Upgrade to iphoto 11 crashing - solutions not working?

So, I've really tried to read all the posts out there, and many are old. I only needed to upgrade iPhoto to 11 because I wanted to use Photostream.

Downloaded from the App Store and executed first on my MacBook. Went fine.

Downloaded from App Store to my iMac and it's in a dire situation.

First, I had an old program called Keyword Manager installed and it said it was incompatible and would be disabled. I researched and found out how to unistall it and did that. It says it needs to upgrade the library - does the initial evaluation and begins the upgrade - crashes in about 30 seconds. Does this repeatedly.

Now, I had already deleted the 3ivx program because I heard it was a problem with Photostream - but did I possibly need it to upgrade the library?

Then I read to remove the Divx programs - I pulled those into TRash but do I need to completely delete? (And what implications will that have for other programs I have?)

My iPhoto library is on an external hard drive - and it is 240 GB, so no small task. I just backed it up, but unfortunately I wasn't backing up my apps in Time Machine so I don't have that easily available to get back to iPhoto 09 - I might have the disk somewhere?

But I need to get to 11 so I can use photostream?

Help - thanks!

Wow - Did what just happen that I think happened? Because of the mention of a nonapple product?

Anyway, assuming this posts, I am midway through the process and it seems to be loading photos into iPhoto 11.

Watching it go - is "Restoring Photo Attributes" when it's applying changes if it's a Modified image? And, it seems to only be importing events by date - will I lose all the old Event names or any batch photo renames (or time) because they weren't attached to the actual photo files?

Just trying to figure it out - but it seems to be tracking along. Hopefully I'll be using iPhoto 11 in no time!

PS I have a separate iPhoto 11 library now on my Macbook - I can use THIS solution to bring those together, right?

No. You can mention any product you like - Keyword Manager Word, MySQL whatever. What is happening is that there is a severe glitch on the forum for the past week or so, where posts can take several hours to show up. However, if you reply to a post it shows up, oddly. So, while the main page tells me you have replied I have to go into the thread, reply (I just type a period) and then when that posts, I can see what you've written. Then I edit my reply with the actual reply.

I believe "restoring Photo attributes" is about making sure that the database has the correct metadata.

Ugh - Been *a lot* of hours and I'm still in the process. It annoyingly stopped importing when it found a duplicate which prevented it from running continuously unless I was sitting in front of it. (In the end, I used my LogMeIn app on my iPad and watched the iMac from downstairs!)

Anyway, now it's updating the thumnails.

SO, here's what I discovered along the way. There were 4 files that it wouldn't import into the rebuilt library at all and I believe they were all avi files.

Then, there were 19 "events" that crashed iPhoto 11, so iPhoto Library Manager would ask me if I wanted to "skip" them (or continue which would make it try again) - I skipped them and noted them down.

These are all events that I know were fine in iPhoto 09 - is there just something in there, one photo or file that is a problem? How can I regain access to those 19 events?

Thanks - I'll keep you updated when I finally finish!

Oct 21, 2011 11:18 PM in response to akcorcoran

Oh. my. Well, that took a LONG TIME!

Finally finished this evening - didn't anticipate all the time it would take b/c it went back to rebuild the thumbnails, then the Faces, and that was for a lot of photos!

Anyway, OK, so I think in the end, I have two issues: (for reference "Big Dog My Book" is the external drive where my iPhoto Library previously lived!)

1) There were 19 Events that had problems - during the rebuild process, it would say the event would crash iPhoto and then give me the option to "skip" or "continue" (try again) - I skipped and recorded the Event name. I put some of the error log below but it's REALLY long. It basically says that either: "No match found in destination directory" or "Missing photo" or "Missing file"

I can't quite figure out why because they were fine before in iPhoto 9? What should I do to try to recover these? Obviously the photos are still there in "Original" and "Modified"? Should I try to re-import somehow (either with iPhoto Library or directly?) Is there a bad photo - or something I could look for?

And, when I look at the errors, there is only ONE event where it lists *every* photo - this Halloween album. Could that be at the root of something?

One other thought (and I know I shouldn't wonder!) is whether I accidentally saved a file INTO the iPHoto library folder from Photoshop accidentally and that threw off each of these events. I try to never do that but know there's been a couple occasions where Photoshop (my external editor) pulls up the folder within the Modified or Originals and I've accidentally hit save. Maybe if I find that's the case and remove them, even the original upgrade might be OK?

It ends up being about 4,500 pictures (that's double the actual amount of photos though I think b/c of the original and modified structure) - I'd like to be sure I have them.

2) It looks llike iPhoto 11 (or something with my set up) doesn't like AVI files. Or maybe iPhoto Library just doesn't move movie files? I put a copy of the log below but the files are there - they aren't "missing" in the original iphoto library, but they say they're "missing" in the log. While it's a slight bummer, I can live with that b/c I have the video files. Maybe it had something to do with the thumnail vs the video? At any rate, I've got the names of the files - I can find/convert the AVI files (it was my old camera.)

Thanks for your help -

Then there are a BUNCH of these - I haven't tracked them all back but I'm guessing they go with the different Events that I had to skip - it does say OSStatus error - 1708 - what's that mean?
