iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

In this consumers view, it is way past the point where Apple should step up and do the very thing that they've built a reputation for - namely be the stellar support organization that they've demonstrated in the past and have used to differentiate themselves from the others in the pack.

It is unconscionable that they haven't communicated to every single 4S owner to say they are aware of the fault, are working on the fix, and appreciate the patience that each and every user has exhibited! It's been a known issue for nearly 6 months and still Apple insists on forcing its valued and loyal customers to jump through all the hoops and stay the course of public ignorance regarding the issue.

Come on Apple - do the right thing for your Customers - not just the right thing for you!

If you get the chance to talk to a tech supervisor, they do say they know and are aware and that the problem is being worked on. The supervisor I talked to told me that they had become aware and that a solution was being worked on. Call iphone tech support and ask to speak to a supervisor. I did and they sent me a brand new phone not a replacement and I haven't had any trouble with it. Perhaps not many have called and if they would, you would get an announcement. I almost wonder if they haven't said anything because they don't want people to start claiming they have this issue, when they don't really. I told the supervisor about this thread and she said she was aware of it, but only a few people have actually called about the issue. They are willing to help you out if you just speak up and are polite when you do. The supervisor I talked to has been great. She continues to check with me to see if I am having problems, so I am happy with that service. I think they are concerned that people not having the issue will jump on the bandwagon in hopes of getting something for free. My advice is call and speak with a supervisor.

I did talk to a Apple associate and he suggested to restore it completely from scratch to determine if the problem is with the software or hardware. I had already done that. So, he suggested that I go to a Apple store near by to get it replaced. However, I did ask him if 5.1 would fix this issue and he did not answer my question. Instead, he said Apple has no knowledge of any issues similar to this on 4S. Even if it did, it may be small.

I am not talking about the Apple Store people. I called the iphone technical help number and asked to speak with a tech supervisor. They are the ones that can offer you a new phone. They are good to work with. The people at my local store for the most part told me they hadn't heard of the problem and that people probably don't know how to work their phone. I gave up running into the store and called the tech line and when the first tech person said he didn't know what to tell me and looked at how many problems I had had with the 4s phones I had, he told me that he would put me through to a tech supervisor because they might have heard about it. I talked to her and she noted that the first three phones that I had dealt with had come from the same batch. I expressed how frustrated I was and that I was about to give up. She noted that I was also a long time customer and offered me the new phone. I was happy and pleased that she wasn't questioning the problem.

I posted previously in this enormous thread. I was having the OCNA issue repeatedly.

After having performed a full reset of my phone and a restore from backup, I placed a call and the very first call I placed had the issue.

So I rebooted my phone and tried again. I haven't had the problem again since the reboot. I haven't made a ton of calls but still, I was having this issue on a very regular basis before.

If it does happen again, I'll schedule an appointment for service - or speak to a technical supervisor by phone to have it replaced.

And now, I think I will stop receiving updates from this thread because I'm getting way too many emails.

Apple - Snap out of it! Clearly you must see that your customers are rallying and ranting against your lack of diligence and communication to your user community about this issue. Can't be good.

How do you tell what batch your iphone is from? i'm in New Zealand and have the OCNA issue. Do you guys think this problem only affected a few batches produced within a certain time period or you think it is more widespread? If it's possible to tell what batch your phone is and we all list our batch number we might start seeing some sort of pattern, or not. Would be interesting to know anyway.

I'm trying to decide whether to wait for the 5.1 update and see if it fixes it, or just take it back and get it replaced and run the risk of having to go through multiple phones to get a good one. I do kind of agree with someone who posted earlier about not being happy with a phone that has had its dodgy hardware "patched" by a software update. Kinda like putting a band-aid over a cut that needs stitches, the problem is still under there. I'm a bit OCD with things like this i'd just like to know that my phones hardware was 100% BEFORE the 5.1 update. Cause once this update comes out and if it does patch the problem, then no more option of swapping phones.

Just my rant on the subject

The supervisor I talked to, was able to see all the serial numbers for the phones I had tried and had problems with and told me that all the phones but one that I had tried were from the same batch. The last problem phone I had was from a different batch she told me. I am sorry thesaint_dfw, that I misunderstood your post and even sorrier that you did not get a similar response as I did. I don't know what to say. I had a really good experience. I think you would need to see a series of serial numbers to see a commonality to see a batch pattern. Apparetly, there was something that was the same in all the serial numbers. The new phone I got the supervisor told me was from a totally different batch. I hope things work out for everyone. I hung in and finally got a phone that has not exhibited the problem. It does have the latest increment of OS that people are saying is a batch that has for some, fixed the problem. Hang in there, things will work out.

My phone I found out was made week one of 2012. I hope that site is safe. I hope that everyone is able to get a resolution to their issue. I finally did, and now I am happy. I have used Siri to see if that would trigger it, and it did not. Did you buy AppleCare Plus? I did, and maybe that is why they were so willing to help me. I don't know, but the supervisor I talked to has been contacting every so often to see if the new phone is having problems, which I think is nice of her. (I already stated this in an earlier post.) I had almost given up in frustration until I talked to her. I have also discovered that sometimes the problems are with the carrier. My carrier is AT&T and they have been having problems in my area which has caused dropped calls for many people with different phones. I just wanted to respond to Conor Taylor. Conor, I am sorry for you and all others having the problem. I had been dealing with other phones that all had this issue. The new one I just got has not had any problems.

interesting that our phones are all from a similar time period, i'd love to see what others are. Think i'm gonna wander down to the Vodafone shop soon and get them to replace it which involves them sending it to a 3rd party repair place and then when they (hopefully) work out its faulty they send a new one back to the store for me. Bit of a muck around but no apple store here in NZ. Lets hope my next phone works. This really isn't good enough for a peice of equipment that retails here for $1200 if you go contract free (don't worry i didn't pay that) it should just work. You never hear of samsung galaxy phones having antenna or ocna problems. this really warrants a product recall if you ask me. i love apple but this is seriously putting me off. They feel they have to release a new model of these things every god **** year but if it's not gonna work then why do it? obviously money and we're just ants in their ant farm and they couldn't give a crap but personally i wouldn't care if they came out every 2 years if it meant they'd actually work properly.

Thats my 2nd rant. hopefully the last.

I have one of the early iphone 4s. Funny, that this morning my first call after the upgrade to 5.1 (9B5141a) the other party couldn't hear me... same symptoms. Later I was trying to find a pattern and called my phone and audio worked beautifully. Landline to iphone4 was fine. The iphone to iphone audio call failed. Anyone else notice a pattern? is it mobile to mobile that this no audio is seen? or is mobile to landline also just as problematic.

I'm surprised given the number of hits on this issue there has been no class action raised yet.

When I got my phone, I had to sign something saying "Telus isn't responsible at all for your iphone, you have to deal with apple"

Mar 3, 2012 4:21 PM in response to derekfromsaintjohn

i've found it doesn't matter, iphone to mobile, iphone to land line... same problems. I especially noticed if you ask siri a few questions (at least two in a row) then quit out and try to make a call it almost always has the problem on that first call after using siri.

Just went to the Vodafone NZ store and left it there for them to send away hopefully my next one is trouble free i'll keep you all updated. I decided not to wait around and see if the 5.1 update would cover up this mess because i feel thats all it would be, a software patch covering up faulty hardware. Someone needs to start writing some heavy e-mails to Apple, or the ministry of consumer affairs complaining of unfair trading etc (not sure what your equivalent of ministry of consumer affairs is in the USA) Apple must certainly know of this issue by now, lets be honest they can play dumb all they like but we know they know. The fact they havent even ackknowledged the issue and are continuing to sell or replace phones with these defective ones is surely a breach of fair trading. I'm no lawyer but i'm sure it must be.
