Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

Adter installing IOS 5 my Ipad 1 slows down considerably. Apps take time to start and especially the writing is so slow that I actually I cannot use the Pad anyomore. I udgraded only because I could not update imoorstant apps (keypad, pages) anymore with the old operating system. But this is no solution. Anyone elseexperiencing this problem or am I the only one?

I have the same problem, my iPad is much slower than before in all aspects. Another thing i do not like is how Safari is now. The former version with the screens is much nicer, now it looks like Explorer.

Thanks so much for the tips, TradeMaster! I've tried the suggestions of tunring of some of the icloud sync, and it seems to help somewhat. But it is still not running as smooth as when I was using iOS4. In addition, the language input method still has the problem of sitting there and thinking about what you have input for a long while before returning any characters for you to choose. In any case, at this moment I will take that little performance improvement for now until Apple does something. Like I said, my great experience of using iPad have just got reduced down to the point of where I am feeling like I am using some PC/Windows based devices. I thought I switch over to Apple for a different expeirence but now...

I am having the same problem with my iPad 1 too. Extremely slow after the update: typing takes ages now; safari keeps crashing (even when I was typing this); iBook is very slow with PDF taking ages to load; I can't even play with angry birds anymore.

I'm becoming an angry bird myself now because this has already happened with my iPhone 3. Upgrading the software should improve the performance of our machines and not kill them so that we then buy the next release. If this is their marketing strategy it won't last very long and people will start soon realising that.

I'm very disappointed. I like my apple products but I didn't expect this happening from apple...I hope they will take into account these comments and do something to fix this problem.

I don't care about iCloud anymore. My iPad performance is far more important than its ability to synchronise apps and documents.

Apple please listen to your devoted customers.

Thanks

Had the same problem but I seem to have improved things. Try this:

1. Go to Settings and close down all iCloud services you can do without for the moment.

2. Double-click the menu button and go through and close every application.

3. Give the iPad a hard restart by holding the menu button and the power button down simultaneously for ten seconds until the iPad reboots.

By doing this I've seem my newly-loaded applications return to their previous speed (though I fear I may have to do it regularly). iCould appears to be the biggest culprit which is a bit of a pain given that it's the core-offering if iOS5.

And yes, I am actively thinking about getting an iPad2 as a result. More than ever the iPad experience needs that A5 chip. I feel a bit cheated about that, really.

Regrettably, I must add my voice to this chorus. Since the iOS 5 update, my iPad 1 has to "think" for a while after opening nearly any app before I can do anything. I often have to open my mail app twice, because it crashes the first time. Some third party apps (e.g., my beloved NPR app) won't work at all.

Yes I accepted the new terms of service.

Yes this problem was occuring before I moved to the cloud.

I won't say that my iPad is totally unusable, but it is totally frustrating, and its value to me is seriously (but hopefully temporarily?) degraded.

Echoing the same thing as everyone else here. Slowed down almost to the point of completely unusable. Can't type a full sentence without tremendous lag. Word lookups are terribly slow, typing is filled with mistakes, most apps crash on first launch, Safari is barely usable, and the whole reason I bought my iPad--to use OmniGroup apps--has been basically chucked out with garbage. I now have a $1000 paperweight. I would have expected better from Apple, but I have to say, this is by far the worst experience I've had with Apple in ten years. I use this thing every single day for business, and my productivity just went down the crapper with this. Very disappointed Apple. Please fix this. Please, I beg you.

As I mentioned, I'm definitely not happy with my iPad experience now, but how about we use this thread to get solutions, and for newcomers to report their actual experience? I don't think it will help our cause much to mud-sling Apple, or to suggest that they did this deliberately to make us buy an iPad 2... that would be a tactic that isn't in Apple's character, and it really doesn't help us move forward either.

I think most people here are people who love their iPad 1, and don't regret making the decision to buy it, even though it was a brand new, and potentially risky product for us to buy. Hopefully our purchase numbers are enough to get Apple's attention to make this a priority to resolve for us. I fully intend to buy the iPad 3 when it comes out, but I need my iPad 1 to perform for two years before I do.

It seems that disabling some or most iCloud features does add a small boost in speed. I also found that making sure that the voice feedback from autocorrect is turned off helps a little. I would guess that turning off autocorrect completely would offer some boost as well, but autocorrect fixes things for me more often than it causes hilarity in wrong word guesses.

Does anyone else have any settings they've found that might help to pacify the problem until Apple can release an OS update with some fixes?

I suffer from a similar problem especially with Mail. It crashes sometimes in mid composition.

Sometimes my carefully composed mail just disappears. Unlike in the web based Gmail which automatically backs up the Drafts.

Trying to finds alternative Mail program App.

Also Safari very slow now.

How can we get Apple support?

I think I will try the local Apple Store and actually go there.

I doubt whether their reps read all these postings
