Iphone 4S / iOS5 - Battery drain / issues - An idea Ihaven't seen anywhere yet (17th October 2011)....

As with many iPhone 4S adopters, I have noticed that mybattery is under performing compared to my iPhone 4 (on iOS4, granted). The issue seems to be standby, more than usage. In standby my iPhone 4 only dropped1% battery every 2-3 hours. Now I am dropping 1-2% every hour.

I have done ALL the tricks I have read on these forums (listed below)

However, just now, I received a "Badge" style notificationon my home screen from an app which is NOT IN MY "NOTIFICTAION CENTRE"LIST. It transpires that some of the apps not in the list can still push notifications in the old style. Annoyingly, these are apps which, on my old iPhone 4, I had all notifications turned off!! The move the iPhone 4S/iOS5 has turned them on!

I have gone through them switching everything off. I willsee what happens with that

Could this be a battery drain that people are missing? I amnot hugely technical with this kind of stuff, more a process of eliminationtype guy!

The tricks I HAVE employed:

Set up phone as new (lost all my game saves, dammit!)

Turned off locations services to all but those apps that need it (one or two)

Turned off all unnecessary items in notification centre

Bluetooth OFF

Wifi ON (I am usually at home or work; wifi is LESS of adrain than 3G)

Ping OFF in restrictions

Itunes OFF in restrictions

Hidden location services such as time zone locator OFF

iCloud deleted

No email on phone.

Reset network settings

Lowered brightness

key sounds OFF

(Possibly others....I have spent some time on this!)

P.S. I have not run a full battery cycle yet, in process, and will report back with results

P.P.S ...Apple..... PATCH iOS5 ASAP! (assuming this will solve it!) Surely there cannot be THAT many defective iPhone 4S batteries out there?!

Since I don't have unlimited data on my mobile plan and would rather rely on WiFi for internet, I had my mobile data blocked by my provider so I wouldn't get shocked by my bill. I have Cellular Data off on my iPhone but maybe the battery drain is because it's trying to find the 3G signal? Why is there no on/off switch for 3G? Though I heard that in iOS 5.1 beta 3 they have brought it back, but of course I can't install that... T_T

Hello forum! Haven't been here for ages, but it seems you have all been talking away

-------------------------------------------------

ALAS, I have good and bad news

--------------------------------------------------

After the 5.0.1 update (both available builds) my battery life got even worse!!!!

Basically, I have the "Phantom usage" issue. Every hour on standby my phone clocks up 30-40minutes of USAGE, and drops 4-7% battery

I have had excellent service from apple. I have had two new sim cards, and I am on my second Unit. And I am speaking directly with a rep on their end.

I am now VERY CLOSE to fixing this once and for all

Firstly, check this forum...

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3491623?start=0&tstart=0

Especially the posts on page three.

My post follows:

If you are having phantom usage, check SIM APPLICATIONS and check serial numbers!

POST FROM THE OTHER FORUM:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------

To FiniteAffinity and Marc Man - THANK YOU!!

I am in the same boat and am currently speaking with Apple directly about this 50% phantom usage issue due to "SIM card applications"

iPhone 4S 64GB White, VODAFONE UK, DQ Serial number

I am on my second handset. Second Sim. Same problem.

My battery drain only disappears when I remove my SIM CARD.

Interestingly, setting up a phone as new (as suggested by apple care) INITIALLY removes sim applications from SETTINGS>PHONE, however, when I turn the phone off, then restart it, the menu option returns.

When it wasnt there, I had great battery for 24 hours, only droping 50% with usage and a tiny amount of phantom usage clocking up. Once I restart the phone, the SIM APPLICATION option returns, as does the evil battery drain!

I have emailed my apple rep and I should hopefully be booking an appointment to get me a C3. I will post back in the next few days with news. I am so happy to be so close to resolving this!!!

Here is my very latest trick to prolong the iphone 4s battery:

turn on all notifications and push emails - even if you dont have one, just turn 'em on. the more the merrier.

charge the **** thing for about a week without touching it or even looking at it to see how's it doing.

at about the 7th exactly day at percisely 00:00:00 at midnight, pull the **** thing from the plug, just unplug the whole thing. if you even miss by a few 1/100 of a second, this trick would not work, so be patient.

i have done this trick and whoallaa...my iphone 4s battery lasts for months on a single charge and it can make free long distance calls too.

Hello guys i have C3 serial with 9a405 only thing i did not try was factory reset, all other solutions are fail for me "mail accounts, siri, location services even turning off cellular data". I have %50 phantom usage %7 battery drop per hour on standby.
I notice some strange behavior; when i reset my phone settings to defaults battery indicator went up several percent for example %97 to %99 and it will be fine for half a day then i start to use some apps, it will back on fast drain again. "turning on-off wifi or location services does not make any differance i did not check vodafone sim applications" phantom usage is about %50 all the time after several hours of usage or battery drops under %60-%50 percent some how usage statistics returns to normal and i get %7 drop for all night.
My old iphone 4 with same apps and usage has no battery issues at all, i can walk with her for 7.5 hours with nike+gps and music on all the time.

I have a very strange issue with mine:

I can use it all day from 8am until about 5pm, that's 9 hours, and make a few calls/listen to music/receive my emails on it, and when arriving home it will be at about 50% battery life. Between 5pm and midnight, 7 hours, of sat doing nothing, the phone will ALWAYS discharge itself.

The strange thing is, that at my home I have NO network signal (we live in a field), neither do I connect it to the Wifi, so how on earth can it be draining that much charge??
