iOS5 slow and unstable on iPhone 4

It feels like iOS 4 on the 3G all over again, but after installing iOS5 on my iPhone 4 (Verizon) on Friday I've definitely noticed slowdowns in responsiveness and some application hangs. For example, the camera app hung several times and the Netflix app would often get stuck on buffering a new video until closed and re-opened. These all happened multiple times.

Oh well, time for the 4S I guess ;-)

I had this problem and I disabled the Notification Center for calendars and that fixed it. I can reproduce the problem simply by re-enabling the Notification Center for calendars.

Other symptoms of the problem include excessively hot iPhone and poor battery life.

I'm syncing with 3 calendars; one with Gmail, one with Tripit and one through ActiveSync. I haven't tried disabling them one at a time to see if it's a specific number of calendars or a specific provider that is the problem.

Hey everyone, was the same for me until 2days ago. However I booked an appointment at a genius bar at the Sydney apple store and 20minutes later walked out a happy man. The first question staff asked was "did I download the iOS5 over wifi?" and I replied with a "yes!". She explained that for some reason they found that downloading over wifi corrupts some of the files and this is what causes the pain we've all been experiencing. Before going to apple I scoured the web for answers, but all suggestions about turning everything off was useless but restoring my iPhone 4 with a stable iOS5 from the Apple store fixed all of the above we've been complaining about! So solution go to your nearest apple store and get them to restore your device with the stable OS they have! A new restore atleast from the genius bar solved all battery, lag, apps shutting down etc etc problems! If you do go to the apple store make sure you back everything up before, even if you don't they'll offer to back-up, up to 5gb in the cloud, but this might not be enough for all. Make sure you advise you're friends who havent taken the leap yet to download via cable and NOT wi-fi!! Hope this solves everyone's woes like it did mine; good luck!

i noticed a couple days ago some apps (games, facebook, etc.) were hanging and stuttering on my iPhone 4. it had been a week or so since i'd upgraded to iOS 5. i also noticed my Notification Center pulldown was spazing out (for lack of a better term) in the calendars section. i have three that sync with the cloud. i disabled my calendars in the Notification Center and that has seemed to do the trick. my games seem fine again. hope that helps

Hi, I am facing the same problem on my iphone 4.

Suddenly after ending a call my phone would be showing the locked sign on the top bar but would actually be unlocked. And also some other probs like the phone getting stuck or apps crashing etc.

I downloaded the IOS 5 using my internet USB stick.

Do you think it would have the same problem of some files being corrupt while downloading??

Awaiting you reply.

Many Thanks

Rahul

Disabling the calendar from Notification did the trick for me. Now the response times are much-much better... Not sure about the battery life though. Would update after a day of tracking it. Currently, it was dropping @1% per 2-3 mins! Since I updated my iPhone4 with iOS5 (yesterday evening) I've ended up with drained battery twice!! As per the news reports iOS 5.0.1 has been released to developer community and so we can soon expect it to be available generally!

I downloaded IOS 5 over hard line and didn't use WiFi and I'm still having problems with freezing at all different times. Not any one certain app etc. Unfortunately I really need my calendar notifications so I'm hamstrung without it. At first theI OS5 worked really great. but I noticed that it started with slowing down and progressively getting worse. I backed up and did a restore which worked for a while but now I'm back to the same O same O. Hopefully the update that comes out here in a week or so will fix this.

I've been having the same problem. Updated with a hard wire and have yet to disable calendar notifications as I kind of need those for daily meetings and well organizing life. I drained the battery a few times now and so far nothing has changed. I'm most upset about the home screen lagging as I press the home button and it takes about 2-3 seconds to pop up. I'll be trying what you all have suggested and I beleive going to the source and Apple Store to get their hard wire ios5 would work well. I'd hope.
