can't sync my voice memos in playlists

I have an iPhone 4. I recently updated my operating system to iOS5. My iTunes is updated to 10.5. In the past I have been able to create voice memos, successfully sync them, successfully move them to particular playlists I have set up in iTunes, and then successfully sync them again to appear on my phone in specific categories. I noticed today that not all the songs I have checked in my playlists are syncing. More specifically, this is occuring with the voice memos that I moved into my playlists. As an experiment, I tried saving the voice memos as mp3s. That seemed to work, but I don't want to assume that I'm going to have to convert every voice memo to an mp3 in order to see it again! I also noticed that every voice memo on my computer has been duplicated. Why is this happening? Thanks for any assistance!!

I'm having the same issue of putting voice memos into playlists, and then they won't sync back to my iPhone. I'm also running iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5. Here's another clue to the mystery:

I noticed that when I looked at the "other" memory on the iPhone summary page, it was quite large (>5 Gb). Strangely, it would periodically grow about by the size of the playlist I was trying to sync. After a lot of tinkering around, I used the DiskAid app to peer into the guts of my phone and discovered that everytime my phone tried to auotmatically sync from my computer, those voice memos were being written to the /Recordings folder on the root of the phone.

The "recordings" folder is where the phone stores voice memos that you've recorded until you delete them from your phone. Since iTunes is syncing the files to the "recordings" folder, that's why they aren't showing up in the itunes library on my phone (and why, in iTunes, they show up as gray...iTunes thinks it's synced them, but can't find them)

And since the "voice memos" app didn't put them there, it doesn't recognize them either. So they're stuck in limbo.

Meanwhile, everytime my phone syncs with the mac, itunes tries to copy them back to the phone, and my "Other" memory grows and grows until my phone is full.

I don't know why it's happening, but I've recreated it many times in the past week. I thought I'd share and see if anyone else has seen similar behavior.

I am having the same problem. I have tried to sync my voice memos on my iPhone (iOS 5) and my iPad 2 (iOS 5) and it synced about 1/4th of all of my voice memos. The rest will show up in the device/music with a sync icon to the left. I do have the "include voice memos" box checked for each device.

I tried to change the media type on ALL of my voice memos to "Music" but the problem still exists. I don't want to have to restore my devices..

Any solutions Apple?

Yup! I've had it selected the whole time. In fact, as part of y experiments, I tried unchecking it.

When the box is unchecked, iTunes does *not* attempt to sync the voice memos that are in a separate playlist, and the "other" memory is untouched.

When the box is checked, iTunes attempts to sync the memos, and they are written to the "recordings" folder, rather than to the iTunes library, as expected. Since the files to to the recordings folder, my other memory increases.

I just organized my library(file-> library -> organize library), and then when i looked for the file in the music folder, I was able to right click on it and create an AAC version of it no problem. With the AAC version, just drag and drop it into your iphone folder you desire and it will sync. Just be careful of which file you choose, the AAC file will have the same name just a differnet time stamp on it.

hope this helps.

I have the same "other" problem. Is there a way to work around this? I was able to make all my old voice memos into mp3s (you can do it en masse) and then put them in the playlist and they synced. My problem now is that I can't get my new voice memos from my phone to itunes (I think because of the limbo thing you're talking about).

Trimming them doesn't help. Changing them from memo to music makes them greyed out I think. Grr... so frustrating!
