If the person I am calling is on another call, rather than saying 'engaged' or 'busy', it just keeps ringing.
People have called me back saying they were on another call etc. so I know that they were in fact engaged.... Is there a way I can change it so that I can tell when the other person is engaged?

When I call someone that is on another call, the ring sounds different indicating the person is on another call.
Doubtful. They have call waiting, which means they have the option of putting the person they are talking to on hold and taking your call if they choose. They apparently chose to just call you back instead.
But is there a notification for me to know that they are on call ... or I have to listen thoroughly for the sound of the ringing?
Apparently, some Nokia phones, on some carriers, will provide a message that the person who is being called is on another call. This is not a common feature. Carriers may provide some type of audilbe indication, as Tim mentioned. With my carrier, there is a very noticible beep at the end of the ring.
I remain unclear as to why people are so concerned about getting this information. Either the person is unavailable or they have chosen not to talk to you at that time. If they didn't want to talk to you, they may be telling you they were on another call to avoid hurting your feelings.
