What is "Other" on the iPad's Storage (iOS 5)?

User uploaded file

After upgrading to iOS 5, I'm seeing multiple gigabytes being taking up by what is qualified as "other." What exactly is this? I am not carrying any music, movies, books, photos, etc on my iPad 2 (32GB WiFi + 3G). Anyone have any idea what is in this "other" category and how to remove it?

The only way I got my other down to 0 was to backup then basically start again and do a complete restore. It wipes your iPad but you just go through the process of adding everything again (like you did when you first got it). It's a pain but it was the only way I could reduce the other. It will go back up but mine was reduced from 1/2 my 64GB capacity to basically nothing. When it goes back up again I will repeat the process again.

Hope that helps.

Same here, I tried alsorts to shift this and the only thing thats works is to do a restore as everyone has said.

I managed to delete a years worth of data entrys in numbers on a restore that was surpose to back up all my data!?

Time to fix the "other" glitch please Apple or give us something else like a delete button? delete cach? I dunno anything but a restore.

I watch a film a day on my 16Gig ipad and its not long before I have to do another restore.

Any way moan over! other than that the ipad rules! loving Adobe ideas right now.

I had 770 MB of space shown as "Others". I recalculated and found out that apps-1.49 gb space shown is apps installation space .It is not the extra space used. The extra space used by apps is shown in "Others",which was about 200 MB. Emails, browsing, cache too take up some space .When I deleted them (full email account), I was able to free up 150 MB of space from others and the new space taken up by Others is now 590 mb (200 mb of space by apps included). Restoring temporarily solves the problem.Try to find out the unaccounted space encroached by apps , emails, browser , and cache.

Yes I could not free up the space from "Others " fully. But somewhat I could.

So before restoring try some tweaks, as given by the forum users ,and look into the apps and email. They take up extra space and you will never know but "Others" will give you a hint.

Hi All

Quite a simple fix. Download iExplore which will enable you to look inside an apple device and see all the folders. Our issue was high 'other storage after deleating photos. Once inside i noticed ther were still over 5gb of thumbnails even though there were no photos! Deleated these and other went down to around 0.6gb reasonable. A quick search through the folders should highlight where the 'other' is just delete it provided you are sure it is the cause.

Mine was up to 10gb of "Other" on my 32gb iPad. Tried the aforementioned trick of connecting USB, turning of iPad, turning it back on. It took about 3-4 minutes after it was back up, but Other went away and I now have 10gb more free space. In some cases, it must be alot of temp files that build up or something. I never turn mine off; guess I will more often now.

BTW, for me, I put movies on mine quite often for use on a plane, then delete them when I'm done. Not sure if this may contribute to why mine was so full of temp files.

Hi All,

I have been facing the same issue and found a solution that does not require a full restore!

Its seems to be related with the music synchronization mechanism

Here is a link to a very usefull documentation that describe what I did to resolve my issue!

Oh. My. Word. I've been struggling with this for weeks! Had tried all the suggestions above - after a restore, the "Other" went down to about 2.1GB, but slowly crept back up to 4+GB.

Then I tried the suggestion in the ipodrebublic link.... this was on my iPad, where I don't even *have* any music!! I use iTunes Match, but may have had some actual music on there at some point.

Anyway, for the first time in weeks, my "other" is 0.26GB!! Hurrah!! 😀

Thanks Alan.

VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION! NO NEED TO RESTORE! Connect your Ipad/Iphone/Ipod to your computer. After that, click on "on this iphone/ipad/ipod" at the top. After that, there will be a list that says:

Music

Movies

tv shows

books

When you click on "Tv shows" for example, you may find 6 episodes that arent even on your iphone/ipad/ipod/ but they are taking up space! This is exactly what happened to me, I had 7 episodes of homeland on the "tv shows" even though I deleted them on my iphone, they were still taking up space!!! right click (for PC) or control click(for mac) on all the movies and tv shows and music you dont want! and your "other" will be drastically reduced! You may think all those things are just purchased items that arent on your iphone/ipad/ipod , but they take up space!

i have a pretty obvious solution to this that I have not seen in the other posts.

I had 16 gbs of "other" taken up. That's a lot!

I went back and looked at my camera roll and saw a video that I had shot with the iPad of a lecture that was 1 1/2 hours long. I couldn't get any more information. I then exported it to my mac using iPhoto. Even in iPhoto I could not see the real size. So I copied it to my desktop and there I saw that one video was 14 gbs! I removed it from my iPad, restarted, and now the "other" is down to 2 gbs.

So beware of videos that you have created using the iPad's camera. They are huge! And are apparently listed under "other."
