iMessage sending sms to UK

I have an iPhone 3GS on iOS 5 in France with Numéricable as carrier and Bouygues as network.

I'm currently using iMessage with few people in France and USA.

I noticed on my phone bill 15 SMS to UK. And I don't know anybody in UK. So I think it's iMessage sending text to UK to come back to France when it needs to activate again, 15 times!

I don't think it's texts I sent since the hours does not correspond, and it would be silly to send texts to UK then back to France, and overall I've dislable the option : send SMS if iMessage is unavailable.

Anyone has the same problem or a solution to it as iPods don't have sim cards!

Merci!

I had the same problem. It appeared to send an SMS to the UK whenever I tried to activate iMessage. Once I turned this feature off, the UK SMS' stopped.

I called Apple support about this but after being left on hold for over an hour, and talking to 3 people who had no idea whatsoever about how their own product works, I gave up.

I called Apple hotline too, and a man who bearly speaks french and english made me wait 15min and said that it's ONE (I have now more than 20) SMS to UK to activate FaceTime (I have a 3GS with apparently no camera on the front and I was talking about iMessage!)

I tought it was happening when I swith to airplane mode at night, so I didn't swith to airplane mode last night, but still few SMS sent to UK!! That's crazy!

Kev Dev, where are you? France?

Same problem here in Spain. Mi iPhone 3GS sent 16 SMS to UK over four days, at 0,60€ each one (+tax). The first one was sent just after installing iOS 5 (that's OK), but the rest were sent with no reason. From the sending times I can see that a SMS was sent whenever I took my iPhone from airplane mode early each morning, but the iPhone kept on sending more SMS after that, and without any intervention on my part.

My carrier (a MVNO) is Euskaltel, which uses the Vodafone network, and works flawlessly with my iPhone for both voice and data. Since it is not one of the "officially" supported carriers (which are Movistar, Vodafone and Orange in Spain), there are no specific carrier settings (Settings->General->Information->Carrier shows "Carrier 11.0"). I wonder if this fact could be related to this problem.

¡Apple, you owe me 11,20€!

iMessage does get activated on my iPhone, including the phone number. The problem is that it gets deactivated randomly after that, and then it tries to reactivate itself again, sending another SMS. And that happens over and over again.

After being hit by this problem, I activated iMessage again, and when the alert "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate iMessage" appeared, I tapped "Cancel". Then the activation proceeded anyway, but only for receiving iMessages at my e-mail address(es). I cannot receive iMessages sent to my phone number, but iMessage works fine otherwise. No more SMS and no more random deactivations.

You're right, I think the random deactivation is the problem, but when I do what you say, I don't have the pop-up screen that notify me, so I'm going to restore my iPhone, and in the set up, I'll put no iMessage, and activate it afterwards with only my email adress in airplane mode (like an iPod)

Keep you posted, I can only see the SMS send a day later.

I have just upgraded to an iPhone 4S from my previous 3GS, using the same SIM (a micro SIM duplicated from the original SIM I was using with the 3GS), and after restoring the backup and activating both iMessage and FaceTime on the new 4S everything worked fine. I only got the initial warning about the possible charges for the needed SMS.

Maybe this problem only happens when using an iPhone 3G/3GS? That should be really weird.

I also, have an iPhone 3GS on iOS 5 in France with Numericable as carrier and Bouygues as network.

iMessage activation didn't work on my iPhone and I've been billed for 82 SMS sent to a UK number (0044753741XXXX). It seems to come from the iMessage activation process that failed many times.

Numericable is very fair and promises to get me the money back but... take care
