iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Good Day,

Please see below a summary of my posts on another apple thread that is more suitable to this thread.

Phone info:

  • iPhone 4S, 64G, locked
  • carrier - Rogers (Canada)

Issues:

1. No sound on outgoing calls.

Placing an outgoing call and immediately after pressing the call button, putting it to my ear, will cause both parties to not hear each other in 90% of cases. Toggling the speaker button on and off will restore the sound both ways. Conversely, holding the phone off the face until ringing will work all the time.

2. Car Bluetooth outgoing audio failure.

Using the phone with my cars Bluetooth system (Sentra 2010 LE) will fail in 2 ways:
- metallic distorted sound (10% of calls, randomly)
- no outgoing sound (50% of calls, randomly)
These are associated with a glitching noise when the call is being connected through the Bluetooth, before ringing at the other end.

3. Earbuds functionality fail.

Plug in the ear buds jack. Try to place a call (call landline for example to get feedback of what happens at the other end). As soon as you get connected, you will see that the phone switches to speaker mode, the speaker button on the screen turns blue and will not respond to touch if trying to switch back to the earbuds.

For all 3 faults above:

  • SIRI does not make any difference to the issues above if on or off.
  • Bluetooth does not make any difference to the issues above if on or off.
  • Any type of firmware restore, DFU, iTunes regular restore or phone full reset will NOT make any difference to these faults.

Things that work all the time:

Using Siri through the car Bluetooth system or phone will work correctly all the time to place calls.

Receiving calls in any mode.

Resolution:

Got a replacement from Apple store (black box, no earbuds, no power adapter). Was able to recreate all the faults at the Genius Bar. Restored phone from the backup of the previous 4S. All the above faults do not show in the replacement phone. Will update if anything else pops up.

i've re-restored my 4s 32gb for the 2nd time with 5.0.1 9a406, the 1st time, the phone, after music play, represent the problem.

at today (5-6 calls), the problem is not present...

my "problem" is that i've installed film on all phone (40€) and the changing with new terminal was not good for me.

but, seen that the phone is under warranty, I will probably change, but I'm not sure solve the problem.
say it's better to wait until January for the official 5.1?

  • Hi,

For my sins I look after blackberry's at work and my wifes Iphone at home. She had a 3G for 2 years which worked great, then on Nov 11 upgraded to an Iphone4s, since then we have had 2 iphone4s devices with the outgoing call problem (high incidence of no audio, but if you click the loudspeaker icon then all is well). The 3rd phone works perfectly. I did the same thing to all of them when i received then, I upgraded the firmware to 5.1 and loaded from a backup. The second phone was worse than the first, it would virtually get stuck with the problem for several calls and then would 'work' for a while. But the record of making a successful calls without problem was only 14, I know that because whilst waiting for my appointment to see a 'guru' i just kept calling my company mobile to see how bad the problem actually was.

Its hardware, dont wait for a fix, get a new phone before the warranty expires.

download the firmware and removeSIM card from device before updating. Then click Check for Update in iTunes with ALT button (on Mac, is SHIFT on Windows), select the downloaded firmware and update.

    So much BS around here.

once more - my phone had the problem , now it's gone since I upgraded to IOS 5.1 beta.

in order to do it - you need to register your phone UDID on the apple website.

to do it you either need to buy a devlopers account ,

or get someone with a developers account to do it for you.

[some people will do if for a few dollars - look for it online]

after your phone is registered , you can Install the Firmware and apple will approve it.

do it in Itunes , press shift + restore , then you can select the file.

[make sure you do not upgrade to 5.01 ]

this solved the problem for me...

    p.s.

I would love to go to the apple shop and get a new phone

but the nearest one is four hours of flight away - so just upgraded the firmware.

    goodluck to everybody

and yes apple really fuXXXX up on this one...

So i went to the Apple Store earlier today and the chap tried to make an outgoing call after i explained the issue to him.

He encountered the same problem and without hesitation replaced the phone,

    So far its been ok!!!!!!!!!!

I had problems updating the firmware from 5.0 to 5.0.1.

I kept getting the message that the update was not possible because the firmware file was not compatible.

After several attempts it worked but i think it was via wifi as i had it connected to the pc and wifi.

So is the general concensus that it is most likely a hardware issue and waiting for a software fix isnt going to help? They said I can return the phone and they will send new one but they will charge me $35 dollars restocking fee. I am worried the replacement will do the same thing as well and I'm out another 35 bucks, this is only 2 weeks old and I had insurance, what a jip.

How often does this occur? e.g. may be 1 in 10 calls? Got my 4S 64G last week. And I haven't encounter such problem yet through the whole week. I'm mostly on 2G, only tried with a 3G SIM once. Does 2G/3G matter? I'm on 5.0.1

    Thanks.

One more thing. I've Siri turned off.

Well, I'm on my 3rd 16gb 4s and this one is working. No problems connecting and I can hear everyone fine now -- never have to switch to speaker. If I hold the mic too close to my mouth, there is an echo at times, but otherwise the problem is gone. The first 2 phones I had the issue was almost constant. Happened on over 60% of the calls I made.

Hopefully it can be fixed with a patch, but at this point, Apple hasn't even acknowledged that it's a known issue (at least not to me).

I tried talking to them on the phone, but the only way to accomplish anything was to go to the Apple Store and exchange it for a different phone.

Hi,

Thanks for response, Yes the OCNA issue has benn resolved in new IOS 5.1, but there are some points that i want to be mentioned below :

First of all, when you buy the phone you expect it to works as a phone! with normal phone functionalities, if you have an experiance in old and traditional fones, you want that your new smart phone covers all that basic features, after using your idevice, you will see that you can't make call as normal phones !!

The SMS delivery will not supported by this device, bluetooth dose not work such as another phones and so on...

these things put you in worst mentally situation.

some apple users are not home user with low knowlage of computer since, and they want to use all great functions in their devices, when i bought my phone, i saw that i bought a great game console and it is not a phone, because i cant make call like NOKIA 1100 whit no cpu no OS no every thing...

I can't use it with bluetooth for files and pictures transfer, because they have the final version of it but it is not enable, apple says it is for copyright laws and so on, but it is not acceptable

you cant put ringtone, theme and access directly via ssh to the other device... apple says you can buy ssh client terminal in app sotre, but when i buy the phone based on unix it can be free and default installed on the phone, FYI, these are not my main point.

i put these pictures here for apple's official staffs for resolving them in final released

also when you comparing the crash result you see apple needs to know the bugs,

now you paied lots of money for an expensive phone but it dose not work normaly

Apple did not respose it officially !!!!!!!

Why, the customer is not important for apple ?

they incomes and money turnovers is from other planets ?!!!

people is less important than the customers ?!

I want just noticed these points to apple for resolving these issue, and improve the customer services.

I Love Apple Phone, it is great, with very great performance, but there are some bugs already exist in device, and i hope they will fixed in new release as soon as possible.

THanks to this thread I sent my hardware iPhone 4s

Back. I got the replacement in 24 hours. They put a hold of 760.00 on my credit card.

I understand some of you will not be able to do it that way. The replacement is perfect

IT took 50 mins on phone and 2 advisors who claimed they know nothing about this.

MIne was white 32gig. I don't think after reading thus thread it makes any difference which phone

I do think it's a hardware issue. I've had all iPhones from beginning.

I have restored jail break take apart every iPhone

THis is 100%

DEfective hardware problem. It freaked me out.

THe replacement is even faster browser and better battery life

WHich still ***** compared to my iPhone But better then the first one from china

THat they replaced in 24 hours with the 760.00

HOld on my credit card. I sent my old one back in 24 hours and my credit card

WIll be released of the hold. This is total crap!

LIke some of the others have said here don't take no for an answer

GEt a new one. I'll be suprised if there is a software fix

FOr this. This is crazy and a very big story. Leo the tech guy someone should tell him

SPread the word those of you that can. I'm so ****** off I can't control myself.

I can barely write this. However I feel I owe the others here to tell my story

SOmeone else pick up the pace and pressure on apple for a press release

I hope this helps. Again I did everything restores

OVer and over 4 times and all it took was a 50 min phone call keeping my cool and having 769.00 $$

ON a credit card for a hold until they got back Their junk.

NOw I'm happy I didn't wait a day longer

PS I did this and it did not work for me

FRom above post

A regular restore didn't work for me either. I had to put the phone in DFU mode first, then do a restore as a new iphone. That eliminated the problem entirely.

NOT for me that did not work

I also agree with this post

First replacement had a bad screen (when I pressed on it you could see the LCD ripple). I'd recommend fully testing IN THE STORE before you walk out. It was a 20 minute drive back for me.

TEst the replacement before leaving store

I don't know what I would have done if this one was messed up and they were

HOlding my 760.00 bucks and I had 2 defects

PRaise god! Lol

IM out

Was at the "genius" bar in the Apple store downtown Vancouver to replace the iPhone 4S again due to mic issue. Was told that it's a software issue and that they're not replacing because presumably this can be fixed with software, in the meantime it was suggested I should click the speaker on and off to solve the problem. No word on if and when Apple will release a fix. Apple has not said anything about this publicly and none of the media/blogs have mentioned this problem which seems to affect many users and perhaps all the iPhone 4Ss out there (they're too busy writing about funny interactions with Siri.) I'm very disappointed with Apple and regret buying the iPhone 4S, now I'm kinda stuck with it, I sold my iPhone 4 otherwise this iPhone 4S would have been back in the store.

Guys and gals, I just posted this to Mashable under the following article http://mashable.com/2011/10/30/who-are-you-siri/

Hey retards from Mashable, let me give you a scoop, the iPhone 4S doesn’t work so well… as a phone, it’s all over the Apple Support forum since day 1https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857 so you can stop covering all those cute things that Siri can say and get to work. People who bought the iPhone 4S are having huge issues with the microphone, ppl on the other side of the call can’t hear you. How’s that for a scoop? It’s been dangling before your eyes for the past 2-3 weeks and you’ve just let it hang there. The mourning period for Steve Jobs is over, start giving Apple the same flack you gave Blackberry a couple weeks ago.

It might help if we get more people writing there.

I just wanted to follow up my original post to let you know that it does *not* seem to work for me to toggle my speaker button. I still hear nothing. When it happened to me yesterday again, I noticed a weird mechanical "ping" sometime during the connection of the call...but that's all I heard. I toggled the speaker button on, still heard nothing. The person receiving the call also heard nothing.

I am few days into my replacement 4S experience and I am a heavy user of most of the phones features. No issues so far other than one time, a person I called reported that my call has a lot of static even though I could hea them fine. I called again and it was fine. This may have not been related to the iPhone 4S.

Will keep updating every few days.

In response to the requests of some other posters, my replacement phone serial no starts with C39G.

My original phone (the one that was malfunctioning) serial was also starting with C39G.

Also please note that my replacement phone was a "black box" replacement phone with no charger and no headset and I got it at the Apple Store - Genius Bar where I was able to replicate all the problems I was having with the phone.

Phone was replaced 2 weeks after I bought the first one.

As a side note, a friend of mine who bought a Rogers 4S first day and initially never experienced any issues, started reporting ocasional issues with outgoing calls.

Hello,

I think also to know you from at least two mobile-phone forums in Austria 😉

I am afraid you are right in your opinion that the best way to fix the problem is to exchange the "crazy" mobile with Apple. Could you tell me how to handle it? Shall I call the Apple Austria support line by phone under 0810***** or shall I contact the support via the AT homepage "http://www.apple.com/at/support/iphone/contact/"?

What do you mean with Apple care, the iPhone care protection plan or the 90 days / 1 year support/warranty?

Where do the € 29,- come from ????

Querstions, questions, questions...... 🙂

It would be nice if you could give me a few tipps, I'm completely unexperienced in "Apple support affairs".

If you prefer, you can also contact me via the Austrian UMTSl...... forum. I guess you know my nick there 😀

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

Duke

UPD on my investigations here (I have this issue STABLE only then I make a first call to a "new" number for this phone).

Thanks for this link, I did the same. I opened a box and put in-out the earphones several times. It's too early to say something by 100%, but apart from before I got mute 100% first calls, I did 4 (four) call to definately "new" numbers now (2 mobile and 2 landline, sorry guys who waked by me at 8 am) and all 4 calls were OK.

Let's wait and observe...
