Had the i4s for just over a week now. The first few days, with iOS5 I didn't experience any problem. I run now iOS5.0.1 and the phone has started to switch off by itself.

Tried to connect to iTunes but no response. Then I tried a hard reset a couple of times. The first didn't produce any result, the second I kept pressing the two buttons longer and after approx 20 secs it came back to life. The battery shows still 54% power, so it's definitely not a battery issue. I would guess it's a 5.0.1 software issue, but after reading from this thread it appears also phones running iOS5 have the same issue.

What the ... ?

I bought the 4S when it came out and had no issues with it concerning this. Then it was stolen during Halloween weekend in NOLA and when I received the new one from the insurance company this issue started happening. I didn't pay too much attention to it and figured I'd go away as it had ocassionally happened on my other iPhones. But the problem is happening at least once a day and if I dont notice it, the phone would remain off until I look at it. So i finally called and they told me to restore it to the factory settings. So we'll see what happens.

In the meantime, is there any way to download all the songs and apps without restoring it from backup?

Just an update... I took the iPhone to the Apple store today to see if they would just replace it due to the fact that the feedback on here and on other threads was that this problem is caused by a hardware problem and not a software one. The young woman insisted on doing a hard reset that resets the entire operating system and firmware. After going back to work it only took about four hours for the problem to pop up again. This time I made sure that iCloud was off and that I had done no restores. This is obviously a hardware problem and I will be going back to the genius bar this evening after work to have the phone replaced!

Im on my 2nd iphone 4s, just received my new replacement yesterday nov. 16th. I restored my replacement phone from icloud backup and within the next 4-5 hours it turned off 3 times, one time I had to hold both home button and power button to get it back on. The next day, which is today, it has turned off twice on its own. One time I had to do hard reset and the other time I just hit the home button. In both cases of it turning off, I had just hung up from talking on the phone, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not? Before I call Apple supple for the FOURTH time since buying a 4s, what is the general consenses on this issue, hardware, or software? I read all the post on here but it didn't seem like there was a definite answer yet? Any recommendations for troubleshooting? Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near an apple store so I have to do eveverything over the phone.

Thanks

Hi,

I have an iPhone 4 that has worked like a charm for about a year. Since upgrading to 5.0.1 I believe it randomly shuts off, but so far always in my pocket. I've tried all sorts of covers---no difference. I can't see how pressing buttons inadvertently can turn it off, anyway (except for simultaneous 15 sec home+off). I don't think the being in the pocket is relevant, but it is a remarkable correlation.

Strange behavior after turning on again:

- I do not have to unlock the Sim card

- I do not have battery usage statistics in settings-> general -> usage -> usage. Just a dash (a proper one, an en-dash---this is apple after all:-) even though I have fully charged it many times.

These two point suggest---for me---it is a software issue.

Cheers,

I just spent about 40 minutes on the phone with Express Lane. I explained my situation to the agent that answered he immediately asked me to hold so he could get the "Senior Agent" on to talk with me. About 25 minutes later I finally get the "Senior Agent" who was very apologetic about the wait. He reviewed what I explained to the original agent. He then offered up a replacement saying something to the effect of "this is an issue we are currently capturing" then followed that up with "we are going to get you a replacement out right away, our engineers would like to run diagnoses on your device"

He said to take my case number to the Apple Retail Loction I specified to get the replacement (I also had the option to have a replacement mailed but it would take 1-3 business days to ship). Going to the store in the morning. Hopefully the new device cures my issue.

My iPhone 4S repeatedly shut itself off, often several times a day. Sometimes it would take a hard reboot (both buttons) to activate it, at other times just the home button would do. The Diagnostic & Usage Data log was full of panic reports. I took it to the Genius Bar where I was told that the trouble was due to not removing the open apps periodically (double-clicking the home button and then removing the apps that appear at the bottom of the screen). Then he wiped the phone of its data and restored it. I went home and the next day my phone randomly shut itself off again, so the problem was not the open apps. I went back to the Genius Bar, where a different person listened to my tale and replaced my phone. I think you have to ask for a new phone; nothing else will work.
