@ gnaismith71 - yeah this is what fixed it for me too. Doing a ton of things, but most specifically, taking the channel off of auto and setting it to something specific or setting it so it doesn't change. (I only have 1 router within a half a mile radius, or did). It could have been the hard restart too (pulling power, waiting 10 seconds, putting power back in). Who knows........

I bought a Netgear N600 WNDR3700v2 and hooked it up (having ordered it before I fixed the problem with my Verizon Fios router) 2 nights ago and forced my phone to use that router (hooked into the Fios Router via ethernet) and I haven't had any problems with that router for the last 2 days. I find it funny that I get faster wireless with that than the Verizon Fios router. Not surprising I guess. lol.

gnaismith71 is right - just keep trying stuff (for those with no internet problem).

Thank you, and do you actually surf for 5-10 minutes in one sitting and still no issues? Maybe apples/oranges, as (a) my wifi always shows connected and (b) works fine for anywhere from 3-5 minutes but inevitably before the 10-15 minute mark, I'll hit a timeout. You'll only know if you're having this issue by surfing for a decent time, i.e. wasn't apparent to me until I started using FaceTime daily.

I've tried this just wait 'n see just the other day with no results but may try it again. I also tried the manual channel setting to no avail. Maybe the Extreme doesn't respond as well as the Netgear routers for the manual channel fix.

Richard Caughlan wrote:

It was 48 hours. Just turn off Wifi and back on to reconnect, or of course Airplane mode does the same thing. I wish I could tell you I found some key to this but it just ironed itself out. This morning again, for the fifth straight day, I was still connected.

Exactly the same issue here. I got the 4S last week and it wouldn't work to the wifi router at my office nor would it work to the router at home. The menu bar however, shows as connected wifi even though it doesn't function. So at home I booted both my old 3GS and 4S in the room with the wifi router and the 3GS picked up the network and DHCP derived IP address and settings fine but the 4S simply refused to use the DHCP scope and sat there with the spinning wheel even though the menu bar again showed connected. Looking at the network connection detail I saw that the Iphone had given itself an IP address starting 169.x.x.x which is a kind of last resort address and can't route out over my wifi LAN. I then gave the iPhnoe 4S a static IP address from the range I keep spare for that and ... sure enough it works fine and can use the wifi with no problems. All works after another reboot.

Hopefully this will be enough to cure it, will try to add another report after the weekend to see how we get on.

Regards

Dave

by saying you fixed a problem is a joke! No one should have to go through these steps to hold onto a wifi signal! By playing around and not advising Apple of the real issue means they will never fix it. Hopefully these wifi problems come back for you and you continue to screw around with the settings! Voice your concerns with Apple and get them to look into the real issue at hand!

Can everyone who says it is working for them surf continuously for 10-15 minutes? I've tried static, etc but I still fail around the 10 minute mark. Do something like a FaceTime call, as streaming YouTube, etc isn't the best since you could be playing off buffer while your wifi has already fallen in the background.

During these timeouts, I never lose the wifi icon. It is only when I go to surf that I get nowhere.

My speeds were slower than sprints 3G! After the fix I mentioned In earlier posts I have full wifi speed (for a couple of weeks now), no drops, and can connect to public and private networks. I don't use static IPs or DNS(s)

I think the biggest thing is to make sure your home router is up to date and the power it down for a couple of minutes. Then while the router is powered down reset your network settings. When your phone comes back online again reboot your phone by holding the power and home key simultaneously until the apple logo appears. This helps to insure old settings data is gone. Power router and connect to wifi as usual. And don't mess with it anymore give it a day and the speed should come back.

Having the same issue with both my iPhone 4S and my iPhone 4, but not on my iPad2 and MacBook Air 13,3". All devices running iOS 5.0.1. and Air running latest OSX.

I have no trouble that i've seen at home with an older Airport Express, at work i have a 4th Gen Airport Extreme with firmware 7.5 and that one works and another Airport Extreme 5th Gen with firmware 7.6 (the latest) and that is not working with the iPhones but iPad and MBA is working on that Airport.

So in my terms this is still an issue mostly with iOS 5.0.1. on my iPhones and probably the iPhone antennas/Wifi software. Actually just tried an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1 and THAT does not even work on the Airport Extreme 5th Gen with firmware 7.6. Hmmm I am getting more and more clueless.

Still no success here on the 4S on 5.0.1 – have tried everything posted previously so posting logs hoping it helps solve the problem. For those reading for the first time, I have a 4S that had no timeout issues under 5.0, but now timeouts every ~10 minutes under 5.0.1. I had 6 other iOS devices running a variety of OS with absolutely no timeouts.

Found that both the 4S running 5.0 and 5.0.1 frequently disassociate/re-associate with the router (no other devices, not even the iPhone 4 do this, but for some reason the 5.0 OS doesn’t actually timeout). See towards the end of the log.

I took my network down to square 1 to run the test - reinstalled updated firmware on the Fios router, restored Extreme to factory setting, setup “TIMEOUT 4S” as a new phone and left everything off for 20 minutes before starting.

Setup is Fios RevE router (wifi off) connected to a 5th gen Airport Extreme (in bridge mode) with the following devices:

2 iPhone 4 (5.0)

2 iPhones 4S (1 each on 5.0and 5.0.1)

2 iPad 2 (1 each on 5.0and 5.0.1)

1 iPad 1 (4.3.3)

3 others – desktop, AppleTV,2 cameras

“TIMEOUT 4S” dropped its connection around 10.42, 10.53 and 11.23. Around 11.25, I put all devices except the 24S into Airplane Mode so you could see the traffic from only the 4S phones.

Have fun.

I followed this from Apple support:

Apple Support Recommends: iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections If you ve verified that your settings are correct and the issue persists, try the following: Tap Forget this Network to reset settings for this Wi-Fi network, including the password. Then try connecting to the network again.

And it worked. 🙂

Nov 24, 2011 7:51 AM in response to shaheeriqbal

I had the same issue with the iPhone 4s - during the initial restore from back-up using iCloud it would lose the Internet connection after 2 hours, 3 hours, and then 45 minutes, with me having to restart the whole process over each time, so after almost 6 hours of trying, I took it to the apple store and for the first time in my long history with apple I was disappointed with their 'genius' bar. They said that it was probably because I had too many devices running on my wifi or I was picking up interference from other routers close by. I told him that I've never had issues before and he persisted with his analysis, so I returned the phone and three days later bought another iPhone 4s and I had zero issues with it holding on to the wifi signal - it restored from back-up using iCloud for over 4 hours and never dropped the signal, all using that same router that supposedly had too many devices or was being interfered with. So, to me it seems like there was an issue with that iPhone and not necessarily with my router. Maybe Apple needs to receive more iPhone 4s returns in order to realize that there's an issue worth addressing?

Please note though that if you decide to follow this same course of action that 1) there's the chance that it won't have the same results as it did for me if you end up with another 'bad' iPhone, 2) you will need to go to get your old phone - in my case the 3GS - reactivated at the AT&T& store (if you have AT&T, not sure about others) and 3) you will need a new sim card to do so, which the AT&T store wanted to charge me $25 for! But the apple store gave to me at no charge, so be sure to ask for one before heading over to the AT&T store to get your old phone up and running again. Of course, you could also ask to exchange your iPhone 4s on the spot, but that's assuming they have any in stock!

Well, good luck! And Apple if you are reading this, please consider looking into this since based on my experience the issue was not my router but a particular iPhone 4s. Thanks!
