How can I upload files to iCloud?
MacBook Pro
Great posts here and you have answered my question. I no longer have access to iDisk from my newer Lion devices. Fortunately, I still have an old Mac running Snow Leopard. I can read between the lines that Apple wants users to buy and use their productivity software iWork. But this is impractical as most people use MS Office and need access to the files created. I always used iDisk for all my documents and now it seems I can't? I hope Apple can blend the two. I don't mind using iCloud but they have to allow document sharing/uploading of any file type, not just iWork files. I will keep looking for an intelligent answer from these guys. In the mean time, I will continue to use iDisk for as long as I can and will NOT move my productivity to iCloud.
Just an FYI, another annoying lacking feature of iCloud is it no longer syncs bookmarks or keychains! Seems like Apple is taking a giant leap backward??

I want to publish a file on iCloud (or any server which Apple used with iDisk) so it can be viewed by everbody who gets the link (it was called "publish" in iDisk, where a URL was created for that file).
This facility is not available in iCloud. At the simplest you can upload the file to any website hosting service (you may have some space from your ISP); if it's the type of file a browser would display you can zip it to force a downlload.
There are a number of services which provide this sort of facility: this page looks at some options:
LaurelW: iDisk will desapear on June 2012, and iCloud works with iWork. It seems that Apple wants to change all your work to iWork.
I bougth iWork for iPhone and iPad, but the sync for files do not work automatically you must do it manually (first bad issue). Other problem is that MS Office file are not totally compatible with iWork and you lose some parts for every file (second dab issue).
iCloud and iDisk doesn't the same. They have diferent operation way; In iDisk you can up load all the files and types and the sync is automatic; and iCloud only support iWork files,is not totally compatible with MS Office files and you must do the sync to your computer manually.
If you want some like iDisk, you need to change all your files to DropBox before June 2012.
I hope Apple change your mind and continue with iDisk or integrate iDisk in iCloud; but I don't think Apple thinks the same way.
I explained well?
Oh dear. Apple are seriously losing the plot.
I too am shocked that I will lose iDisk. It was really useful to send files to others. However, I know work amongst lots of Windows users & have found the following very useful.
There is a great alternative to iDisk & Dropbox. It's free, gives you a massive 25Gb, easy to use, has an iPhone app, totally cross platform and comes from, ahem.....Microsoft.
It's called Skydrive. Works brilliantly, pretty fast, easy to get others on both Mac & Windows to share/downlad files. I've been using it for the last three months or so & now I don't use iDisk.

Yes, I did say 25Gb...free.
With this, working in an office where I am now a minority & the new Windows 8, I may just start thinking of moving away from Apple after 25 years. Shame.
You CAN upload files to iCloud. Log in to your iCloud account at www.icloud.com. Click the iWork button from the 4 main options, and then click the gear symbol on the top right. There you will find an option to upload a document.
You CAN upload both iWork AND Microsoft Office files as well. I know this because I did it last night with a Microsoft Word document.
I am honestly really impressed with iCloud. Way to go Apple!
iCloud *****- Sure, I can PAY for iWorks that i already bought for my Powerbook, and pay my yearly subscription to Apple for iCloud, but you cannot save docs from apps except iworks directly into iCloud without having to upload them separately. As an example, with Dropbox, it shows up in any app that has a file/save option and you save to it like a network share. That's where the old iDisk was awesome! You can't do that with iCloud. Apple has purposly made it a proprietary cloud for iWork users. Dropbox is FREE for the first 5GB you use, and it works on every device I have- an iPhone, iPad, Powermac, PC, and Ubuntu Linux. Even Microsoft gives you SKYDRIVE for free, with 25GB storage although I don't use that one myself.
I love Apple's technology and product line, they just have a bad habit of locking out every other app provider from their cloud technology because they want you to use iWorks. I can't blame them, just stating the obvious. iCloud is not a true cloud app for the masses.
You can drag a word document into icloud.com
Are you talking about opening it in Pages? What people were looking for was a cloud repository to store documents, which iCloud does not have. A simple cloud-based folder would be very nice to have...
No its not a dropbox for just anything anymore like idisk. But it does accept MS office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. I am 100% positive because I just did it! 🙂
Read carefully...
Documents in the Cloud. And on your Mac or PC.
iCloud makes it easy to move Pages, Keynote, and Numbers documents between your computer and your iOS devices. Just sign in to icloud.com/iwork in any modern web browser, and all your iWork for iOS documents will be there — complete with your most recent edits. Click a document to download it in iWork ’09, Microsoft Office, or PDF format. You can also drag and drop any iWork ’09 or Microsoft Office document from your computer into one of the iWork apps on icloud.com, and it automatically appears on all your iOS devices, ready for you to review, edit, or present.
-----------------
you see?
Documents in the cloud accepts MS office files (word, excel, powerpoint) as well as iwork (pages, numbers, keynote)
Just try dragging a .docx to the pages section of documents in the cloud it WILL upload.
OK so I've opened iCloud in Safari, clicked on iWork and a big ICLOUD FOR PAGES screen comes up. There is no gear symbol in the top right corner, only a link telling me to get Pages for IOS. I click the link which opens iTunes to a screen where I can buy Pages for $10.49.
Do I actually need to buy pages just so I can upload documents to iCloud?? I don't really want pages (I don't even know what it does), I just want to be able to upload files to iCloud

Yes: you need both Pages for Mac and the separate Pages for iOS. Pages is a word processing and layout program.
iCloud allows you to upload Pages documents to iCloud for editing on an iOS device. It does not provide general file storage - for that you need a third-party solution. This page examines some option:
I had the same problem so I called Apple. In order to save files in iwork (yes, they must be iwork files) you must FIRST create a file in Pages, Numbers, or Keynote on ANOTHER device, like your ipad or iphone. After that, you can upload files (iwork files) to your iCloud storage. It was also mentioned that files attached to emails sent to your ipad or iphone can be placed in icloud (I assume this means pdfs and other file types). But you can NOT upload pdf's, html, or other files from your Mac to iCloud. Hence most of the functiionality of MobileMe has been lost.
I have the same problem. What do we do if we find this an issue?
I have tried this tip but the is no "Mobile Documents" folder on my system either. I am also wondering if I can simply create one and then follow the rest of the steps?
Cheers!

There are plenty of third-party solutions out there. This page examines some of them:
