I am having the same problem with my 4s that I waited 15 hours in line for callers AT&T and called apple. Apple said to swap iphone but I don't want to swap for a remanufactured warranty exchange phone so to me it looks like a software problem hopefully apple wakes up and starts to address these problems.

I have tried what you suggested and still had random times when it does this.  So I took it a step farther and actually turned siri off.  Now it only has happened 2-3 times today.  I primarily use bluetooth headsets(Jawbone Icon) but have tried other brands to see if it was the Jawbone.  It was so bad on mine that it would literrally take a phone reset to get everything back to working.

I'm having a similar issue with my wife's at&t iphone.  It doesn't ring and sometimes I can hear the other party and sometimes I can't.  Haven't contacted apple.  Might take it to a store this weekend.

I'm starting to think you're on to something.  I didn't use bluetooth at the end of the day and still had the issue.  I DID however use Siri...  It seemed that after a few Siri command requests, the next call I had to press the speaker button a few times to get audio restored through the handset..

    Really quite annoying...

I have a Sprint 32GB White iPhone 4s and I had the same issue with the earpiece speaker. I couldn't hear nothing. They can hear me. I had to put it on loud speaker in order to use my phone. It was like that for at least a couple of hours.

I called Sprint to see if they had a fix. They transferred my call over to Apple. I waited on hold for 30 min . Finally someone ansewers my call. They asked me my seriel number and wouldn't you know it, the call hangs up. I didn't even bother calling back.

Not sure what the **** is going on with my phone! It started working again. I couldn't tell you what I did to fix it. I do know that I will be calling Sprint tomorrow and make sure if their is an issue, I get a new phone. Otherwise I will return the phone and switch to another carrier.

If I get any updates, I will update this board.

I have an AT&T 16GB 4s and am also having this issue.  I have done some testing and from what I can tell the issue seems to be related to SIRI and specifically the Raise to Speak feature.  I went the morning using my phone with this feature turned on and had the issue happen on two of 9 calls.  For the afternoon, I turned the Raise to Speak feature off and I did not have the issue all afternoon, 12 calls completed.  Just before this post, I went ahead and turned the feature back on and of course now I have had the issue on 3 of my last 4 calls.

I followed the solution stated in CNET website it it seems to have done the trick :-) I didn't have any issues with the sound today

OK I am aware the issue stated here goes back to 2007 but I think it is a headphone jack issue.

I will keep you posted if the problem comes back

Having the same issue. Found out how to make it happen most of the time. You can demo this to the Apple tech but I'm sure it's a software issue so hopefully they can fast track it.

    1) Use Siri.  Raise to speak or home button press.  Doesn't seem to matter. When Siri is done answering you, press the home button.

    2) Make a call. If its acting up, you will have no audio from the handset until you toggle the speaker phone button. Then the audio from the handset comes back.

I can get a failure about 1 out of every 7 calls after a Siri activation. Once it fails it usually fails for 2 or 3 calls in a row.

    Hopefully a fix comes soon.

Yea same issue on Vodafone UK, 16gb 4S. Serious pain, must be a software thing, needs a fix ASAP because the calls do actually get made and the person on the other end of the call can hear you, you just can't hear them. Toggling the speaker will have to do for the moment.

Welcome to the club, german t-mobile iPhone 4s is having the same issue. It seems to be a software and not a carrier problem. I think we have to wait for the next update. Let's see how long apple will take to fix this issue. I think it will not take long, because the rising amount of exchanged iPhones will wake them up.

I have a 32GB 4S and my gf has a 16GB 4S.  We live in the same house.  Mine is perfect and hers has all the same issues that have been described so far with outgoing calls.  I did all of the software resets suggested by the customer care reps at apple and replaced the sim card but the issue persisted.  I drove over an hour to the nearest apple store this evening and had the worst time trying to get a new iphone because "the apple website and apple retail stores are on different servers."  Eventually they gave me a new iphone almost 20 minutes after closing time even though I showed up an hour before closing time.  The individuals there had great customer service but the flaw apparently is between and apple retail stores.  My first call after I walked out of the store still had the same issues.  The phone rang, the other person answered and could hear me, but I never heard the ringing on my end or her talking.  I hung up and the 2nd call worked.  I got home and my first 3 calls did not have audio but the 4th did.  I don't care at this point if it's a software or hardware issue.  My phone works perfectly and my gf's phone cannot make calls reliably.  I could handle the issues until apple puts out an update but someone who isn't tech savvy or easily acceptable of new technology expects it to work out of the box and that is what apple prides themselves on.  I convinced her to switch from a droid (which she hated) to an iphone and she even paid the early termination fee to get away from verizon.  She has told me countless times in the last week that she wishes she never switched.

Just letting everyone know that the same thing's happening on iPhone 4S's in Australia.  I concur that it looks like a software problem.  I'm disabled the 'raise to speak' and bluetooth (I had both on) and restarted the phone but still get the same issue when calling my house number 99% of the time.

Very frustrating when using the BT service in the car and the phone's in your pocket, so you can't do the quick fix.  I hope Apple fix this quickly.  I have a 2nd Genius appointment about this today and will push for an acknowledgement that it's an issue.

The same problem also happened on me after I bought the iPhone 4s yesterday. Really get annoying when most outgoing calls have no voice. You may fix it by turn the speaker on and off. But that is not what I hope to get from Apple. After reading all the other replies before mine, I decide to wait for some time to see whether Apple will release an update to fix this problem instead of exchanging for a new one.

I have the same problem on My Rogers iphone 4S in Canada.  I have no audio in when I am holding the phone and no audio out when I use my garmin BT in the car.  Both issues only happen some of the time and use of Siri seem to increase the chanc of it happening but nothing causes it 100% of the time.  I can fix it by using the speaker most of the time but not always.

I went to the Apple store today with an appointment.  I told the guy about my problem and about this forum and he told me I'll have to wait for a patch from apple, shook my hand and then quickly walked away. They were very busy. I guess that means they know about the issue???

FYI, I had Siri turned off for the first day I owned the 4S and it happened once even without Siri on.

Same issue here - seems to be Siri related. Happens several times a day.  AT&T 16G iPhone 4S.
