iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

But it is also happening to iphone 4 users who have updated to the 5.0 and 5.01 software. This makes me think ther maybe two problems. One is with the iphone 4s and connectivity and the other is with the new software. Otherwise why are iphone 4 users suddenly having problems since they updated? See this link:

One month into the replacement phone and the phone still works with NO malfunctioning. This replacement phone was a "black box", no charger, no headphones phone, got from the Apple store. My impression is that these phones are tested "better" than the retail phones in the original box.

The only small annoyance is that when using the phone, there is a 1 second mic silence period after which the mic is audible but I trained myself to say hello with a ... delay of 1 sec 🙂. Otherwise I would need to say hello 2-3 times if I do it fast but the call will always work (unlike with my original phone).

Battery life is significantly improved. I unplug the phone from charger at 8AM and plug it in at around 10PM. By the time I plug it in, I am at 50%. This is with 6 pop email accounts fetching, pushing and with a exchange account set to push, location services on, SIRI on, 3G on and so ... on 🙂

Everything on this replacement phone works flawlessly and I could not find anything to complain about.

Having the same issue. I compiled a list of notes that I plan on showing today. I thought nothing of it thinking it was network. Stuff happens. I will post back and let you guys know the outcome. Here is my notes for your benefit. It does seem like if the phone is in standby longer the liklihood of the problem reoccuring is greater. I personally think it is a sensor glitch as my raise to speak also doesn't always work right. Otherwise awesome phone. I work in IT and generally find notes as a helpful way for me to wrap my brain around problems. I definitely am starting to think it is a sensor glitch.

1. Problem since day 1 but never thought anything of it. Thought it was network.

a. If I had known I would of had this phone back to you guys on day 1. However I was in a location with low network reception at the time.

2. Probability of the problem reoccurring is greater when the phone is in standby longer.

3. It is almost like the speaker is not turning on or getting power like it is still asleep.

3. Turning off bluetooth sometimes triggers it after a long sleep.'

4. Incoming calls always work properly without a hitch. I think this wakes up the ear piece.

5. No clue if this is software or hardware.

6. Seems like thousands of others are having this problem. The description is exactly what I am experiencing.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857?start=495&tstart=0

a. US

b. Canada

c. Europe

7. Willing to wait it out for a software update but no clue since some people say a phone replacement solved it.

8. Turning mute on and off always fixes it or speaker on and off.

9. The problem is gradually getting even worse. Fresh iPhone as I have never owned an iPhone before. Restore doesn't work.

10. Mixed reports about Apple knowing about the issue and it is software. Some Apple Stores are just giving out replacement phones which also doesn't always work.

11. Not good for my job as I keep saying hello and can not hear anybody.

12. Timer keeps ticking no audio.

13. https://www.facebook.com/iPhone4SOutgoingCallNoAudio?sk=wall&filter=1 Consensus is that a hardware replacement fixes it.

14. Put phone to sleep for 45 minutes. Made a call to my work phone at my desk. I could hear my work phone but no audio in my iPhone.

15. Totally out of my 30 day window as I ignored the issue but now it keeps getting worse. Wouldn't trade this in for a different phone but want a replacement as this seems to be the only way most individuals are getting the fix.

Thank you,

My iphone's UDID (Unique Device Identifier) has been registered to a developer's account who had paid $99 for IOS developer program. As far as I know, you can not have the "IOS beta" working unless your UDID has been saved onto a slot.

By the way I am not telling everyone to follow the same route. I have tried & glad that it worked & sharing this information with people. Although, this doesn't change my opinion about Apple, I still think that they might have sold hundreds of thousands of "phones" those can not establish a call properly. This is something more than bad luck...

I'm glad to see that this has worked so well for you.

If you can answer this question I have, I'd be very happy. Clearly, since you're running 5.1 beta 2 you're either a developer or you're jailbroken. I'm going to go on the hunch that you might be on a developer account and if so, I'm wondering whether you have to be the paid (99.99/yr) developer, or if you can use the free developer account to run the beta software?

Thanks in advance if you can answer that.

Here's how we handle it in the Netherlands (with T-Mobile carrier) - I just found out today, a few hours ago!

You go to the T-Mobile shop where you bought the product from and they tell you that it is the first time they hear about this no audio in outgoing call issue as well as the echo issue (which is just another potential problem with the iPhone 4S. I don't know how common echo problem is, but maybe because it is less disturbing than no audio, its topic is less lengthy). They tell you that they can take it and send it to repairment (because there's 2 years of warranty), and if it turns out to be broken, the repairment service will send back a new one. They told me this can take up to a month. I thought this is unacceptable and asked for an alternative. They told me I can go to the Apple shops in Amsterdam because that's where it will be handled anyway. I thought "OK! I will try lé Apple shop! Lé me don't want to wait for 4 weeks! And from what I read I see that it is likely that the new phone that will be sent might come with the same problems anyway!"

So I went to this "Apple shop" (in Amsterdam. There are I guess 2 or 3). They told me the following:

1- They are not an Apple store (and indeed are only called "iCenter"), but simply a reseller. They cannot help. They have nothing to do with phones bought from T-mobile or Vodafone or whatever carrier. There is actually no Apple Store in the Netherlands. And their answer to the question "Then, where are these phones sent for repairment?" is "Uhm I dunno :/"

2- These problems are indeed very common in the Netherlands with iPhones. They do not know why T-mobile says they hear it for the first time.

3- People in T-Mobile are always bullshitting.

So, the Netherlands totally failed handling this issue, I guess as most other European countries. Customers are being screwed by carriers, and carriers are probably being screwed by Apple who doesn't try its best to provide the best possible service.

This will not be forgotten you know. I'll never buy an iPhone again. The worst thing you can do as a company is to cast great doubt in the customer's mind about the well-being of a newly manufactured product. And Apple did not only do this but also failed to handle it properly. They actually failed to acknowledge it in the very first place. They think that there's nothing wrong with iPhone 4s? Why are they silent? Why don't they at least say they are working on it? Are they stupid, yes stupid enough not to see that their silence only will do more damage to their company? Isn't it more than obvious when they are selling malfunctioning products?

In whatever country you are: Tell people not to buy this product. There are zillions of complaints about vital issues like no audio in outgoing calls, echo, static noise etc. At least wait for a software update or a statement from Apple before recommending anyone.. I do not know what else to say. And customers: Please raise your voices because it is the very you who is being screwed up very badly and in an ugly way. It is your, or your daddy's or whatever's hours of work and money.

I am almost 3 month into the replacement phone (black box, no accessories) and the phone works fine, no sign of the previous issues. It is not perfect though, every single outgoing call will take about 2-3 seconds until the person can hear me and this is very repeatable.

Relative to all the comments here about these issues being hardware and/or software related, the situation is not like black and white. The functionality of these phones is based on few ICs (integrated circuits). Most of these ICs are programmable these days but some features more so than others. For example, you could have a switch chip. You could program it in the firmware to turn on or off and you could put a delay in to take longer between toggles but you can't go below it's hardware switching time and if you needed that you would be out of luck.

My point in the example above is that there are things that could be adjusted from firmware programming but not everything. The only way to tell and not guess is by knowing the schematic of the phone, the programmability of the ICs and the software. Everything else is meaningless discussions.

I believe with a high degree of confidence that Apple is well aware of the issues posted on their websites but due to potential implications for their business will take the time to get to the bottom of this and fix it if they can or come up with a replacement strategy if this proves to be a major quality flop.

Now speaking guessing job, I believe that since the flaw is recurring in recent batches, well after these issues surfaced 2 month ago, probably Apple believes that they can fix this in the software at least to a certain degree. I am well aware of Apple's quality levels and they would not continue manufacturing devices using faulty hardware components. They would go after the specific manufacturer and make it pay dearly.

It's hard for people from countries where the retailers have their way selling malfunctioning stuff but try to hang in there, if you have no choice, for the next IOS release. I am confident things will get better on the Apple side for this product.

Ok you guys,

Yesterday I just did what Bramson suggested. I've downloaded the 800 Mb file and had it installed on my iPhone 4S 32G W. The only difference: instead of clicking the 'restore' button I used the 'check for update' button and also I have a MacBook so my hit key was 'alt'... not 'shift'.

Therefore and for the time being, my phone is working without this issue in every single number that I've dialed.

Lets see how it works out in the next days.

Thanks.

I've been using beta3 for several weeks & have not faced with the problem you claimed. perhaps you should do a clean re-install.. OR you might have downloaded & installed a corrupted firmware.

omidi

IOS 5.1 Beta 3 has a bug about Keyboad, when you go back to home screen from Spotlight search the keyboard dos not disapear, and it is still on the screen

but the OCNA has been fixed.

Have u tried the method of enabling the 3G mobile data? Because it was immediately worked for me!!

I no need to reboot my phone after enabled it & just off the 3G mobile data back to previous condition immediately after I on the mobile data. It also worked!!

If u wanna try install the 9A406, then u have to delete the 9A405 firmware first, then download the latest 9A406 firmware & restore it. But always remember to backup your phone data using iCloud & your computer before update ur firmware. Anyway u can refer to other discussion to do it as below:

my iphone 4 have signal but won't make/received call and text

To all,

The thin paper in the back of the phone is a confirmed fix. True. But why?....

Many theories. Some say it is a bad connection and the paper "cures" the connection. Others say the sim card is not seating and the paper "cures" the connection issue. Others, such as myself say it is the antenna grounding out and cancelling each other.

Regardless, to much bad press makes All corporations listen. Facebook is the consumers new best friend for getting the word out when CNN, FOXNEWS, ABC, CBS, NBC will not.

GET YOUR MONEY BACK if you paid Apple to replace a phone that was not defective. I still say antenna issue.
