iCloud deleted my Outlook calendar appointments, contacts, and tasks - HELP!!

Q1 -- How and why this happens is very upsetting. I thought iCloud would "SIMPLY WORK" and it does not. Not without sacrafice. I need to know how to sync using iCloud so that I don't lose my outlook appointments and my contacts and tasks don't get transferred to iCloud while being deleted in the main account's folders. Help?

Q2 -- I have two Apple IDs, is that the issue?

Summary / history:

I logged in iCloud control panel applet with my @me.com Apple ID, checked the boxes for Calendar, Task, and Contacts. It auto closed outlook while installing. iCloud showed finished integrating with Outlook. I re-opened Outlook and ALL my appointments were GONE. Went to Tasks, they were gone, went to contacts, they were gone. I went to the "folders" view in my main outlook account and sure enough, the Calendar, Task, and Contacts were empty. But I also saw a new acct created (iCloud) and upon opening it's tree, I found them there and in tact.

I fixed it by opening the iCloud applet, unchecking them and hitting apply (closed outlook before hand). iCloud transferred them back to my main outlook account (dukeweb.com)

*note: Outlook 2010 and Windows 7 sp1 Ult.

*note: Have two Apple IDs:

**main Apple ID, (@dukeweb) is my personal email addr, use for iTunes/store and

**second Apple ID (@me) was created with MobileMe so was prompted to and use it for iCloud.

Windows 7, Outlook 2010, iCloud, 2 apple IDs

It turns out that you do have a problem. Unless you can afford to lose all of your data (in this case contact information) do not assume your data is safe because it resides in a cloud.

You don't own the cloud, you don't manage the cloud, you have no control whatsoever over the cloud. If something happens to that hard drive that it's living on (tornado, hurricane, flood, theft, virus whatever) you will lose your only copy.

That is what backup is for, an extra copy in case of disasters.

I did say I was going to back it up.

I read the classic "F*** the cloud" blog post a year or two ago. I get it.

I'll have to look, I'm not sure there isn't an iCloud.pst file on my PC somewhere.

Anyone know?

thanks

There will be a .pst, it should be in this format yourname@me.com.pst

In Windows control panel go to Mail>Data Files to find it.

You all have no idea how fast my heart was beating when I realized that iCloud had deleted all my Contacts & Calendars in Outlook. HOWEVER, I just discovered in Outlook that there is a new tab on the left hand colum that says "Contacts in iCloud" and when I select that, I can see all my Contacts. Same thing with Calendar -- I had to go down and select the "Calendar in iCloud" calendar and then could view my calendar. I'm not totally sure and need to investigate whether the calendar & contact files still reside on my PC. If not, I will be done with iCloud, but if they still exist on my PC, then I will be OK using the iCloud because it's worth it to have the automatic updates from iPhone to PC.

ICloud really screwed up my contact list and calendar. I had three partial calendars and no contact list. My first reaction was to delete ICloud from my computer which I did and then both disappeared. I had no contact list and no calendar. I was able to retrieve both by reloading ICloud but not checking off anything.

My advice to anybody thinking of using ICloud for calendar, etc. is to back up your calendar and contact list to a USB key.

It is kinda neat to download an app and see it appear on the IPhone at the same time. I still sync my IPhone so it doesn't really help much.

Add me to the list of people confused with the deletion of calendar and contacts. I understand now but I sure don't like it.

Is there any way to make Outlook open with Calender in iCloud and Contacts in iCloud open by default? As it is now, when Outlook is started I have to manually check the boxes next to the iCloud folders to get them to display.

Also, why do I have the folders "Calendar from iCloud" and "Calendar in iCloud?" What's the difference?

So, here's what I do to keep all my information where it belongs in the main Outlook folders as well as in my iCloud account. It is fairly easy and only takes a few minutes. In Outlook, I go to Import and Export and export my Personal Files (Calendar, Tasks, Contacts, etc., everything but my emails) to a .pst file and save it to my desktop. Then I go back to Import and Export and Import the file I just saved to my desktop into the iCloud folder. Only takes a few minutes every few weeks and I have everything where I think most of you are looking for it to be! Good Luck!
