Well, at least I can confirm that I'm not going crazy! I have had the exact problem since updating my and my wife's phone to iOS 5.0, with no improvement after complete restore, and nothing better on 5.01. Will usually go through the "Searching..." phase every 2 hours, and if I notice it, toggling Airplane mode fixes it. Every morning I awake to see the "Searching..." signal staring me in the face. I just tonight realized it was related to the Microcell, and since turning it off, things have been back to their normal (terrible) 3G signal.

Definitely disappointed that 5.01 hasn't fixed the problem, I love the new iOS too much to switch back to 4, besides -- who uses these for phones, anyway?!

Hoping someone comes up with a fix soon!

Just wanted to +1.

My iPhone 4 reverts to "searching..." every other hour or so due to the microcell. I've done everything under the sun to try to isolate the issue (power cycle everything, restore, re-seat SIM, re-activate accounts... on and on) and nothing fixes it beyond removing the MicroCell from the mix. And like others have stated, I can make and recieve calls despite "searching..." being in the display. When I do, the display reverts back to "M-Cell". But give it a few hours, and it flips back to "searching...".

Upgrading iOS to 5.01 made no difference.

I was having the same problem then decided to try to make a call while the phone was "searching" and after a couple of seconds, m-cell showed at the top of the phone and the signal bars went to full and the phone dialed out with a clear signal. I did the same thing when I had just one bar away from the m-cell and the signal increased and had a clear conversation. Give it a try!

I've done the following it has appeared to have cleared my issues. Not sure if this is 100% solution but its been working for me for a few days and haven't seen the "Searching issue" on my Iphone 4

1) I turned my iphone off completely and removed the sim card

2) I logged into my att account and removed the mcell completely.

3) I unplugged the Mcell and I waited 30 minutes and then reregistered the Mcell again in my ATT account (had to readd #'s that connected to it)

4) Somewhere after reregistering it I inserted my sim and turned my phone back on.

5) Received an email saying my activation is completed and looked at my phone and it was connected.

Since doing this I haven't seenthe "Searching" issue on My iphone 4 runnin IOS 5.0.0 seems to be connected to MCell and working without any issues. I opted not to upgrade to 5.0.1 while its working fine now.

i see everyone posting about this issue when using a iphone 4 upgraded to ios 5 or 5.0.1 but im having the issue on my iphone 4s as well as my wifes iphone 4. and i wish it was just saying searching hers will go to no service for hours and mine will be just find on 5 bars. we have also done the whole reset deal with at&t. we can be sitting next to each other and she will get a call from my parents wanting to talk to me and my phone is at no service and hers is fine. so it has to be what? cant figure this out but i know it ***** after upgrading to 5.0+

AT&T has confirmed through a ticket item that iOS5 is not compatible with the MicroCell, and no phone 3GS-4S will work on it until updates are made to iOS. They are basically leaving it up to Apple to resolve the issue- typical AT&T-- how about telling us before we upgrade or buy new phones!!!

I hope that others try the steps I performed above. I have 2 Iphone 4's running IOS 5.0.1 and both connect to MCell without any issues NOW, after I did my above steps. So saying that IOS 5 is not compatible with the MicroCell obviously not true if both my phones work. It maybe true that this is a BUG somewhere between the MicroCell or in IOS 5.

True or Not... I am just repeating what an engineer at AT&T told me. It was not some CSR as I refuse to deal with any AT&T call center reps. This guy calls me every three days to update me on thier research into my problem, he stated it comes down to the Cisco MicroCell that AT&T sells is not compatible with iOS 5. If it was obviously not true.. why hasn't AT&T been able to help the bulk of us?
