Ipad 1 slows down after installing IOS 5

I have the same question. I would really appreciate if somebody could tell me how to download the iOS 4.3 to an iPad 1.Mine is really slow and it is so frustrating. 😟 I want to fix it as soon as possible so I can enjoy my iPad in its full capacity again.

If you have a version earlier than 4.3, you can only update to the latest version, 5.1.1. If you have a version later than 4.3, you cannot downgrade. Downgrading is not supported.

You can google for "downgrade ios 5.0.1 to 4.3.3". Good luck!!

Hi. I can confirm that the DFU restore does work. Set it up as a new ipad. It Maybe short term, but it does.

The keyboard lag is almost non existent now unless I'm installing or downloading something.

It's given me a few more months of life on this forgotten beast at least.

It may be caused by a fragmented SSD or maybe a 'fresh install' just helps.

Remember to keep notifications at a minimum and you can also turn off iMessage (if you don't use it) to free up a bit more ram (so I heard)

"pretty sad when a 900.00 device is no longer supported <3 years after it was purchased" -- I totally agree and have decided to not buy a new iPad in forever. Same thing happened with old intel macs and Snow Leopard but was not as widely reported because of a smaller base who also tend to upgrade for performance reasons. I am totally cynical about Apple software 'upgrades' now and will not install them unless I absolutely require them.

Like I said in an earlier posting, sell it and use the cash to help finance a new one. I sold my original iPad and used the cash to get an iPad 3. I did the same and recently bought an iPad 4...and you guessed it, I'll do the same and get the next new iPad. Apple will EOL products to usher in new ones on a regular basis. This has been true throughout their history. It's sometimes a hard pill to swallow, but once you realize that it's not going to change, you have to create a strategy to deal with it. That's how I deal with it for both iPad and iPhone. I recently sold my Intel iMac with the Core Duo CPU for $500 on Craigslist. Using that cash, I'm in the final stages of my Hackingtosh build. I could easily say I'll never buy another Apple product, but who am I kidding, there is no substitute!

Hey, try to disable iCloud and the not-needed apps in notification center. I now see a big performance increase!

Thank you for this advice. Disabling iCloud and turning off apps in the Notification center, plus clearing the Safari cache helped. Still not blazing fast, but better. Thanks again.

btw, you can try to disable iMessage, too.

I feel exactly same thing and wondering to get iPad 2 or higher. Apple should make another IOS for iPad 1 user because I feel it is going slower every day and yes it helps after stop the notification and iCloud. It makes my trust less and u can not even downgrade to lower iOS. Anyway, thnx for other post so now I feel that my iPad is not only one slower and there are so many users are with me for same issue.

after searching this forum and others I can now deal with it.

true at times it seems that the iPad is so slow or the Mail crashes-

but its rare!

So please search on the Web and on Apple Forums.

I originally went to the Apple Store, and the kind chap there reinstalled the OS.

Later- I used and still use a Process Killer App, which clears the RAM.

Its no longer in the App Store, but I have it, and there may be others.

Next, I frequently empty the background running apps.

This as most iPad users know, is by pressing the Home button twice, rapidly in succession, then

leaving the finger tip on one of the icons. from there its easy to delete.

no multitasking!

Also its important to clean up Safari frequently on the Settings. including Advanced and Website Data.

I am happy with the ipad 1.

Nope your not the only one!

I was having trouble getting any webpage to load in under a minute. it was just really really slow for some reason.

I just went into settings on a whim, clicked on Safari and then changed my search engine from google to bing and that seemed change everything. my iPad is reunning super fast now.

That's a really cool tip - chaging to Bing -

I just did this on the MBP the other day - being too many times lately - input a search - Safari crashes.

With plenty of RAM left to not be an issue.

Now on my iPad 1 -

When I saw the new update to 5.0 - I came here first - Back when only ten people were having an issue -

I'll never go past 4.3.3.

Until I see a live demo that all works fine to 5.1 - then maybe, but not until then.

I started with Apple in 05 - from MacPro all the way down -

Every investment in ware has been eliminated since - with 10K in gear - I've finally figured out the deal.

They build the best chip set - but dumb it down 3-4 levels so it's possible to build the next device up a level.

Pretty Clever I must say. 10.6.8 is as far as this guy goes. It's Rock Solid for the most point.

I have had success by doing the follow:

1. Turning off mail>fetch data>push (makes a big difference to browser speed)

2. Deleting you iCloud Account from you iPad.

3. Using Dolphin web browser (not Safari)

4. Installing cMemory app - it's a free utility that clears memory when things start crashing.

5. I've read that removing rarely used apps can also help, as even unused apps reduces available short term memory.
