsing and playing games and her battery has been holding a better charge than my new phone. I even tried turning the phone off for an hour when it was at 18% and when I turned it back on, it was at 15%. My iPhone 2, which is only being used as a touch iPod now, still has better standby time than a brand new iPhone 4s.

To be honest, I am usually a heavy phone user. Throughout the day I will make and receive at least 50 calls, I browse and check websites daily and watch videos sometimes during my downtime. But this weekend, I haven't even had the chance to put this phone through the same abuse my other 3 iPhones have had to endure.

I just want to know if anyone else has this problem, or if I should just return this one.

Hi, I have to be honest and say that I'm quite impressed with the battery life on my new iPhone 4S considering the sheer and vast multitude of things that's going on in this tiny hand held computer and all happening in an overall device that's so incredibly super slim. I'm not trying to defend Apple and I'm usually the first to complain if I have a problem with my iPhone, which I currently do with the Personal Hotspot losing it's WiFi connection at different times, and also likewise would be the first to give credit where credit is due.

There are a lot of really useful suggestions from other iPhone users replying to this thread, all of which may help benefit your iPhone's battery performance in some small way. However in reality it has to be accepted that, for starters, with the 4S's inclusion of not just a newer more powerful processor, but 'two of them' as the dual core is certainly going to require more power. Add to that all the new additional feature's and additional processes required for those multitude of feature and you may start to realise that this little hand held computer/smart phone that's light years ahead of all others on market in terms of features, presentation, UI, build quality and timeless design for something that's un-realistically thin - it doesn't seem possible.

I can imagine Apple having the dilemma when they first created the iPhone, wether to have the iPhone much more chunky like a brick, with battery power to last for days! Or to produce one of the sexiest and timeless smart phones in existence and then give it's users the choice of either; having a piece art in their hands that's both so thin they'll hardy notice it in their pockets and with incredible features, but with regular charge intervals (a kind of laws of physics thing).. OR still having an incredible phone/computer but adding a battery pack case to extend the battery life (and the size of the phone) ... but your not committed to the bulk of having extra power if you change your mind as one can exclude the case - with a bulkier phone at manufacture, your committed and done-for.

Understandably there maybe some genuine owners that may be unfortunate enough to inherit the odd bad battery, in which case Apple would replace if genuine. It's certainly worth testing an iPhone 4S strongly believed to have battery problems against another iPhone 4S to be completely fair, although admittedly it's hard for many to access a second iPhone 4S for this purpose. But you have to take on board and bare in mind like another person pointed out in one of the reply posts here, that it is documented that the iPhone 4S uses (I think it stated) 33% more power in standby? And don't forget the iPad 2 equivalent higher power draining A5 dual core's and furthermore only being powered by a tiny phone's battery and not the such of a much larger battery as in the iPad 2.

I hope that may have been of some little help/enlightenment and hope I didn't cover too much. Don't get me wrong, if I could have power to last at least three times longer BUT in the same slim and timeless design size iPhone, then I'll. E queuing-up for that. Meanwhile I'm probably myself going to invest in a battery cradle for my iPhone 4S, as these sit comfortable hidden away in a pocket leaving you to slide-out and still use the slim iPhone 4S in one's hand (check out the Mili Power Pack 4/4S 3000mAh which appears to have a very generous power capacity for roughly 1 & 1/2 charges).

Right! I'm off as I'm exhausted from typing this all from my iPhone 4S and its onscreen keyboard (and thats a challenge in itself) and my battery has dropped by a third!!! (mind you I'm not the fastest at typing).

FOUND A SOLUTION!!

All the praise is fine, Diesel, unless your phone won't last 5 hours on a charge. And that was the state with

my first 2.

But I've found that by shutting off notification center, turn off location for Siri and weather, and turn off tilt to activate Siri that I'm now looking at 2 days of use instead of 4 hours!! Odd thing is I still get notification alerts from calendar, text, and reminders.

I'll certainly give some of those suggestions a try, but I may be tempted to re-enable notification centre after testing as I like that feature too much even though I never seem to get real genuine instant push for email accounts.

I've turned off the 'Settings>Location Services>System Services>Setting Time Zone because someone was right when they pointed out that the GPS for this setting appears always to be 'on', but is unknown to the user because the Status Icon Bar indicator is set off by default and switching it on shows the purple arrow head active on the status. I honestly don't know though if this indicates that the GPS for this setting is constantly on, or if it is checking time location say every hour or so and is just showing a GPS indicator merely indicating this setting is active (in which case it should just flash on every hourly or so check).

I believe the problem is actually very simple one. The processor and battery. The dual core processor is simply too power hungry for the battery to support a moderate to heavy user for 8 hours. Apple put in practically same sized battery as the iphone 4.

I think the A5 is spinning its wheels when it is being used. It needs to be throttled down further.

Come on Apple, I am a long standing user and disciple of all things Apple. You have always stood apart from 'the rest' by ensuring the standards set are high both in design and software and that when a product is released it is almost perfect. But what is happening with the iPhone. First Antenaegate, now Batterygate. It seems to me that you are looking over you shoulder at the oppositions strategy and releasing it before it is ready, just so they cannot steal your thunder. All those years of me proclaiming to all and everyone that Apple was the only way to go is beginning to produce a lot of laughing up sleeves. If it aint right dont release it. In the meantime, We have all spent a lot of money on this product and expect it to be fixed 100% very soon.

I have an iPhone 4 and had massive battery drain problems after updating to ios5. After lots of reading and fiddling I managed to get the drain down to except able levels. The problem now is since the update to 5.01 the problem is back and no matter what I do it's not getting any better. Apple sort this out you have ruined a fantastic phone.

First of all I must admit I personally don't appear to be having anything like the battery issues that most people on here seem to be having. My battery drain doesnt appear to be too bad at all, and with turning off only a few settings that I don't really miss such as time-zone etc. However, I must also admit that despite this, I have been disappointed with being quite frankly 'mislead' by Apple as I am in now way receiving the battery life I was promised and or this they should be ashamed.

I had the 3GS and like many of you have said, I believe I had better battery life on that than I do on my current 4S. I also believe that too many of you are both making excuses for Apple and accepting too many, quite frankly shocking 'fixes' for the problems that we as premium paying customers are being left with. Turn off the Notification Center, Turn off Siri - don't forget these are probably the only 2 real diferences that mark the 4 and 4S.

After reading recent articles on the ios 5.1 update, I am scared to sync my phone and update for fear of catching this problem that has affected so many of you and it just shouldnt be like this. Apple should take a step back and take a real look at what they are doing and sort out this problem asap before they alienate the true and die hard fans that have put them where they are today.

I'm with you. My battery life is excellent and now I'm afaid to download the update. Sticking with what I have for a while. I did download BatteryDoctor Pro the other day and it is excellent. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

You also get a BatteryDoctor Pro for your ipad when you get the iphone version. This app works great. I just close all apps, open BDP and then plug my phone in the charger. BDP does the rest and signals you when it time to unplug charger. It uses trickle charge to finish off the full charge.

If you continue to have iPhone Battery Problems after iOS 5.0.1 update please perform the following:

  1. First make sure that you backup you device in iTunes with Encryption on.
  2. Turn off any un-necessary network services such as WiFi and Blue Tooth.
  3. Make sure that you are in fact running iOS 5.0.1 by checking in General>About. It should read 5.0.1 (XXX)
  4. Perform a "Hard Reset" on the device.
  5. Do a reset by selecting Selecting Settings>General>Reset.
  6. Setup as a new phone, all your email and APPS will still be there.
  7. Use the device and let the battery drain down, under 10%.
  8. Do a full recharge using the power adaptor. (Make sure all the connections are secure.)

If the problem persist only after doing all the steps above:

  1. Backup and Encrypt your device in iTunes.
  2. Do a factory reset on the device.
  3. Perform the Update on the Device.
  4. Perform a Restore of the Backup.

Users of first generation iPads have extensive improvement by do the following:

Selecting Settings>General>Reset.

** Depending on the device and applications installed your results will vary. Performing all of steps may not be necessary for every user. If however you hit a road block performing all the steps has proven to work.

Good luck there are a couple of threads related to this.

For users you can also contact APPLE But the above mix of solutions has worked now for many, dependent on their install, device and provider.
