Iphone 4S / iOS5 - Battery drain / issues - An idea Ihaven't seen anywhere yet (17th October 2011)....

As with many iPhone 4S adopters, I have noticed that mybattery is under performing compared to my iPhone 4 (on iOS4, granted). The issue seems to be standby, more than usage. In standby my iPhone 4 only dropped1% battery every 2-3 hours. Now I am dropping 1-2% every hour.

I have done ALL the tricks I have read on these forums (listed below)

However, just now, I received a "Badge" style notificationon my home screen from an app which is NOT IN MY "NOTIFICTAION CENTRE"LIST. It transpires that some of the apps not in the list can still push notifications in the old style. Annoyingly, these are apps which, on my old iPhone 4, I had all notifications turned off!! The move the iPhone 4S/iOS5 has turned them on!

I have gone through them switching everything off. I willsee what happens with that

Could this be a battery drain that people are missing? I amnot hugely technical with this kind of stuff, more a process of eliminationtype guy!

The tricks I HAVE employed:

Set up phone as new (lost all my game saves, dammit!)

Turned off locations services to all but those apps that need it (one or two)

Turned off all unnecessary items in notification centre

Bluetooth OFF

Wifi ON (I am usually at home or work; wifi is LESS of adrain than 3G)

Ping OFF in restrictions

Itunes OFF in restrictions

Hidden location services such as time zone locator OFF

iCloud deleted

No email on phone.

Reset network settings

Lowered brightness

key sounds OFF

(Possibly others....I have spent some time on this!)

P.S. I have not run a full battery cycle yet, in process, and will report back with results

P.P.S ...Apple..... PATCH iOS5 ASAP! (assuming this will solve it!) Surely there cannot be THAT many defective iPhone 4S batteries out there?!

I just got my 4S and ****.. my 3gS gave better battery life than it. Using the 3Gs with a few calls and about 1 hour of light gaming and surfing, resulted in 87% battery (1 hour,3 mins Usage; Standby 19 Hours, 55 mins).

The 4S, well, it's been drained by about 60%. I really dissapoiting that apple continue to remain silent and uncommittal of the fix.

I purchased two 4s Iphones (week ago or so). I upgraded mine from 3g to 4S. My wife started with the 4S. Long story short, mine drained like crazy (3 hours - 15% drop for me, something that took my wife's phone 24 hours). I drained my phone completely, recharged it (a bit 20% or so), backed everything up (itunes), erased all content and settings, and restored from itunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137?viewlocale=en_US ) - problem resolved! I hope this helps others!!

After being frustrated for a week because of the 4s battery issue, yesterday was my first taste of a brighter future... I was able to get 1 day of standby time and about 6.5 hours of usage time. That included several phone calls, text messages, 3d game playing, internet access, siri, maps, and I even used it for my wifi hotspot for about 15 minutes. Still I had hoped for at least charging my phone every other day, much like my 3g back then. It's good to note however, that I also performed 3 phone resets and 4 full cycle battery charge. Oh and I also disabled location services and notification for apps that I deemed unneccessary. I hope this could be better with the upcoming ios 5.1 update.

i just bought my iphone 4s 32gb but the battery drainage is so quick that i cant imagine. first i restored it from my itune back up and i thought that it might be due to the number off app so i restored it as a new one and lost every thing but the battery drainage still persists. i looked up everywhere in the support discussion and applied all possible solution but the problem is annoying... i even contact to the customer care mentioning my problem she suggested me the same that i already did....

being satisfied from the iphone 4 i decided to buy 4s but regretting...if apple wants to preserve its reputation of brand, it has to think otherwise beware....AN APPLE ROTS FROM WITHIN NOT FROM OUTSIDE (other competator)

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

Reezuan,

I am not sure what David really means.... But the procedure is to restore as new. Add back things like settings, email accounts... etc by hand. This is the stuff you would get back by doing a restore from a backup. It should only take a few minutes to add back this stuff manually.

Then you can sync from the the iCloud or iTunes and not re-incorporate past bad code and settings.

What you don't want to do is restore a backup from iTunes or the iCloud. If you do a sync you will just get back your phonebook, apps, calendar, music...etc and not bad code or settings as you might from doing a restore from a backup.

Sorry if this is not really clear but it is late in my neck of the woods.

CAVEAT- make sure you do a sync to iTunes or the cloud which ever you normally use before doing any of the things mentioned above. That way you will have your phonebook... etc saved away. By the way terminology gets weird a sync and a backup are not the same animals. A backup is something that contains iPhone settings and iOS data files and such. A sync only deals with your "stuff" i.e. Apps, Music, Phonebook, calendar...etc.

I have been fighting battery drain since ios 5 came out. Totally disgusted. I have tried everything possible to fix the problem including ordering two replacement 4s phones. I found on-line a recommendation to upgrade firmware to 9A406 (i did have 9A405). This update has not been sent out from Apple to the masses but it is available if you google it. I installed in at 7pm yesterday and as of right now 9:20 pm 26 hours later I have 20% left! Yeah!

Give it a try - i hope it works for you!
