IOS5 sms alert/ tone issue

I am facing the same issue. Resetting network settings temporarily fixes it but obviously clears all the saved wifi networks (very annoying). Visited apple store but they have no better solution.

Hope to get a permanent fix soon... Apple?!

i have the same issue too on my iphone 4 ios 5.0.1 , i thought its a HW issue with my vibrator !!
serously i started hating my iphone now .

BTW , i think by resitting the network config tone sounds fine now .

as suggested, changed the tones in setting a couple of times and then reset the iPhone by holding the home button and pressing the power button. After the iPhone rebooted, the problem was gone. seems as a classic example of trial and error, not sure till date what caused the issue and what sorted it out... but for the time being i am happy

Guys the issue is with the notifications setting "View in Lock Screen"...

Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> View in Lock Screen

- If you turn this setting "OFF" the alert doubling stops permenantly.

Its not a great solution as we cannot view our message in lock screen when we receive it. But none the less, the best solution so far. 🙂

Here are the facts I've gathered relating this issue:

1 - "View in Lock Screen" = OFF, stops the ring overlapping

2 - Rebooting solves the issue for a few hours

3 - I could not reproduce this issue on a 3GS nor 4 so I guess it's a multi-core (A5) related issue of the 4S. Anyone complaining got something other than a 4S ?

i didnt want to turn off the lock screen notifications. this is what i did:

made a custom tone with first 2 seconds blank (silence) using a ringtone maker software.

this is just a worksround solution but helps u keep the notifications in the lock screen.

I also have a 3GS running IOS5 with the same problem - at least 3 if not 6 jitters in 1 alert. It's embarassing - everyone just turns around and stares at me if I'm in the office or in public. I feel ashamed and judged every time my stupid little iPhone freaks-out like this.

It's really annoying, it is the same for any app alerts too. And also if you are in the same message box, it gives the normal bing sound and then starts off with the irritating stammering tone. Apple bring the fix please

I think its better to raise this issue to media..for India NDTV Gadget Guru, who often grabs attention of viewers by hifi gadgets..let him discuss about the problem ! If apple is good in customer service, they should send message to all iphone owners that 'this problem will be solved before so and so date' Apple's phone is costly and atlast it is loosing market for a cheaper issue !

Here's another take on this problem.

Firstly, thanks to all who suggested to turn off the "view in lock screen". This definitely works to remove that overlapping SMS tone. But you'd end upsacrificing the lock screen notifications. Bummer...

There is another anomaly I noticed when I'm in a SMS chat thread itself in which if I am plagued by the overlapping/stammering alert, receiving an SMS would sound like a convoluted sound of the incoming ballon sound mixed with the general SMS alert sound. I got around this problem temporarily by the following method (with the view in lockscreen already turned on):

1 - putting my iphone into standby mode (blank screen).

2 - ask a friend (or use my "other" phone) to send an SMS to my iphone

3 - when the notification appears on the lock screen. slide the "Slide to reply" (or swiping the small SMS icon as it appears also works) to directly go to the SMS app itself.

4 - thereafter, there won't be anymore overlapping/stammering SMS alerts, nor would the SMS alert tone convolute with the polite bubble sound (within the SMS-thread) while inside the SMS app anymore.

Logic-wise, its like... if you have the "View in lock screen" activated for the SMS notification, then it must fulfill its mission in life from the lockscreen to bring you directly to the SMS app. Otherwise, the stammer problem would be lingering around somewhere in the background like a nagging ghost until you actually activate step 3 above and clear its notification buffer/queue.

... but alas, if you'd enter the SMS app via the main screen to check on unread SMSes, then the stammering problem would return (until its accessed via the Lockscreen's "Slide to reply" method).

So a more permanent fix (until the next iOS upgrade, hopefully) would still be to disable the "view in lock screen" toggle. And whether the SMS app is tagged inside the notification Center or not, or alert style, or badge or preview.... doesn't seem to make any difference.

The culprit here is exclusively the "view in lock screen" toggle.

And this seems to be a iPhone4/5.0.1 problem (have verified this with 2 separate iPhone4/5.0.1 on different carriers. The problem is consistent and repeatable). I tried to replicate the above on a 3GS/5.0.1 and there were no such problems.

Maybe someone can try this with a 4S/5.0.1 and share their findings as well.

Hope this helps, and hope someone from Apple is taking notice here so that it helps them replicate the problem and hopefully fix it in the next iOS release.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

I think it's only with the iPhone 4 updated to ios5. I have tested it on an iPhone 4 with company installed ios5 and 3GS with company installed iOS5 and they don't seem to have this issue.

Okay the bad news is that I just updated 4/5.1 and the problem still exists.

Can someone pleae tell that anyone at apple is reading this or we are just talking to each other?

There are many issues that need to be resolved. My iPhone has got this sms tone issue and a Yellow tinted display as well. Many users have this issue. And folks at apple store say that many customers have complained about this but its not a defect and on comparing the screens of two different iPhones u can clearly see that its a huge defect.

Please Apple , if you accidently see this post then do something.

I have Iphone 3gs with iOS 5 already. I just noticed now that when I am in the sms thread and the same person replies back, the message alert is just like an incoming balloon sound(as described by MugenFoo in one of his reply above) not the default sms alert sound that I set in the Sounds option.

Is this normal?

Updating iOS to 5.1.1 fixed this problem. I have been having this problem since iOS 5 till iOS 5.1.

Since I done a update to the latest iOS a week ago, I am not having this issue.

Please note I did a full restore and not an OTA

i am just fed of this. Worte so many emails to apple and called up their support but apple support areof no help. I am very much disappointed with Apple
