    I had this issue back-to-back placing an outgoing call over speakerphone, but the recipient couldn't hear me—I could hear him fine. The third call I didn't do on speakerphone and it was fine.

    Like just about everyone here I am having the same problem.  AT&T 4S 16GB that has a 1 in 5 problem with no ring tone when dialing, can't hear person dialed, ect, ect, ect.  My very first Apple product purchased because of the Apple premium product reputation.  Had a free Motorola phone previous to this and will have another in the future.  At least this phone has prevented me from buying an iPad for Christmas.  The Kindle Fire is in my future.  From everything I read it has one thing my iphone doesn't.  Reliability.

    Thanksfully my service provider is geting me out of this piece of %$#&. Unlike Apple they acknowledged there is a problem with some of the handsets. Too bad Apple stuck it's head in the sand. I thought Apple was the leader in customer care - I guessed that died with Steve Jobs.

    I also have the same problem with my AT&T 4S 64GB.  Seems to always happen if I haven't made a call for several hours.  My fix is to "End Call", as soon as you realize your phone isn't ringing, and redial.  Always seems to work properly then.  If Apple doesn't come forth with a update to fix the problem, may have to return the phone for another.

    I too am having problems with my 4s when trying to use the Bluetooth on my car..   It also gets hung up where I can't even turn off my phone to cancel the call.  The person I call has to hang up.  It happens 1in 5.

    I am also having the issue with no audio on some calls.

    Happens with calls to Mobile and Land Line phones.

    I'm considering a complete nuke and pave to see if that resolves the problem.

    I've had the original iPhone and the 3GS and this is the worse of the bunch.

    It's bad enough Sprint data is really bad without this too.

    I'm joining the thread. My wife just got a white iPhone 4S for christmas.

     

    Everything was working fine last week but 2 days ago she start complaining about audio sometimes not working on calls. I check 2 days ago (I just make 1 phone call) and could not reproduce the issue.

     

    As she was still complaining I check again yesterday and try to make at least 10 calls and on each call audio wasn't working unless I turn on speaker mode.

     

    Then I realize that Siri wasn't working anymore too: Siri didn't hear me. I try the vocal memo app too and my voice wasn't recorded anymore either. For sure Siri and the vocal memo app were fine last week.

     

    Of course I try to restart the iPhone with no success. And I try to restore 5.0.1 without success too.

     

    So after reading the last pages of this thread I'm going to try:

    - to disable the sim pin code and restart the iPhone (my wife got a pin code on her sim and it seems it fix the issue for at least 1 person in this thread)

    - to restore the iPhone with original 5.0 firmware (because it came with 5.0 and it seems to me the issue only appear after upgrading to 5.0.1 a few days ago)

    - eventually to upgrade to 5.1 beta 2 firmware (as I've got a developper account even if it's linked to my account but not to my wife's account, so I'll give it a try if nothing else work)

     

    I'll let you know later if I manage to fix the issue.

    Hello all, my replacement phone has been working, but I was having problems with voicemail so I called AT&T and they said if you are unable to make calls or recieve them, then it is a nerwork problem on their side. She worked on my voicemail problem and got it working again. I told her about my other two phones and she told me she was sending a work order to check and reset the actual network in my area. My sister's brand new phone I found out today couldn't make or recieve calls. I have no idea when the engineers will do anything, they are supposed to call me. I am going to see what happens with my sister's phone. Hers was working fine until today. So if you have AT&T, you might want to give them a call and insist they have the engineers check the actual network in your area. This might help some of you. I hope it helps my sister. I'll let you know what happens.

    Just find that if I speak in front of the mic (lower part of the iPhone) Siri and vocal memo app work again. But I need to speak really (really) close to the mic. Seems like an entry (mic) volume issue to me.

     

    Disabling sim pin code don't fix the issue, even after reinit the iPhone.

    White iPhone 4S 16gb Vodafone NL has the no audio bug using 5.0.1.

    After installing 5.1 beta2 problem was solved. Confirmed!

     

    Advise: Try to get your UDID registrered for installing 5.1 beta2 or wait on the official release of 5.1 (hopefully this month...)

     

     

     

    Still like iPhone/Apple!

    Just to say I'm experiencing the same issue with my white iPhone 4S. 2 calls on 3 there is an echo when i talk, and i can't hear the one I called. I'm waiting for the next iPhone firmware and if there is no change i'll change my phone

    DItto.  Same problem. 4 or 5 times in 2 months. Haven't worried about trying any 'fixes' yet.

    Same problem, about once or twice a month on average.  No audio on my end when placing call but other person notices no difference.  Using handsfree did resolve.  Or redialling.

    I'm in Japan, using SoftBank, and I have this 4S problem as well.

     

    It goes away if I lower the phone at the start of the call then put it back to my ear. Seems to happen only when I make the call, maybe one out of every eight or 10 calls. I have never used BT with it.

     

    Engaging/disengaging the speaker phone will also get it working.

     

    My wife does not seem to have the same problem on her 4S when she calls out.

     

    Will have to see if Siri may be the cause. I haven't used her recently, and come to think about it, I haven't noticed the dead-audio problem recently, either.

     

    Never drops the way my 3GS occasionally did, so at least that was fixed.

     

    Will be nice if Apple figures this out soon!

    Same problem here as well. 32 GB Verizon IPhone 4S.

    Seems to be 1-2 out of every 10 calls I will hear NO audio, and have to hang up and redial.

     

    Might be heading into an apple store to exchange the handset...
