iCloud not syncing IE bookmarks from PC

iCloud not syncing IE bookmarks from PC

I don't even use IE but since the Firefox app won't open the bookmarks in Safari, I thought I'd just copy my Firefox bookmarks to IE, then use the cloud sync. (I am syncing and backing up to iCloud, and not my PC)

I did this all last night: backed up and then synced to iCloud Another thread suggested that you shut down IE so I did that. Someone else had suggested on a different thread that un-checking and re-checking the Bookmark check box in the iCloud Control panel would trigger a re-sync...did that all last night in hopes it would sync and it didn't.

I manually deleted everything in the Safari bookmarks in the Phone that it would allow, but now strangely enough in addition to the "Reading List" and "history" folders, I have TWO "Bookmarks Bar" folders with identical contents.

So I'm trying to be patient and thought maybe it takes some time for it to re-sync so I left iTunes up and running on the PC overnight...as usual....so I tried again this evening. I still have my old bookmarks on the iPhone (4S), and they've never pulled in.

Mine is still in it's default location, and I have full permissions/owner of the Favorites folder. There are items in the favorites folder and NONE appear in my book marks list, not to mention it is missing probably 40 -50% of my bookmarks and folders.

Any one have another solution that worked because this is making pretty nuts, and I am wasting time on something that should have been a 3 minute task at best.

Gee, I don't know what to tell you....I can open IE, add a folder, resync my iPhone to the iCloud, and the new folder appears. I even tried it while leaving IE open (I had read on another thread that closing it might help, but it had no adverse impact on my ability to sync).

Well, all I can suggest is to give Safari a try, or use the Firefox app (unfortunately it's a multi-step process to open a link through Safari, but that might not bother you)

Or, just run through these checkpoints one more time to make sure nothing is missed.

Are you running Windows 7 or later, and have you downloaded the iCloud Control panel for Windows?

Do you have Bookmarks turned on in iCloud settings on your iOS device?

You may have done exactly this, but if not, give this a try (and may help others in the future)

  • Deselect Bookmark syncing in the iCloud control panel on your PC.
  • Deselect iCloud Bookmarks on your iOS device. It should then prompt you to take action with the previously synced bookmarks on your device. Choose "Delete from my iPhone (or whatever delete option it gives you).
  • Sync manually to the cloud through your iOS device. You should have no bookmarks on your device.

Now turn everything back on...

  • In the iCloud control panel, re-select Bookmarks/Internet Explorer
  • on your iOS device, re-enable iCloud Bookmark Syncing
  • Now manually back up your iOS device to iCloud

Hi blackjackmark, your post is interesting.

I've "selected/de-selected" Bookmarks on all devices (including the Win iCloud Control Panel) numerous times. If I add a bookmark to an iOS device, minutes later I can walk over to my Win7-64 machine and see that bookmark sitting in my Favorites folder. The problem for me is on the reverse: when I add a bookmark to IE in Win7, it never makes its way to the iOS device. Calender & contact changes in Win7 DO work. That is, if I create a Cal entry in Outlook's calendar, minutes later, that entry shows up on my iPhone and iPad. I don't do a thing to force this. It just all happens automatically. Except for bookmarks. And it's very unfortunate that Apple removed the manual sync option from the Win control panel as it was with MobileMe (even though I shouldn't have to do that anyway). So that's not even an option.

You keep saying that you "resync your iphone to the cloud" and to "sync manually" from your iOS device. Are you saying that you *do something* to get your devices in sync? As far as I understand, it should all happen automatically without intervention from you at all. When you "add that folder" in IE, it should appear automatically on your iPhone.

Speaking of that, what is it that you do to force a manual sync on your iOS device? I don't see any option for that just like there's no option in the Win control panel.

The option to sync manually is buried in settings. To force your iOS device to re-sync to the cloud, you go into settings on your iOS device, scroll down to iCloud, and then at the bottom of iCloud, click storage and backup, and at the bottom there is a back up now button.

And yes, I agree that once everything is working fine, you have to do nothing to initiate a sync. I am just using the manual sync option to test your new settings to make sure that everything is working fine.

I hope this helps!

I switched from IE to Safari for my iCloud bookrnarks, but then I ran into an interesting/annoying quirk when using Safari on Windows to manage iCloud bookmarks.

Whenever I add, move, or edit my long list of bookmarks in Safari, the bookmarks window hangs for about 5 seconds and then automatically scrolls/jumps back to the top of my bookmarks list. This happens whenever I make any edits to my bookmarks list whatsoever.

I think Safari is uploading all my edits to iCloud after every incremental change, but unfortunately it hangs the browser for a second while doing so. It is very annoying dealing with dozens of small hangups whenever I try to edit lots of bookmakrs!

I am having the same problem: I have iCloud bookmarks turned on for my W7 PC, iPad, and iPhone. Changes made to IE bookmarks are not syncing with my iOS devices.

I was able to force my iPad bookmarks to sync with IE, however. (Interestingly, the same trick isn't working with the iPhone.) This is what I did.

iPad:

1) Go into iCloud settings and de-select bookmark syncing > Keep bookmarks on iPad

2) Turn off iPad

3) Turn on iPad

4) Go back into iCloud settings and select bookmark syncing > Merge bookmarks with iCloud

5) Turn off iPad

6) Turn on iPad

7) Sync with iTunes

This "forced" my iPad bookmarks to sync with my IE bookmarks. Now, it's possible that I didn't need to turn my iPad off at steps 2 and five. I'll experiment with that next time.

Also, as I said, this same trick hasn't worked for my iPhone yet.

I was having this problem too on Win 7 x64 machine. I believe it is a problem with permissions on the folder your bookmarks reside in.

On windows 7 your bookmarks are actually in a folder called 'Favourtes' in your user folder (Found in the start menu after clicking on your username).

First I opened the icloud control panel and disabled bookmark syncing.

For me, the cause of my permisions problem was that I had previously setup all of my user folders to be located on a server on the network (a windows domain username/password controlled folder). I don't think the icloud services could access this folder. By right clicking on the 'Favourites' folder, choose properties, then the location tab. I then clicked restore to default and followed the prompts to have it move my bookmarks back to my local drive.

I then enabled bookmark syncing from the icloud control panel, everything merged fine and it works now.

On my iphone I had disabled push (set it to completely manual) and I noticed after getting the above working, safari on the iphone would not reflect any changes IE had made until it made changes itself! So this was the only way I could initiate a manual sync. So I have set push back to on, and it reflects all changes very fast across windows and iphone even with both apps open.

Your problem might be different but in my case it was a problem with icloud not being able to access the favourites folder.

I have been trying to make my iCloud's bookmark sync between my iPhone 4 and Win 7 x64 machine for more than a week and finally, thanks for Aidan Dwyer's post, it works after i restored the Favourites folder back to default location. It is a standard practice for me to store all my Documents, Pictures, Favourites, Musics, Videos folders to D drive.

Thanks Aidan Dwyer!

Hopefully Apple will fix this issue in the next update.

I don't have a solution to the issue, but an observation that perhaps someone else can use to figure out one. I have a XP-based computer, an iPad, and my wife has an iPhone. Per earlier comments in this thread, I cannot download the iCloud Control Panel because of XP. Quite honestly, we never even thought about Bookmarks syncing until last night when I broke down and bought an iPhone. Low and behold, my IE Favorites synced without consciously doing anything!

Now my curiosity was picqued as to why they weren't syncing on my wife's phone or our iPad. I tried everything in this and other threads with no luck. What I did notice however, is when I look at the Info tab for my iPhone in iTunes, I have an option that say "Sync Bookmarks to" and a dropdown box that says "Internet Explorer", and that option is checked. The other two devices don't have that option. In the same place on the Info tab in iTunes, it simply has a statement that says "Bookmarks - Your bookmarks are being synced over the air from the cloud. Over the air settings can be your iPhone/iPad." The settings are correct on both my wife's phone and the iPad.

Hope this helps connect the dots for someone else following this topic.
