iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I do not use a BT headset and have never even toggled the BT on in the menu. As long as I hit the speaker button and then switch back, it works fine.

I had no luck resolving the issue with Apple today, then got disconnected the second time I was on hold with them. AT&T was apologetic, but couldn't fix the issue for me and they don't have any stock right now to give me another 4s.

Really irritating, but at least it works if I use the speaker button for now. Everything else about the device has worked fine.

I am having the same issue on a 4S 16GB on a Vodafone UK netwrok. I get the call screen and can see the timer but no sound. Next time I tried the speaker Icon was highlighted and I was not able to switch to handset. It seems to be very strange behaviour.

I did have it connected to a BT headset but when I tried to call the headset was sitched off. It seems the phone still thinks it is connected to BT headset!!

Anyone found a solution?

Yes, this is the same behavior I am seeing. I believe Siri is also involved somehow. Like, if you talk to Siri, then disconnect the BT headset, the "audio out" gets lost.

The last time I was stuck in this mode, I talked to Siri again, and the audio fixed itself.

Still hunting for a reproducible case, then should be able to find a solution. But definitely seems like a software (not hardware) issue.

I have had my phone since Friday Oct 14th and today I experenced this issue a couple times today. Same thing as you guys are experence. No audio on the handset ear peice but the other party can hear me fine. I can switch over to speaker which works, Sometimes going back to the ear peice it will correct itself. I did a hard reset and have not had the issue since but have only made a couple calls.

I called apple about something else today and mentioned this, they didnt have much info. Im thinking it might be a simple software glitch and it will be resolved in a update to iOS

I have tried what you suggested and still had random times when it does this. So I took it a step farther and actually turned siri off. Now it only has happened 2-3 times today. I primarily use bluetooth headsets(Jawbone Icon) but have tried other brands to see if it was the Jawbone. It was so bad on mine that it would literrally take a phone reset to get everything back to working.

I have a Sprint 32GB White iPhone 4s and I had the same issue with the earpiece speaker. I couldn't hear nothing. They can hear me. I had to put it on loud speaker in order to use my phone. It was like that for at least a couple of hours.

I called Sprint to see if they had a fix. They transferred my call over to Apple. I waited on hold for 30 min 😟. Finally someone ansewers my call. They asked me my seriel number and wouldn't you know it, the call hangs up. 😠 I didn't even bother calling back.

Not sure what the **** is going on with my phone! It started working again. I couldn't tell you what I did to fix it. I do know that I will be calling Sprint tomorrow and make sure if their is an issue, I get a new phone. Otherwise I will return the phone and switch to another carrier.

If I get any updates, I will update this board.

I have an AT&T 16GB 4s and am also having this issue. I have done some testing and from what I can tell the issue seems to be related to SIRI and specifically the Raise to Speak feature. I went the morning using my phone with this feature turned on and had the issue happen on two of 9 calls. For the afternoon, I turned the Raise to Speak feature off and I did not have the issue all afternoon, 12 calls completed. Just before this post, I went ahead and turned the feature back on and of course now I have had the issue on 3 of my last 4 calls.

I followed the solution stated in CNET website it it seems to have done the trick :-) I didn't have any issues with the sound today

OK I am aware the issue stated here goes back to 2007 but I think it is a headphone jack issue.

I will keep you posted if the problem comes back

Having the same issue. Found out how to make it happen most of the time. You can demo this to the Apple tech but I'm sure it's a software issue so hopefully they can fast track it.

1) Use Siri. Raise to speak or home button press. Doesn't seem to matter. When Siri is done answering you, press the home button.

2) Make a call. If its acting up, you will have no audio from the handset until you toggle the speaker phone button. Then the audio from the handset comes back.

I can get a failure about 1 out of every 7 calls after a Siri activation. Once it fails it usually fails for 2 or 3 calls in a row.

Hopefully a fix comes soon.
