Error enabling photo stream "iphoto was unable to connect to Photo Stream"

Whenever I try to enable Photo Stream, it times out after awhile, and I get the following error: "iPhoto was unable to connect to Photo Stream." (see below [1]). I "tcpdump" shows that the computer is trying to open connections to akamai (unrelated?) but not apple. I am using iPhoto 9.2 build 626.

There is one oddity in this scenario : I have one iCloud account that I am trying to use between three computers. I was able to register iPhoto on my mac book pro, but it is failing on my second.

thanks in advance,

-tom

I have been tearing my hair out for months trying to get photo stream to work on my iMac. It works on my iPhone, iPad and MBP but not on my iMac. Your thought on it being Keychain related was spot on.

I reset my default keychain and after verifying my icloud account via email and enabling photo stream in iPhoto everything worked just fine. Thanks for the thoughtful information. This is the solution for an account on an iMac that does not allow iPhoto to connect to the photo stream. WooHoo!

Dear Mike,

i run a ssd & hdd in my MBP2009 together and have the /Library linked on the ssd for performance reasons.

Before i patched my Photostreamagent.sb successfully after reading your post and everything worked for the photostream fine again.

Now the iPhoto 9.3 update came und i updated it and i patched the photostreamagent.sb again, but this trick is now no more working ... in the system.log i have these PhotoStreamAgent(7256) deny file-write-create messages again ...

Any hint or clue, how to get photostream working after the 9.3 update again?

Cheers from Germany,

Chris.

Hey peeps!

if you are still having difficulties with the 9.3 photostream activation there are a couple of different steps you can take

#0) Create Test account as admin in system preferences users&groups

#1) log into a guest or test(admin) account

if able to activate photostream, log back into main user

if not able, system wide errors are occurring so more troubleshooting will need to take place

option yes steps :make sure iphoto is quit, then go into the samefolder as before to trash ilifemediassets folder ^^^^directory posted above

after trashing the folder go to ~/library/preferences : trash com.apple.iphoto.plist (only this one), next you will eject your secondary harddrive and shut down the computer

turn computer back on, open iphoto, (yes with the external disconnected) once iphoto loads up quit the application from the menubar.

plug in external drive (give it a moment to recognize) after hold the option button on your keyboard, while holding option click on iphoto, keep holding down option until you get the option to select the library on the external library

attempt to reestablish connection with photostream

#if you got a no for the above result based scenario question

start computer in safe mode, hold shift at startup

uninstall and re-install iphoto using the App store if your on lion

I hope this is atleast helpful, and believe me I know the second option doesn't sound fun but most of the time it takes care of the issue as welll. Make sure you backup all your items always. Good luck have fun!

FWIW I fixed mine when I realised I'd probably downloaded iPhoto using an AppleID from the App Store but logged into iCloud with a different AppleID. I deleted iPhoto and it's related files (but not the iPhoto Library) using CleanApp, entered the App Store with my usual AppleID and downloaded iPhoto again. Once the App Store, the downloaded iPhoto and iCloud logins were the same iPhoto Stream worked again.
