Upgrade to iphoto 11 crashing - solutions not working?

So, I've really tried to read all the posts out there, and many are old. I only needed to upgrade iPhoto to 11 because I wanted to use Photostream.

Downloaded from the App Store and executed first on my MacBook. Went fine.

Downloaded from App Store to my iMac and it's in a dire situation.

First, I had an old program called Keyword Manager installed and it said it was incompatible and would be disabled. I researched and found out how to unistall it and did that. It says it needs to upgrade the library - does the initial evaluation and begins the upgrade - crashes in about 30 seconds. Does this repeatedly.

Now, I had already deleted the 3ivx program because I heard it was a problem with Photostream - but did I possibly need it to upgrade the library?

Then I read to remove the Divx programs - I pulled those into TRash but do I need to completely delete? (And what implications will that have for other programs I have?)

My iPhoto library is on an external hard drive - and it is 240 GB, so no small task. I just backed it up, but unfortunately I wasn't backing up my apps in Time Machine so I don't have that easily available to get back to iPhoto 09 - I might have the disk somewhere?

But I need to get to 11 so I can use photostream?

Help - thanks!

Hi TD -

One more question - I need to now upgrade to Lion and then can convert to iCloud (which is what started this whole mess!) Would you recommend importing the photos that are missing before I do those changes or after?

I'm not sure what to do about versions - I edit my photos in Photoshop and usually touch virtually every one of them (my blue-eyed kids and husband have red eye virtually every time and I prefer the Photoshop editing for that to iPhotos) - so I really need the modified. Maybe I'll pick through and pull modified for all I edited and then the originals if unchanged. Argh - that will take a while!

Thx again for your help -

OK - thanks. Unfortunately for me, for 4,000+ photos, redoing the edits is not an option. It's why this whole thing is so frustrating - and I think I've handled it pretty well! That's why I was still clinging to the idea of removing an offending file and be able to import an old event as it was b/c it would have kept the old original/modified structure, but alas - you've told me to forget about it. I'm trying! 😉

Allright - back to iphoto restoration!

The problem here is that I *really* need to get to iCloud b/c my husband upgraded thus cutting me off of all of our shared calendars. I've upgraded my MacBook to Lion and iPhoto 11 but my iMac isn't ready b/c of all this. I've asked elsewhere but received no response as to whether I can go to iCloud on one computer and not the other for a few days but I'm afraid the answer is no b/c they'll get out of sync. Sigh.

Thanks for all your help -

OH - one more question and then I promise I'm done! - I was thinking this would be the time to use iPhoto Library merge my iPhoto from my MacBook with the iPhoto on the iMac (once it is clean and happy and both are on iPhoto 11) - would you recommend doing that too before going to Lion?

Or, get both to iPhoto 11, upgrade to Lion on both, then merge the libraries?

Beyond that, I was even thinking of using iPhoto Library to split the libraries so I tuck away maybe events/photos from 1999 (scanned prints) to 2006 so I'm not always dealing with such a large, cumbersome (and now vulnerable!) library.

Thx -

I am having a similar problem converting over to iphoto11. The wheel keeps spinning. Does anyone know how long it takes iphoto to convert the iphoto library. My file is about 121Gb.

I have tried various solutions listed on the boards, but still no success. I did not have the 3ivx codec on my computer. Any other codec that could be causing this problem.

I am tempted to going back to the old iphoto. Anyone know how I can get an older version.

Thanks

OK, thanks TD - Hopefully I'll only be back to give an "all clear!" progress report. Appreciate it!

PS to svs59 - I think you need the dmg or the disc - but my philosophy in going through all this pain is that Apple is only go forward, not move back. So, even if you wait on photostream (if that's your motivation), you'll have to upgrade eventually. And, even with Photostream, I'm happy waiting until they get the bugs worked out (assuming they do usually get around to it!), but eventually upgrading iPhoto 09 will only become more problematic. sigh. I feel your pain!
