Ipad 2 movie rental issue..."cannot open"

I rented 2 movies for a flight last weekend, and when I went to watch them, I received an error message stating that either of the movies "cannot open". Apple did refund the rental costs, but I want to know why they didn't work in the first place. I'm running iOS 5 on my ipad. I just don't want this to happen again to me. Any advice as to what happened??

I used to be able to rent movies and watch them just fine without connecting to a network (i.e. on planes), but the last two times I've rented I've had this "Cannot Open" issue. Apple has now refunded me for 6 movies because of this issue. The techs that respond are very nice and helpful, but there's no indication that this issue is getting attention on a larger scale.


Here's the workaround I've been using: Start the movie when you're connected to a network, pause it, go to Settings and turn on Airplane Mode, board the plane, disobey the flight attendants when they tell you to turn off your electronic devices, and push play again once approved electronic devices are allowed to be used. I keep it in Airplane Mode til we land.


Not a perfect solution but it's what I got.

Apple rep told me yesterday that rented movies now need authorization from iTunes via wifi to begin or continue playing. I asked several different questions to see if he meant what he said but yes that is now the case. I hope he is wrong.


As for pausing the film and keeping your iPad on despite what airlines require, this is so not a good idea for several reasons. Not fair to others. Rules are for everyone. If there really is no danger to plane's nav systems, the rule will change.


So no more itunes rented movies on planes unless there is wifi on the plane. This is really disappointing.
