I called ATT to see if it could possibly be the service area. after being lied to by "level 1" lady, i got to "level 2" guy who said that the towers in my area are plenty and full-on 3G, almost 4G capable.

they opened a case and are supposed to have an answer to me by Tuesday, tomorrow.

After much troubleshooting, etc., he is of the opinion that its the phone and i will likely need to return it to Apple store where i bought it. he arrived at this conclusion after going through his entire line of questions, etc. and since a family member in my house has a regular 4 and isn't experiencing any of the problems and ANOTHER family member in the same house has a 4S (purchased the day after mine) and is experiencing the same problems i am--dropped calls and horrible reception.

maybe it is the phone. ugh.

i will update on tuesday when att gets back to me with a solution or response.

I have correlated my dropped calls (and lost data connection) to GPS activity. If I'm on a call and I fire up an app that uses GPS (Map, Facebook, Camera, Track Logger, etc), the call will be dropped within one minute. The cellular network connection is lost (Searching...). No data, no calling. Then after a varying amount of time (10sec to 45sec), the phone reconnects to the cellular network, and it's then possible to reinitiate a call or get data.

If I am connected to a wifi network, I continue to be able to get data from that connection. Turning wifi off doesn't change the behavior - still drops calls.

I have tried this while in different parts of town.

I'd be interested in hearing if others see this same behavior - I searched for it, but haven't had any hits.

Just to amplify, if I am not using GPS, my AT&T connection on iPhone 4S is very good - no dropped calls. If I turn on something that uses GPS, that's when problems start.

I am suspiscious that the cellular radio is getting reset periodically by having GPS turned on, causing to to have to resync. I can't tell whether it's a software problem or a hardware issue.

As a general rule, my iPhone 4S has been very solid - staying connected very well.

Im having a lot of software problems from glitching to things still working even though I have turned them off.......Like notifacations !! Siris doesnt work the greatest I have to ask the same question sometimes like 4 or 5 times before it gets it but I understand this is a Beta version. I dont like some of the upgrades like not having a switch to turn your notifications on and off now you have to manuel move them. Not haveing the tap to pull up your zoom function on the camera. Have to pinch to zoom makes the task harder, This phone also seems to get a lot hotter when I use it compared to my 3s and I notice the battery life is odd for if I dont use it the battery level hardly drops but as soon as I use an app or something the battery drops extremely fast and if you have it set up with Push notification and locations it doesnt even last half of a day with normal use...........So far my 3s was a far better phone in the sense of its durability !!

4s problems!!
