AirPlay works, AirPlay Mirroring Does Not (iPad 2, Apple TV 2nd Gen, iOS 5)

All,

Been searching around a bit. Net, I cannot get AirPlay mirroring to work. When I say "work," that is what I mean. As you will read below, AirPlay itself works, but AirPlay mirroring does not, as a matter of fact, I cannot even get the slider that asks to turn on AirPlay Mirroring to appear in the AirPlay menu.

Here is what I know from debug:

1) Apple TV is at latest software version (selecting "Software Update" from menu reports "Your Apple TV is Up to Date")

2) iPad 2nd Gen was updated to iOS5 last evening

3) Did hard power off of both iPad and unplugged and replugged Apple TV (no changes to issue after this)

4) AirPlay for Music from iPad2 to Apple TV works

5) Remote App on iPad2 Successfully controls the Apple TV

6) Air Play mirroring button (to far left of all the icons that appear after double click on home button) is there:

a. Clicking the Air Play button lists: the iPad, AppleTV, and my AirPort express

b. There is no slider in this menu to select Mirroring, even after AppleTV is selected. (I suspect this is the problem, but can't figure out how to fix it)

7) Apple TV can see my iMac and stream pictures, music, and video from it.

8) iMac running iTunes (10.5) can use AirPlay button to send music to AppleTV with no issues

My conclusions from the debug work I have done so far:

i) All the devices "see" one another on the netowrk or I wouldn't be able to send music and pictures to, or use the remote app to control the AppleTV

ii) Seems like iPad doesn't know it can actually do the video mirroring

A little about my setup:

a) Network in home is provided by Linksys WRT54G connected to the cable modem on WAN side.

b) On LAN side, its a combo of:

  • wireless network created by WRT54G (network "A")
  • wired ethernet to an AirPort express (which creates 2nd wireless network, "B")
  • wired ethernet to devices (not AppleTV)
  • and wired ethernet to a switch, to additional devices (Tivo and AppleTV)
  • c) None of these devices have ever experienced communication problesm before, and I don't think they are having them now (see debug steps 4-8)

    d) iPad was connected to wireless network created by WRT54G (Network "A")

    e) Switching iPad to the AirPort express wireless network (Netowrk "B") had no affect.

    f) iMac is connected to wireless network created by AirPort express (Network "B") but is able to send Music/Pictures To and See AppleTV (From AirPlay icon in iTunes -- PUSH; or have data streamed from it using AppleTV menu -- PULL)

Looks like your Apple TV is not actually up to date. Mine said the same thing, "Your Apple TV is up to Date", but when I checked it was still at version 4.3. Try hooking it up to your computer with a micro USB and restore the device. You will lose your settings, but if you're like me, the only settings I have in there are my wifi credentials (so make sure you have the remote handy to re-enter those, as your iphone or ipad won't connect until the wifi is back).

I'm doing it right now, (I had identical problems), I'll let you know if it works.

    That worked for me.

    To recap:

My Apple TV was telling me I had the latest update, but it was wrong. I had version 4.3, you need version 4.4 for Airplay to work. I took the Apple TV over to my computer and connected it with a microUSB cable. In iTunes I hit restore.

The first time I did this I got an "Unknown error 1602" message and the restore failed. I rebooted my computer and used a different USB port and tried again. Whohoo! Success this time!. Now I have version 4.4.1 on my Apple TV and the Airplay "Mirroring" slider is there and working.

    Thanks for your help!

Just spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support. Turns out that they have had "overloading" issues since the release of the iPhone 4S and that they update server for Apple TV has actually been "shut off". She suggested checking back in a couple of days, and then when you click "Update Software" under Settings / General it will connect to the Server and update. Currently because the server is not online, it will say that the software is up to date, even though it is still 4.3, instead of the current 4.4.1.

Well, that explains why even after the restore, I am only at 4.3. You guys that managed to get to 4.4, when did you do your updates?

<rant>OK, if that is really the case, Apple, then why don't you POST A MESSAGE SOMEWHERE so we all know that one of the highly anticipated features of the recent OS release in currently only half released? </rant>

I just updated mine to 4.4.1 today. Like everyone else, when I tried it from the Apple TV menu I was told it was up to date when it was really only version 4.3. But when I connected it to my computer and did the restore in iTunes the upgrade worked.

So if you don't want to wait it might work for you if you connect it to your computer. It worked for me this afternoon.

I got my Apple TV delivered today. I am also having the same issue - No airplay mirroring button on ipad2 though airplay button is present. I restored my Apple TV with the latest update but still not able to see mirroring button. The only reason I bought Apple TV is for the mirroring feature. From this discussion thread I can understand the issue. But not sure why company like apple is shipping products with old software and shutting down the server to manage load. Never expected this from Apple.

Unclear to me they actually shut down the server, actually.

Post here says Firmware 4.4.1 was released October 18 that "Addresses an issue that required a small number of Apple TV users to be connected to iTunes in order to complete the update."

I submitted an express lane support ticket on this, Apple is scheduled to call me tomorrow morning.

I believe this FIX still won't successuflly get installed on AppleTV until I connect my unit to iTunes, which is going to require me to purchase a micro USB cable. Will report more tomorrow on my findings.
