Iphone 4S / iOS5 - Battery drain / issues - An idea Ihaven't seen anywhere yet (17th October 2011)....

As with many iPhone 4S adopters, I have noticed that mybattery is under performing compared to my iPhone 4 (on iOS4, granted). The issue seems to be standby, more than usage. In standby my iPhone 4 only dropped1% battery every 2-3 hours. Now I am dropping 1-2% every hour.

I have done ALL the tricks I have read on these forums (listed below)

However, just now, I received a "Badge" style notificationon my home screen from an app which is NOT IN MY "NOTIFICTAION CENTRE"LIST. It transpires that some of the apps not in the list can still push notifications in the old style. Annoyingly, these are apps which, on my old iPhone 4, I had all notifications turned off!! The move the iPhone 4S/iOS5 has turned them on!

I have gone through them switching everything off. I willsee what happens with that

Could this be a battery drain that people are missing? I amnot hugely technical with this kind of stuff, more a process of eliminationtype guy!

The tricks I HAVE employed:

Set up phone as new (lost all my game saves, dammit!)

Turned off locations services to all but those apps that need it (one or two)

Turned off all unnecessary items in notification centre

Bluetooth OFF

Wifi ON (I am usually at home or work; wifi is LESS of adrain than 3G)

Ping OFF in restrictions

Itunes OFF in restrictions

Hidden location services such as time zone locator OFF

iCloud deleted

No email on phone.

Reset network settings

Lowered brightness

key sounds OFF

(Possibly others....I have spent some time on this!)

P.S. I have not run a full battery cycle yet, in process, and will report back with results

P.P.S ...Apple..... PATCH iOS5 ASAP! (assuming this will solve it!) Surely there cannot be THAT many defective iPhone 4S batteries out there?!

iPhone 4, iOS 5, iPhone 4S, NOT iPhone 4

Well you dont have to turn it all off, but you cant have every single thing on either. There has to be some balance. I have badges on for some stuff, alerts for other stuff, location services on for others. I also leave my wifi on almost all the time and use bluetooth to play music at my desk 2-3 hrs a day or more. I disable push for everything because push is a battery hog on any device out there, and its useless to me. With the volume of email I get at work, theres no point knowing every time I have a mail.

I agree with most posts so far. It would be nice to be able to use all the new and neat features on ios5. Why have them if we can't use them without draining the battery? Why doesn't iCloud have a series of options like updating iCloud only once per day sometime at night when asleep. Or semi frequently like a few times per day rather than constantly?

You'll have to do that for pretty much every smart phone that you expect to last a day or more... it's just the way things are right now or perhaps you could try looking at Blackberry, I think they're still best in class for battery life but other email/calendar/address book and lite web surfing don't expect much. It's a give and take... pretty graphics/animations + high resolition display requires more power to drive them.

Went to bed at midnight with iPhone 4s battery at 100%. Woke at 7am to find phone completely dead and battery fully discharged. Have recharged over the course of today to 100% and at 3pm disconnected the power.

Now 41 minutes later with minimal usage (read a couple of emails on wifi) the battery is now showing 87%

Most location services and bluetooth disabled etc etc.....

Was fine up until a couple of days ago so will try a full restore otherwise its going back!

Now 85% as i have written this post on my computer.....

My 4s was fine for the past weeks that i have the phone. The update installed days ago and then this am i noticed a 10% battery drain per hour in standby mode. i turned off the phone to preserve it as my emergency backup device until i could get to a charger. i am loathe to turn off all functions as that is what makes it a pleasurable device. i previously had a first generation droid and was underwhelmed by battery life. i was really hoping for better from apple and verizon. i am not an iphone convert by any means. any use depletes the thing at an alarming rate. can't wait to see the samsung nexus prime. hopefully better than this bad investment.

I have done full restore and without any apps so clear phone as from factory. Charged it to 100% and looked after a couple of hours that usage and standby time are almoust equal. It could not be an app running in background. I also turned off wifi and localization service. I tryed almoust every solution that has ben explaned here on this forum but with no succes. Are battery problems related only to phones with 16GB storage?
